Fans Push to Rename Birmingham Airport After Ozzy Osbourne Following His Death

Following the death of legendary Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne on July 22nd at the age of 76, fans have launched a petition calling for Birmingham International Airport to be renamed in his honor. The move is being championed by local residents, global fans, and musicians alike, paying tribute to one of the most iconic figures in rock history—and one of Birmingham’s most famous sons.

The petition, which gained thousands of signatures within hours of going live, proposes renaming the airport to Ozzy Osbourne International Airport, arguing that Ozzy’s influence on global culture and his lifelong connection to the city make him a worthy figurehead for its international gateway.

“Ozzy put Birmingham on the map,” the petition states. “From Aston to arenas across the world, he never forgot where he came from. Renaming the airport would be a fitting and permanent tribute to a man who changed music forever.”

Born John Michael Osbourne in Aston, Birmingham, Ozzy rose to fame in the 1970s as the voice of Black Sabbath, a band widely credited with inventing heavy metal. Their groundbreaking sound, forged in the gritty industrial backdrop of Birmingham, inspired generations of musicians and fans. Ozzy’s solo career further cemented his legacy, making him one of the most influential—and recognizable—figures in rock.

Ozzy’s death came just weeks after a surprise farewell performance in Birmingham, his final bow in the city where it all began. Fans around the world have since flooded social media with tributes, stories, and memories, celebrating the life of a man whose music resonated far beyond the genre he helped create.

Calls to rename the airport aren’t new. A similar proposal surfaced in 2014 but was ultimately shelved. This time, however, there’s a growing sense of urgency and public support following Ozzy’s passing.

City council members have yet to officially comment on the petition, but the idea has reignited discussion around honoring Birmingham’s cultural contributions—especially in music.

Rock journalist Kerrie Sharp commented,

“Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t just a rockstar—he was a Birmingham icon. Every time someone landed at Ozzy Osbourne International Airport, it would remind them of the city’s place in music history.”

As the petition continues to gain traction, fans hope their voices will be heard. To them, renaming the airport isn’t just about Ozzy—it’s about Birmingham celebrating one of its greatest legends, permanently.

Whether or not the change is approved, one thing is clear: the spirit of Ozzy Osbourne will forever fly high over the city that gave him to the world.
