The life and legacy of Greg Allman are set to shine on screen as his family has reached an agreement with Netflix to produce a brand-new documentary series. Titled Ramblin’ Man: The Greg Allman Story, the project will explore the highs, lows, and timeless influence of one of Southern rock’s most iconic voices.
Greg Allman, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 69, was not only the co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band but also the heart and soul of a genre that blended blues, country, jazz, and soul into a uniquely American sound. His smoky voice and soulful keyboard work helped define classic tracks such as Melissa, Whipping Post, and of course, Ramblin’ Man, a song that remains synonymous with his name.
The Netflix docuseries will pull back the curtain on Allman’s extraordinary life, combining rare archival footage, personal family stories, and exclusive interviews with bandmates and collaborators. It will also shed light on his deeply personal struggles — from his battles with addiction to the heartbreak of losing his brother, Duane Allman, at the height of the band’s rise.
For the Allman family, this project is more than just a film; it’s a way of preserving Greg’s story for future generations. In a joint statement, they shared:
“Greg was a father, a brother, and an artist who lived unapologetically. With Netflix, we’re ensuring that his spirit and music live on, inspiring people to face their own struggles with the same honesty he carried in his songs.”
Alongside the tributes from family, the series will feature appearances from fellow musicians, friends, and fans, offering a well-rounded portrait of a man who was equal parts flawed and brilliant.
With Ramblin’ Man: The Greg Allman Story, Netflix hopes to deliver a documentary that is as moving as Allman’s music — capturing not only the sound of Southern rock but also the resilience of a man whose artistry continues to echo across generations.
