Millie Bobby Brown is trading psychic powers for a sword and shield in her next major role. The Stranger Things star has officially signed on to lead the upcoming Viking epic Shieldmaiden, a historical drama that will see her step into the role of a fierce Norse warrior.
The film centers on the legendary figure Freydis Eiríksdóttir, a real-life Viking explorer believed to have sailed to North America around the year 1000 AD. Often overshadowed by the exploits of male Vikings like Leif Erikson, Freydis’s story has been gaining recognition in recent years, and Shieldmaiden aims to bring her tale to the forefront.
Brown, best known for her breakout performance as Eleven in Netflix’s Stranger Things and her recent turn in Enola Holmes, is eager to take on the physically demanding and emotionally rich role.
“I’ve always been drawn to strong female characters, especially those who break the mold,” Brown said in a statement. “Freydis was a warrior, an explorer, and a survivor. Her story deserves to be told.”
Directed by acclaimed Swedish filmmaker Jane Andersson, Shieldmaiden promises a gritty, grounded portrayal of Viking life, with a strong emphasis on authenticity. Andersson, known for her work on The Northern Wind, said the film will blend historical realism with an intimate character study.
“We’re not just making an action movie,” Andersson noted. “We’re telling the story of a woman who defied her time, her enemies, and even her own people to carve out a place in history.”
Production is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with principal photography taking place in Iceland and Norway. The natural beauty of the Nordic landscape is expected to play a major role in the film’s atmosphere and storytelling.
Shieldmaiden will feature a multinational cast, with several well-known Scandinavian actors in talks to join the project. The film is being produced by Nordic Light Films in collaboration with a major U.S. studio, with a planned theatrical release set for late 2026.
