Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a powerful new documentary series chronicling the tumultuous rise and tragic fall of legendary rock band Badfinger. Titled “No Matter What: The Badfinger Story,” the series is slated to premiere in early 2026 and promises to shine a long-overdue spotlight on one of the most talented—and ill-fated—bands in rock history.
Often remembered for their Beatles-esque melodies and the enduring hit “Without You,” Badfinger was once poised to be the next big thing. Signed to The Beatles’ Apple Records in the late 1960s, the British rock band quickly made waves with chart-topping singles like “Come and Get It,” “Day After Day,” and “Baby Blue.” But behind the radio-friendly tunes was a storm of mismanagement, financial ruin, and personal tragedy that would ultimately define the band’s legacy as one of rock’s most heartbreaking cautionary tales.
Netflix’s four-part docuseries will delve deep into the band’s journey, from their early days as The Iveys to their rebranding under Apple Records, and their close ties to The Beatles—particularly Paul McCartney and George Harrison. The series will feature rare archival footage, never-before-heard demo recordings, and exclusive interviews with surviving band members, family, and contemporaries from the 1970s rock scene.
In a statement, the show’s executive producer described the series as “a story of brilliant music overshadowed by devastating misfortune—an essential chapter in the history of rock that deserves to be told in full.”
The series will also tackle the darker chapters of the band’s history, including the controversial involvement of manager Stan Polley, who is widely blamed for the financial manipulation and emotional toll that contributed to the suicides of founding members Pete Ham and Tom Evans. These events rocked the music world and left an indelible mark on the legacy of a band that, by all rights, should have been remembered alongside their biggest contemporaries.
Badfinger’s music, however, has lived on. Their songs have been featured in numerous films and television shows—including the Breaking Bad finale, which reignited interest in “Baby Blue”—and their influence continues to be felt by artists across genres.
“No Matter What: The Badfinger Story” is part of Netflix’s ongoing push into music documentaries, joining the ranks of acclaimed series on artists like Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Robbie Williams. It promises not only to celebrate the band’s artistry, but to give voice to a legacy marked by both brilliance and betrayal.
For fans of classic rock and untold stories, this is a must-watch event.
