Cycling star Wout van Aert is used to making headlines for his blistering speed and endurance on the road—but recently, it was his unexpected appearance on The Masked Singer that had the internet buzzing. The Belgian rider left fans and viewers stunned (and amused) when he was revealed to be the voice behind a flamboyant squirrel costume, complete with a striking latex suit that he clearly wasn’t expecting.
In a candid post-reveal interview, Van Aert shared his first reaction upon seeing the suit he’d have to wear for the show.
“I was told that I would be a squirrel,” he laughed. “But when I saw the suit, I thought for a moment: what the fck*! I didn’t expect a latex suit like that!”
His appearance on the show was kept under tight wraps, in line with the strict confidentiality rules of The Masked Singer, where celebrity identities remain secret until their unmasking. According to Van Aert, only his wife knew about his involvement.
“Discretion was really important. I couldn’t tell anyone—not my teammates, not my family. Only my wife knew what I was up to,” he explained.
While the cyclist is typically seen tearing through time trials and powering up mountain climbs, his brief foray into showbiz offered fans a completely different side of him—one that was more playful, theatrical, and far from his usual ultra-focused demeanor.
Social media exploded following his reveal, with fans praising his willingness to step out of his comfort zone. Clips of Van Aert dancing and singing in his latex squirrel suit quickly went viral, making him a trending topic not just in sports circles but across entertainment media.
Van Aert’s surprise appearance comes at a time when athletes are increasingly venturing into mainstream pop culture, bridging the gap between sports and entertainment. But few expected one of the world’s top cyclists to be belting out tunes in full rodent regalia.
Despite the initial shock of the costume, Van Aert embraced the experience and seemed to have genuinely enjoyed the challenge.
“It was fun to do something so completely different,” he said. “People only ever see me on a bike, pushing limits. This was a chance to laugh at myself—and maybe give people a laugh too.”
From crushing time trials to owning the stage in latex, Wout van Aert continues to prove there’s nothing he can’t do—even if it means singing in a squirrel suit.
