Celtic currently ‘not pursuing’ Owen Beck but could sign left-back

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing young left-back Owen Beck, and it’s a position that Brendan Rodgers could look to strengthen.

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool left-back Owen Beck who was recently recalled from his loan spell with Dundee, and journalist Dean Jones has discussed the possibility of Brendan Rodgers’ side securing his signature, in an interview with GIVEMESPORT.

With the January transfer window opening a few days ago, Rodgers and his recruitment team will be in the market for reinforcements as they look to win the Scottish Premiership title once again.

After a tricky run of games throughout December, Celtic have started to turn things around, but they could be hoping for more additions to take their side to the next level.

With Beck returning to Liverpool, Celtic could make a play to bring him to the Scottish club. The 21-year-old has been in impressive form for Dundee this season, but the Merseyside outfit might want him playing in a better side in Scotland.

Celtic linked with a move for Beck

During the summer transfer window, Beck signed on loan with Dundee until the end of the season to gain first-team experience. However, Dundee announced earlier this week that Liverpool have opted to recall Beck from his loan spell, casting doubt over what the next step is for the young left-back.

A recent report from DaveOCKOP has suggested that Celtic and Rangers are both interested in taking Beck on loan for the remainder of the campaign. With Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas currently out injured, Jurgen Klopp might have chosen to bring Beck back to Anfield to provide cover at left-back, rather than to find him a new temporary deal away from the club.

Dundee boss Tony Docherty revealed back in December that the two clubs were in discussions regarding the future of Beck, possibly hinting that the Merseyside outfit have been considering finding him a new club to aid his development…

“We are in the middle of discussions. There is no confirmation of that just now but we are in discussions.”

The Evening Standard reported earlier in the campaign that Celtic were looking to sign Portuguese left-sided player Tiago Araujo. The Estoril star has featured at left-back or left midfield throughout this season, hinting that Rodgers is certainly looking to bring in reinforcements in this area of the pitch at some point this month.

Former Celtic striker Kenny Miller recently tipped the Scottish outfit to make a move for Beck after his return to Liverpool this month.

Jones has suggested that he doesn’t believe Celtic are currently pursuing a move for Beck, but he can completely understand why Miller would be recommending that his former club target the young defender. The journalist adds that the left-back position could be an area in which Rodgers hopes to reinforce before the deadline at the end of the month. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones said…

“Yeah, I saw his comments around that one and I did find it interesting. I can completely understand why he would be thinking that way. I don’t think it’s being pursued. From anything I’ve heard and checked out, I don’t think that this is active in any way. But of course, we know that Rodgers is looking to lift the levels of this squad right now. And that left back area might well be a spot that he is going to be looking to target.”

Rodgers wants a striker

Reports in Denmark have suggested that Celtic are are one of the sides who are considering a move for Mathias Kvistgaarden. Another option for the Scottish outfit is Szymon Wlodarczyk, with journalist Mark Hendry claiming that the Polish forward is of interest to Celtic. Rodgers is likely to be losing one of his key forwards in Kyogo Furuhashi due to the Asia Cup later this month, so a centre-forward could be a priority.

Journalist Jones previously told GIVEMESPORT that a move for Kvistgaarden could be more likely in the winter window due to his reasonable price, rather than Wlodarczyk. Either way, we may see Celtic splash the cash on a new number nine before the deadline.

According to Madden, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) would have reviewed the potential penalty, and even if it had initially been given on the field, the Attacking Phase Possession (APP) check would have revealed the offside, nullifying the penalty decision. This multi-step process, while complex, aims to maintain fairness and transparency in the game’s officiating.

The former referee’s clarification comes amidst a backdrop of a meltdown from the Rangers’ fanbase and calls from the club’s management and board for the VAR room’s audio to be made public.

The demands come across as petulant and childish, especially considering Madden’s own leanings towards Rangers, which lend credence to his impartial assessment of the situation.

Madden’s explanation aims to dispel myths of bias and assure all parties that the right decision was reached according to the laws of the game.

He wrote on his Instagram:

“Another Old Firm game has come with its fair share of controversy and the usual blend of misinformation and poor reporting.

In my view, we witnessed a clear punishable handball offence. Such incidents are notoriously difficult for referees to detect, and thus the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system is tasked with reviewing all decisions in the penalty area.

Had the penalty been awarded on the field, it would have been subsequently overturned once VAR reviewed the Attacking Phase Possession (APP).

Since no initial award was made, VAR would have examined the play; if VAR determined a penalty was warranted, they would have also reviewed the APP to ascertain any offside positions. To prevent any misunderstanding, an on-field review by the referee would be necessitated to make the final call. If the referee on review agreed with the penalty, they would then highlight the offside to reset play accordingly.

If, however, the referee concluded that no penalty occurred, the game would resume from the point of interruption. Admittedly, this process can seem laborious, but it exists to ensure clarity in the decision-making process.

In essence, VAR did not believe a penalty was due. The later release of an offside image served to justify the decision not to intervene. Ultimately, it seems the correct decision was made.

A point of clarification: if no offside had occurred in the APP and a penalty had been given, it would not constitute a cautionable offence. It certainly wouldn’t be grounds for a second yellow card for handball, contrary to what some might argue.

Philippe Clement has responded to rumours that Rangers are ready to splash out £2.5million on Vitesse Arnhem winger Million Manhoef.

As per a Scottish Sun report, the Ibrox club have tracked the highly-rated Dutch youth international for the past 12 months and new director of football recruitment Nils Koppen is thought to be an admirer of the player, who turns 22 next month.

Manhoef, who operates mainly on the right-hand side but if also effective on the opposite flank or as a full-back, has 18 months remaining on his current deal. It is believed Vitesse would be ‘willing to listen’ to offers in January with English Champions leaders Leicester City and Preston North End among other contenders eyeing his signature.

Speaking to local media, Gwangju manager Lee Jung-Hyo detailed the latest on the situation, stating: “Jung Ho-Yeon is currently in talks to advance to Europe from Gwangju, but still have a long way to go. If you go to Europe now, you are bound to end up in a clumsy situation. It is wise to prepare well like Cho Gue-sung (who signed for Midtjylland last summer) and choose the team and league well.”

Labelled a “prospect” by Asian football expert Dario Focardi, the South Korea Under-23 international has gone on to make 34 appearances in 2023, registering two goals and three assists (Jung statistics – Transfermarkt).

Celtic have made an approach to ask about a deal to bring one of their long-term targets to the Scottish Premiership, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

Hoops eyeing Kvistgaarden

Ahead of January, Brendan Rodgers will be assessing his options in the market to see if there are any players he could strengthen his squad with. One recently identified is Brondby forward Mathias Kvistgaarden if claims are to be believed.

The Bhoys are reportedly preparing an improved offer for the striker having seen their opening bid turned down over the summer, but should a deal for him fail to come to fruition for whatever reason, the hierarchy appear to have alternative centre-forward targets.

Sturm Graz’s Szymon Wlodarczyk only put pen to paper at his club during the previous window from Gornik Zabrze where he’s so far made 28 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Wlodarczyk statistics), but he was on the board’s radar long before his most recent move.

Back in January, Mark Hendry first claimed that Poland’s youth international was of interest to the green and white stripes, though a switch hasn’t yet taken place, hence why he moved elsewhere, and it still sounds like the 20-year-old won’t be making the trip to Glasgow anytime soon despite new efforts.

Celtic submit enquiry for Wlodarczyk

According to Football Scotland, Celtic have asked about signing Wlodarczyk again next month, but after learning his price tag in a response from Sturm Graz, have decided that they couldn’t afford to complete a deal in January.

“Football Scotland can also reveal Celtic reached out to Sturm Graz in an effort to revisit another former transfer target, Szymon Wlodarczyk, but were told his valuation has sky-rocketed to around £15m which would financially be out of their reach in January.”

Wlodarczyk is a “highly talented” striker

Since joining Sturm Graz, Wlodarczyk has racked up 11 contributions (nine goals and two assists) from 28 appearances, displaying how prolific he can be in the final third, and he’s able to pose a constant threat to the opposition’s defence in the attacking areas of the pitch.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Rodgers’ target is also able to provide a real physical presence up top with his height, with his ability to win aerial duels making him a real handful for any backline to deal with, alongside how dangerous he can be with the ball at his feet.

Described by football scout Jacek Kulig, Wlodarczyk is a “highly talented” player with an extremely bright future ahead of him, but with Celtic not set to splash the cash to get their long-term target in the coming weeks, it could prove to be a blow considering the positive impact that he may have been able to make.
