Erik ten Hag gave Kobbie Mainoo his first start in England’s top flight against a physically strong Everton team, but the teenager proved more than up to the task.

Starting with Scott McTominay, the midfielder performed excellent in the center of the park, with Gary Neville stating that the teenager appeared to be the Red Devils’ most experienced player on the pitch.

Mainoo was the deepest midfielder at times, and the composure and grace with which he picked up the ball from the back four was breathtaking.

Mainoo with Keane

Roy Keane is one Red Devils player who understands what it takes to play in the engine room. The Irishman was full of praise for the 18-year-old after United’s emphatic win against the Toffees on Sky Sports.

“Unbelievable, I don’t want to get too carried away, but I’m sure we will,” said Keane of Mainoo. “He appeared to be always on the ball and making decisions – when to go long and when to go short.” What an all-around performance, on and off the ball.

“He was fantastic. He had the appearance of a Manchester United player. Nice and courageous, lots of courage.”

It’s startling to believe that Mainoo is only 18 years old, since with his coolness and composure on the ball, you’d think he was a seasoned veteran of the game.

Mainoo’s opportunity

During pre-season, there was a lot of enthusiasm among the fans because the teenager was one of the club’s finest players and seemed to be fitting in beautifully.

Due to an unlucky injury suffered against Real Madrid, the teenager missed the start of the season, and it’s apparent that the midfielder might have played a significant role in the United team had he been fit.

The time has come for the teenager to demonstrate why United fans are so enthusiastic about the 18-year-old. With Ten Hag’s first-choice midfielders either injured or underperforming, Mainoo has an opportunity to establish himself in the Dutchman’s squad.
