In a deeply emotional and nostalgic moment, legendary musician Phil Collins was visibly moved as he came face-to-face with his original drum kit—the very instrument that helped shape the sound of Genesis and define his early solo career. The intimate reunion took place during a private viewing at a London music memorabilia exhibit, where Collins was invited to revisit the iconic Ludwig drum set he once called his own.
Now 73, Collins has largely retired from performing due to ongoing health issues, including nerve damage and mobility challenges that have made drumming impossible in recent years. But for a brief, powerful moment, the sight of his classic black Ludwig kit transported him back to a time when he stood behind it on the biggest stages in the world.

The drum set, preserved and restored by music historians, is believed to have been used during the late 1970s and early 1980s—an era that saw Collins transition from drummer to frontman in Genesis, and later launch his highly successful solo career. Most notably, it’s the kit associated with the recording of Face Value (1981), which includes the haunting, career-defining hit “In the Air Tonight.”
The unmistakable gated reverb sound from that song’s iconic drum break—a moment that has since become one of the most recognizable in music history—was captured using this very set. Its worn shells and aged cymbals now carry the weight of countless performances, recordings, and memories.
