Andy Bell and His Partner Fire Back at Haters With Fierce Message: “We’re Not Asking for Permission to Exist”

Legendary Erasure frontman Andy Bell has never lived quietly — and he has no plans to start now. In a bold, heartfelt message shared across social media this week, Bell and his husband fired back at critics with a powerful reminder: “We’re not asking for permission to exist.”

The message comes in response to a wave of online hate that followed the couple’s recent appearance at London Pride. A candid photo of the two — hand-in-hand, smiling beneath a rainbow flag — went viral for all the right reasons. But amid the celebration came an ugly backlash from trolls who questioned their visibility, their love, and even Bell’s legacy.

For Bell, a fierce LGBTQ+ icon since the 1980s, this was sadly familiar terrain — and one he’s long been ready for.

“There’s always been noise,” Bell wrote. “When I came out in 1980, people said: ‘You’ll lose your fans, your legacy, your power.’ And guess what?”
He continued, pausing for emphasis: “I’m still here. Still loud. Still pop. Still gay. And now? I’ve got the love of my life beside me — and that’s louder than any hate.”

The message is a powerful stand not just for himself, but for every queer person who has ever been told to tone themselves down, stay quiet, or disappear. Bell’s partner, who remains out of the spotlight by choice, added in the post:

“We’re not ashamed. We’re not hiding. We don’t need your permission to be in love. And we never have.”

Fans and fellow artists immediately rallied behind the couple. Messages of support poured in from across the world — including from LGBTQ+ icons like Boy George, Róisín Murphy, and Olly Alexander, all praising Bell’s enduring courage and grace.

For a man who gave us anthems like “A Little Respect” and “Chains of Love”, Bell’s real anthem may now be his life itself — lived openly, loudly, and unapologetically.

“Love is political,” he concluded. “Joy is resistance. If you’re uncomfortable seeing two people in love, that’s your burden to carry — not ours.”

Decades into his career, Andy Bell remains what he’s always been: a voice for truth, a beacon of pride, and a reminder that no matter how loud the hate gets, love will always be louder.
