Celtic “must” sign midfield reinforcements in January says Neil Lennon

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon has voiced his opinion on the team’s current needs, particularly in the midfield, following their recent defeat to Hearts.

He has suggested a tactical shift for Callum McGregor, urging the club to sign a new defensive midfielder to allow the captain more freedom to play further up the field, after excelling in this role over the past couple of games.

Lennon, speaking on PLZ Soccer, said Celtic need a ‘number six’ with a physical presence to strengthen midfield. This addition would enable McGregor, who Lennon does not see as an ideal fit for the defensive midfield role, to move into a more advanced position where he can have a greater impact on the game.

“A number six and a number nine,” Lennon said, outlining his recommendations for the January transfer window.

“Let McGregor play further forward. The game on Wednesday, when Iwata started and Callum was playing the number eight role. They started off the game really well. They gave Callum that licence to dictate the game further up the pitch.

“Then Iwata had to come off and Callum had to drop into the number six position, just the momentum stopped. Feyenoord started creating chances.

“I don’t think he is a great number six. He is far better playing that 6/8 role. Going in and scoring goals. For me, a physical presence in midfield is a must.”

The upcoming January transfer window is seen as crucial for Celtic to address these concerns. The right signings could not only improve the team’s immediate performance but also appease the fans who are calling for significant action from the club’s hierarchy.

It’s certainly going to be an interesting few months.
