Netflix has announced a new original documentary series focused on one of the most enigmatic, controversial, and influential figures in modern British music — Morrissey. Titled The Last English Poet, the multi-part series is scheduled to debut globally in late 2025.
Best known as the frontman of The Smiths and later as a solo artist, Steven Patrick Morrissey remains a towering and divisive presence in the cultural landscape. Netflix describes the series as “a cinematic exploration of the poet, provocateur, and outsider who helped shape the sound and soul of a generation.”
The documentary is being produced by award-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna, Diego Maradona), and promises an unflinching, archival-rich, and emotionally layered portrayal of the artist’s turbulent journey — from the grey streets of Manchester to international stardom, and eventually into the cultural shadows of recent years.
The Last English Poet will feature never-before-seen footage, rare interviews, handwritten lyrics, and live performances from Morrissey’s decades-spanning career. It also includes commentary from collaborators, critics, and former bandmates — including Johnny Marr, with whom Morrissey formed one of the most iconic songwriting duos of the 1980s.
Netflix sources say the documentary will tackle every facet of Morrissey’s life and career — from the meteoric rise of The Smiths to his literary obsessions, solo success, political controversies, outspoken views on British identity, and his complicated relationship with fame and the media.
For fans and critics alike, Morrissey remains a paradox: a voice of vulnerable defiance and romantic discontent, yet also a provocateur often at odds with the world around him. Tracks like There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, Suedehead, and Everyday Is Like Sunday have become touchstones of melancholic beauty and biting wit.
In a brief statement shared by Netflix, Morrissey said:
“I never wanted to be understood. Only heard. Maybe now they’ll finally do both.”
The documentary will not shy away from the more controversial aspects of Morrissey’s public life — including his statements on immigration, nationalism, veganism, and his fraught relationships with former bandmates and record labels. Instead, it aims to offer a complete picture of the man behind the myth.
As Netflix continues its streak of high-profile music documentaries, The Last English Poet is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated and discussed cultural events of the year.
Love him or loathe him, Morrissey is impossible to ignore. And soon, the whole world will be watching.
