Hatate a water carrier? Japan’s strange use of Celtic stars..

If it had just been the once, perhaps we could put it down to being lost in translation.

Wires can be crossed when taking quotes from foreign publications in the native tongue, after all, a fact many a player has used as a convenient get-out clause when their gripes about their club or manager to the local press have made their way back to where they routinely ply their trade.

So, the first time Reo Hatate was described by Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu as a ‘water carrier’, I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. But Hatate himself has now alluded to this being his ascribed role within the Japanese squad.

“I think it’s important to get my own results, but my ability to carry water is also being evaluated,” Hatate told Japanese football website Gekisaka.

Utilising Hatate, one of the most creative and arguably the most technically gifted midfielders in Scotland as a water carrier is a little like asking Michelangelo to paint your downstairs lavvy. Sure, he’ll do a decent job, but it seems like a waste of his talents.

That is if Moriyasu uses him at all. Hatate, along with Celtic teammate Daizen Maeda, was an unused substitute in the Samurai Blue’s opening Asian Cup win over Vietnam on Sunday. Japan take on Iraq this morning, and it remains to be seen if either man gets a runout.

It all adds fuel to the notion that Moriyasu is on a different page to Celtic when it comes to what their Japanese contingent can offer, both when Ange Postecoglou was in charge, and now, under Brendan Rodgers.

For Moriyasu, Hatate is a water carrier, while at Celtic, he is a lock picker. Maeda is a central striker for his country ahead of Kyogo Furuhashi, while at Celtic, he plays off the wing in deference to him. And Kyogo himself barely gets a sniff for Japan, while he is the focal point of Celtic’s attack.

While all three players undoubtedly love representing their country, and would much rather be called up than not, I’m not sure that the Celtic coaching team would necessarily feel the same way.

And while Rodgers was gutted for Kyogo on a personal level not to make their Asian Cup squad, he would have been just as confused and perturbed that Hatate was included after just 19 minutes of competitive football in the preceding two and a half months.

Particularly if his primary role is a squad filler. Or indeed, if he does get a chance to play, as a water carrier. Or even from the left wing, as he did in a friendly against Tunisia in October.

In mitigation, Moriyasu does have a wealth of talent available to choose from. But there must be a feeling within the Celtic camp that representing Japan – or not, as the case may be – is an unwelcome distraction for the trio. Hatate though, in typically humble style, is happy to accept his station.

“First of all, what can I do for the team?” he said.

“The best thing to do is to do my best for the team, and in addition to that, I want to get results such as goals.

“I think if you do it for the sake of others, they will follow you, so I hope I can do my best to help the team win.

“The team’s training has been very intense, and I feel like my condition is improving.”

That last nugget there is at least encouraging from a Celtic point of view. They would undoubtedly have preferred to monitor Hatate’s ongoing quest for full fitness and match sharpness at close quarters at Lennoxtown, but at least that work is going into his legs, and their sports science team will no doubt be receiving his data.

The view from Israel on Celtic, the Green Brigade and Abada

Unfortunately, improving his match sharpness is the one thing that could have been guaranteed had he stayed in Glasgow, and that is now out of the club’s hands. The Scottish Cup tie against Buckie Thistle this Sunday, for instance, would be a perfect opportunity to step up his game time.

Alas, we wait to see if Hatate, and indeed Maeda, will get their opportunity. All going well for Japan, they could conceivably be away until mid-February, and it is likely they will both be called upon at some stage should their nation go deep in the tournament.

For Hatate though, that might mean the odd cameo from the bench here and there over the next three weeks, and given he has only just returned to action, that is far from ideal.

Confirmed: Celtic Finalise Another Local Loan Exit

By M.Ross -January 18, 2024
MacKenzie Carse, our very own promising star from the Celtic B squad, has just packed his bags for a stint at Queen’s Park, a move that could prove instrumental in his personal development.

It’s a chance for the lad to dip his toes into the rough-and-tumble world of senior football. At just 19, Carse is stepping into a crucial phase of his career, one that could shape his future in hoops.

The chatter among the Celtic supporters is a mix of hope and a bit of weariness. They’re keen to see Carse spread his wings and soar. After all, watching one of our own rise through the ranks, from the youth academy to the first team, is something that brings a special kind of pride.

But there’s also this niggling worry about our youngsters, about making sure they’re getting the right kind of challenges to hone their skills. It’s no secret that the Scottish Lowland League, where the B team’s been cutting their teeth, isn’t exactly the premier battleground for forging top-notch talent. It’s decent, sure, but it’s not the kind of place where future legends are going to be made.

So, this loan to Queen’s Park could be just what the doctor ordered for Carse. The Scottish Championship is a step up, a place where he’ll come up against some tough and talented players.

The big picture here is clear. We’re all keenly aware of the need to keep our best young talents and give them as much quality game time as possible.

It’s about striking that balance – nurturing our youngsters, giving them the right opportunities, and making sure they’re ready to step up when the call comes. With Carse heading to Queen’s Park, it’s a step in the right direction, a move that signals our commitment to developing our future stars.

FOUR DEFEATS IN SEVEN: MANAGER CELTIC EYED TO REPLACE POSTECOGLOU HAS NOW BEEN SACKED

Thu 18 January 2024 14:00, UK
Celtic looked into appointing Pascal Jansen to replace Ange Postecoglou but he now finds himself out of work after being axed by AZ Alkmaar.

Celtic suffered the blow they were probably expecting over the summer as Ange Postecoglou left the club.

The Australian was almost mocked when he became Celtic boss in 2021, moving from Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan.

If people were laughing then, they weren’t laughing by the time Postecoglou had finished at Parkhead, winning two league titles.

Postecoglou moved on to Tottenham and whilst Celtic moved for Brendan Rodgers as his successor, one of their targets now finds himself out of work…

Pascal Jansen loses AZ Alkmaar job after Celtic interest
Reports over the summer indicated that Celtic were interested in landing AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen.

Rodgers ended up landing the job but Jansen certainly seemed like an appealing candidate.

The London-born coach secured a fourth-place finish in the Eredivisie last season and guided AZ into the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League, losing out to eventual winners West Ham United.

Jansen looked to be a really promising coach but things have gone wrong for him this season.

Jansen dropped just four points in the first 10 games of the season, enjoying a superb start to the campaign.

Form since then has been tricky though with AZ losing four in seven, taking seven points from a possible 21.

A torrid Europa Conference League campaign didn’t help either as AZ lost four in six and crashed out of the group stage.

AZ have now pulled the trigger, announcing on Wednesday that they have sacked Jansen and his time in charge is over.

Jansen leaves after 94 wins in 162 games, boasting an impressive 58% win rate.

We will surely see Jansen in another job soon enough; much of his AZ reign was very impressive and he will have attracted interest from elsewhere.

Maybe Celtic will keep tabs on him moving forward, but they will currently feel that going back to Rodgers was the right decision.

Celtic refuse £4m asking price, Ange returns for ex-Celtic target, plus Rangers, Hearts, Hibs latest – rumour mill

The latest January transfer news and speculation involving Scottish Premiership

Estroil’s Tiago Araujo (left) is a reported target for Celtic but the £4m asking price is proving a stumbling block.

Estroil’s Tiago Araujo (left) is a reported target for  Celtic but the £4m asking price is proving a stumbling block.

Motherwell blow
Arsenal have recalled striker Mika Biereth from his season-long spell at Motherwell with another loan move in the pipeline. Reports have claimed that Sheffield Wednesday want the Denmark Under-21 international. Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell said: “Mika has been recalled. It’s been a difficult one for us over the last 24 hours. It’s a major, major disappointment.

“This was a little bit unexpected. The conversation was that Mika would stay here until the end of the season just last week unless something big came on the table for Arsenal that they couldn’t turn down. They believe there’s an opportunity to send him to another club that takes him that step beyond where we are just now.”

Celtic refuse £4m asking price

Estoril’s Tiago Araujo is a reported target for Celtic – but the Scottish champions are not prepared to meet his valuation.

According to the Daily Record, the Portuguese club have priced the left-back out of a move to Parkhead by demanding a £4m fee that the Parkhead powers-that-be are not prepared to pay.

Unless Estoril significantly reduce their asking price, it seems unlikely the 22-year-old will be joining Celtic in the January transfer window.

Ange returns for ex-Celtic target

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is said to be targeting a centre-back he tried and failed to sign for Celtic. Ko Itakura was linked with a move from Manchester City to Celtic when Postecoglou first arrived at Parkhead but opted instead for a loan move to Schalke 04 before joining Borussia Mochengladbach for £4.3m.

The 26-year-old is now back on the radar of Postecoglou, who is reportedly looking to take him to Tottenham. According to Sky Germany, the move may not happen until the summer when his reported £13m release clause kicks in.

Three-way battle for Celtic defender
Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke now appears to be at the centre of a three-way transfer tussle amid reports of further interest from Serie A.

The Swedish centre-back is only six months into a five-year contract at Celtic following his summer arrival from IF Elfsborg, but will be allowed to leave on loan in January after falling out of the first-team picture.

Lecce and Genoa have already been linked with Lagerbielke during the window, now the Daily Record state that Hellas Verona have also entered the running.

Doig staying in Italy
Josh Doig looks set to remain in Italy following the collapse of his proposed move to Marseille.

The Scotland Under-21 international had agreed terms on move to the Ligue 1 giants and was preparing to travel to France when his current club, Hellas Verona, put the brakes on the deal following a rival offer from Sassuolo.

Marseille have since walked away from the deal and Verona are now in talks with their Serie A rivals over a more lucrative £5.1m transfer, plus add-ons.

Hibs are due a £1.5m windfall once the transfer of Doig goes through made up of a sell-on fee and payments still due from the original transfer to Verona 18 months ago.

Dundee near EPL signing
Dundee are reportedly closing in on the signing of Everton centre-back Ryan Astley. Sky Sports report that negotations are in the process of being finalised for the 22-year-old to complete a permanent transfer to Dens Park. Astley will move on a free, with Goodison Park club inserting a sell-on clause into deal.

Hearts target Dhanda
Yan Dhanda will only join Hearts this month if the Edinburgh club pay a transfer fee for the midfielder.

Ross County manager Derek Adam insists Dhanda will remain in Dingwall until the summer when his contract expires unless the club receives a good offer for the player, with Hearts more likely to wait until the summer to land the Englishman on a free. Adams confirmed: “In this window, we have had no offers for him. We want to keep him, and we will keep him in this transfer window unless someone pays money that we think is acceptable.”

Rangers left-back latest
Rangers boss Philippe Clement is in the market for a left-back but one player linked with a move to Ibrox, Benfica’s David Jurasek, is set to join Hoffenheim on loan, according to reports in Portugal. Clement has confirmed that he will not allow Ridvan Yilmaz, who is wanted by clubs in Turkey in Italy, to depart the club until he secures a replacement, particularly with Borna Barisic also entering the final six months of his contract.

However, it seems unlikely that Czech Republic international Jurasek will be the answer with the player seemingly destined for the Bundesliga. Rangers have also been linked with Twente Enschede’s Gijs Smal and Bristol City’s Cameron Pring, as well as Hellas Verona’s Scotland U21 star Josh Doig.

Hibs linked with winger
Hibs have been credited with an interest in Hertha Berlin winger Myziane Maolida. According Football Scotland, Hibs are hoping to lure the 24-year-old to Easter Road this month with a summer move also possible. Hana Rostock are also said to be interested in the Comoros international, who has yet to feature for the Bundesliga 2 club this season.

Maolida is under contract until 2025 but it is claimed that Hertha would be willing to compromise on a transfer fee for a player no longer considered part of their plans. His former clubs include Lyon and Nice, while has also spent time on loan at Reims.

Celtic could be ‘favourites’ to beat Rangers to Scott McKenna signing

Celtic are just one of the clubs interested in bringing Scott McKenna back to the Scottish Premiership in

The Murky Side of Ibrox Club’s Celtic Discontent Rears Its Ugly Head

In the aftermath of Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Celtic on December 30th, a match marred by controversy, not due to the loss itself but rather the fallout from a contentious handball incident, a narrative far too familiar began to unfold. The Ibrox outfit’s immediate response was to launch a vehement campaign against the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and referee Willie Collum.

The call for a penalty, waved off by Collum on VAR, became the eye of a storm, one which, upon closer examination, revealed no material impact on the game’s outcome. Yet, this detail was lost in the ensuing outcry from Rangers, marking the beginning of a deflective strategy that has become a discernible pattern, especially following defeats to their fiercest rivals.

The media quickly picked up the narrative set by Rangers, running with it, thereby amplifying the club’s discontent. The demands for audio, despite knowing it would be due to them anyway after the 22nd round of fixtures, and the subsequent meeting with the SFA, were steps in a dance of deflection and obfuscation.

The narrative took a darker turn when it was leaked that Rangers had requested Collum not officiate their games again, not coming from Rangers themselves but their lap dogs in fan media.

This insinuation being that Collum can not officiate a Rangers game fairly, this request/leak was enough for a torrent of bigotry and prejudice on social media and fan forums. Images and videos of Willie Collum performing a reading at a Catholic mass were circulated by Rangers fans, purportedly as ‘Exhibit A’ to argue he officiates Rangers games with bias.

A year earlier Collum denied what looked to be a stonewall penalty to Celtic in the reverse fixture at Ibrox. Observable reality doesn’t show a pattern of bias, it shows a referee not very well equipped to do his job; the distinction is important. Nearly every SPFL club has had issues with Collum over the years.

This episode is not isolated but indicative of a deeper, more insidious issue, one that Andrew Smith poignantly addressed in his article on Rangers’ ‘superiority syndrome’ and anti-Catholic bigotry. Smith shed light on the entrenched sense of entitlement and bigotry that has long been cultivated within certain segments of the Rangers fanbase.

The incident with Collum is a manifestation of this superiority complex and the refusal to engage in self-reflection or acknowledge the bigotry that permeates through the club’s culture.

The incident is a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of such rhetoric and behavior. Rangers’ actions, whether intentional or not, have given license to a faction of their support to express and act upon their deep-seated bigotry.

This is not simply about a football match or a disputed call; it’s about a club’s responsibility to its community and the broader society. The attempt to deflect from a fair and square defeat by fueling a narrative of victimhood and bias is not just poor sportsmanship; it’s dangerous.

Rangers, as a club with significant influence, has a duty to lead by example. It’s incumbent upon them to address the elements within their fan base that cling to outdated and harmful beliefs. The path forward requires a clear and unequivocal stance against all forms of bigotry and a commitment to fostering an environment of respect and fair play, both on and off the field.

As Andrew Smith rightly pointed out, the media, authorities, and society at large must also play their part. There can be no more turning a blind eye or deaf ear to the issues at hand. It’s time for a collective effort to challenge and change the narrative, to ensure that our game isn’t tainted by hatred and prejudice. The call is clear: It’s time for Rangers, and indeed all involved, to step up and be the change that is desperately needed.

This article will more than likely be dismissed as mere ramblings from a Celtic page by a non-practicing Catholic writer aiming to take potshots at rivals, but that’s far from the truth.

The call for transparency in Scottish football, including Rangers’ demands, is welcome. However, the line is drawn when officials are put in precarious situations where their faith influences debates over on-field decisions. It’s about fairness and integrity, not rivalry.

The more transparency we have, the less room for ambiguity going forward for all clubs, not just Celtic and Rangers. This ensures a level playing field where decisions are made clear and accountability is upheld, fostering a healthier, more respectful football environment for everyone involved.

Leeds United forward ‘attracting interest’ from Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt has reportedly been attracting interest from Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers.

The 21-year-old’s progress has stalled since his breakthrough 2021/22 campaign at Elland Road and he has made just six Championship appearances this season.

He has faced stern competition in the forward department and has also had injury issues. Like teammate Charlie Cresswell, he does not appear to be at the forefront of Daniel Farke’s mind.

According to Mail Online, both Celtic and Rangers have shown interest in the forward, but it remains to be seen whether Leeds will sanction any further departures this month.

Joe Gelhardt has struggled for minutes at Leeds United this season. Image: Bruce Rollinson

Gelhardt was sent out on loan to Sunderland in the last January transfer window and helped the Black Cats reach the Championship play-offs. However, an injury to Sunderland’s Ross Stewart meant Gelhardt was deployed in the number nine role, a position he has not always appeared comfortable in.

Leeds’ relegation to the Championship failed to open up a path into the picture for Gelhardt and a departure could potentially kickstart his career.

Gelhardt was recruited by Leeds back in 2020, having shown plenty of promise while cutting his teeth at Wigan Athletic. He starred for the Whites at under-23 level before being integrated into the senior set-up under Marcelo Bielsa.

However, Gelhardt has slipped down the pecking order and is not the only prospect signed in 2020 to have struggled for minutes. Both Cody Drameh and Sam Greenwood were allowed to depart on loan last summer, joining Birmingham City and Middlesbrough respectively.

Celtic Loan Bhoy Dumped Out of FA Cup

Celtic loanee Haksabanovic and his Stoke side faced a stern test against Premier League outfit Brighton in the FA Cup on Saturday, a challenge that ultimately saw them knocked out following a 4-2 defeat.

For the 24-year-old winger, the game was a chance to showcase his talents on a larger stage. Starting in the line-up, Haksabanovic was in the thick of the action for 58 minutes until he was pulled off with Stoke trailing 2-1.

Despite the loss, the outing was another opportunity for him to gain valuable match fitness and experience, adding to his 12 appearances this season. It’s worth noting, however, that his journey this term hasn’t been all smooth, with an earlier injury sidelining him and disrupting his rhythm.

Signed by Ange Postecoglou, Haksabanovic arrived at Celtic with a promising aura but never quite managed to cement his place in the team. Brendan Rodgers made the decision to send Sead out on loan, a move that spoke volumes about his immediate future with the Bhoys.

Now, half way through the season and next summer looming, his return to Celtic Park is on the horizon.

What lies ahead for Haksabanovic in the green and white?

His time away, marked by a mix of individual growth and collective disappointment, doesn’t paint the clearest picture. As things stand, Haksa’s Celtic career feels like it’s on its final leg. Rodgers has spoke about shaping the team in his image and Sead clearly isn’t in his plans.

Celtic transfer bulletin as Paulo Bernardo permanent deal ‘dangled’ and Tiago Araujo progress update

Bernardo has been one of Celtic’s key men recently but is he at Parkhead to stay?

Goal hero Paulo Bernardo

Paulo Bernardo has a permanent Celtic move dangling in front of him – and has been challenged to reach out and grab it.

The on-loan Benfica midfielder has grown into a prominent starting role under Brendan Rodgers after a peripheral start to life at Parkhead. Dubbed as the man to step into Jota’s shoes as the new superstar from Portugal in Glasgow’s east end, he started just two of the first 18 league games. But after forcing his way into the team against Livingston, he started the final four before the winter break, scoring twice and picking up a brace of assists against St Mirren for good measure.

He’ll be a key man in the second part of the season and there is already clamour from fans to see him signed up permanently with Celtic holding an option to purchase him as part of the loan agreement. And that’s something Paul Lambert would like to see them trigger…if he can keep his form up.

Lambert told The Celtic Way: “The carrot being dangled in front of Bernardo now is that the next five months will determine whether he wins a permanent contract at Celtic or not. If he does well and both parties agree then he will sign the deal. If he doesn’t then Brendan will need to decide on what he wants to do with him.

“In the last few games, Bernardo has started to get going a bit but he has to sustain those levels from now until May.

“Whether you are a young player at Celtic coming through the ranks, or just a young player or an experienced player, the one thing that this club teaches you is that you have to win. You have to win at every level. If you don’t have that feeling of winning, you crave it. It is like a drug. You always need it. It gives you a great grounding.

“If you do happen to move on from Celtic to pastures new then players quickly find out that there are not many clubs like it. The demands that are placed on Celtic players are incredible. That feeling of having to win games is ever-present at Celtic. The fan base demands that you win football matches. The lessons you learn at Celtic stand you in good stead whenever you do leave the club.

Michael Beale fires Rangers and Celtic potshot as Sunderland boss swipes at derbies that ‘don’t let the fans in’

Beale reckons derbies with both sets of fans are what ‘keeps football going’ as he aimed a veiled dig at Rangers and Celtic.

Michael Beale was on the losing end of a derby defeat to Newcastle

Michael Beale took a veiled dig at Rangers and Celtic over the ongoing away allocation deadlock – with a pop at derbies that ‘don’t let the fans in.’

Beale bounced back from his sacking at Ibrox to swiftly land the Sunderland job and it’s been a rocky start for him at the Stadium of Light.

He was in the dugout for Saturday’s heavily anticipated Tyne-Wear derby with Newcastle in the FA Cup, with the Magpies running out comfortable 3-0 winners.

The atmosphere was electric as 6,000 Geordies sat in the away section and made their voices head in the 49,000 sellout crowd. And it was something Beale was keen to celebrate despite his side’s disappointing defeat. Beale was in the dugout for six Old Firm derbies during his time in Glasgow but only two of them, at Hampden, had a significant number of both sets of fans in attendance.

That’s because of the ongoing feud between Rangers and Celtic with neither club currently allowing away supporters in at Ibrox or Parkhead.

And that wasn’t lost on Beale as he told beIN Sports after the game: “The noise in the stadium today was absolutely fantastic. Some derbies, we don’t allow the fans in, and I’ve had that both in Brazil and Scotland. So to have the derby with some opponents’ fans in and the fans working off each other, that’s what keeps football going.”

Video: Celtic loanee scores cracker for Dunfermline at Hampden

Celtic winger Ben Summers scored a cracking goal for Dunfermline last night. The 19-year-old joined the Fife side on a season-long loan to get first team football under James McPake and if he keeps scoring goals like this, he’ll get on Brendan’s radar.

Since moving to East End Park, Summers has made 11 appearances, scoring twice and assisting twice. The Championship is a better route for young players as opposed to the B Team in the Lowland League.

Born just as Celtic were stopping the Ten, Lubo98 follows Celtic home and away and helps run his local Celtic Supporters Club. He goes to all the games and is a Law Graduate. Has a particular fondness for Tom Rogic among the current Celts and both Lubo and Henrik form his earliest Celtic memories.

‘Fantastic’ Liverpool player has turned down the chance to join Celtic in January

Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic are interested in signing Owen Beck from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the January transfer window.

That is according to The Athletic, which has suggested Beck’s stance on a potential move to Celtic Park.

So, what has been reported about Celtic, Liverpool and Owen Beck? Let’s take a look.

Celtic linked with Liverpool left-back Owen Beck

Well, according to The Athletic, Celtic are among the clubs who are interested in signing Owen Beck from Liverpool in the January transfer window.

The report has claimed that Celtic, who won the Scottish Premiership title last season and are managed by former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, have been keen on a permanent deal for Beck.

The 21-year-old left-back spent the first half of the season on loan at Dundee from Liverpool. He is now back at his parent club.

The Athletic has noted that Celtic want(ed) to sign the youngster to “upgrade their competition at left-back”, but Beck “would have faced a fight to play so they were ruled out”.

Beck did well during his spell at Dundee, who have described his performances as “fantastic” and admitted that he “will be greatly missed”.

The Athletic has reported that Rangers manager Philippe Clement personally want(ed) to sign the left-back in the January transfer window.

Coventry City, Stoke City, Millwall and Hull City all have made enquires about a loan deal for Beck, but Liverpool have decided that he will be part of manager Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad due to injuries to Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson. He is rated highly by Klopp.

My View: Future bright for Owen Beck

In my opinion, the future of Owen Beck is bright. That he is going to play for the Liverpool first team in the second half of the season shows how good he is.

Beck did well during his loan spell at Dundee. The left-back made 17 appearances in the Scottish Premiership. He scored two goals and gave two assists in those games.

Celtic and Rangers are massive clubs and interest from them in Beck underlines how highly he is rated in the footballing community.

Celtic currently ‘not pursuing’ Owen Beck but could sign left-back

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing young left-back Owen Beck, and it’s a position that Brendan Rodgers could look to strengthen.

HIGHLIGHTS

Celtic have reportedly shown interest in signing Liverpool left-back Owen Beck, who was recalled from his loan spell with Dundee.

Beck has been in impressive form for Dundee this season, making him an attractive option for Celtic.

While there are discussions about Beck’s future, journalist Dean Jones doesn’t believe a move to Celtic is actively being pursued, but Brendan Rodgers may be looking to reinforce the left-back position.

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool left-back Owen Beck who was recently recalled from his loan spell with Dundee, and journalist Dean Jones has discussed the possibility of Brendan Rodgers’ side securing his signature, in an interview with GIVEMESPORT.

With the January transfer window opening a few days ago, Rodgers and his recruitment team will be in the market for reinforcements as they look to win the Scottish Premiership title once again.

After a tricky run of games throughout December, Celtic have started to turn things around, but they could be hoping for more additions to take their side to the next level.

With Beck returning to Liverpool, Celtic could make a play to bring him to the Scottish club. The 21-year-old has been in impressive form for Dundee this season, but the Merseyside outfit might want him playing in a better side in Scotland.

Celtic linked with a move for Beck

During the summer transfer window, Beck signed on loan with Dundee until the end of the season to gain first-team experience. However, Dundee announced earlier this week that Liverpool have opted to recall Beck from his loan spell, casting doubt over what the next step is for the young left-back.

A recent report from DaveOCKOP has suggested that Celtic and Rangers are both interested in taking Beck on loan for the remainder of the campaign. With Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas currently out injured, Jurgen Klopp might have chosen to bring Beck back to Anfield to provide cover at left-back, rather than to find him a new temporary deal away from the club.

Dundee boss Tony Docherty revealed back in December that the two clubs were in discussions regarding the future of Beck, possibly hinting that the Merseyside outfit have been considering finding him a new club to aid his development…

“We are in the middle of discussions. There is no confirmation of that just now but we are in discussions.”

The Evening Standard reported earlier in the campaign that Celtic were looking to sign Portuguese left-sided player Tiago Araujo. The Estoril star has featured at left-back or left midfield throughout this season, hinting that Rodgers is certainly looking to bring in reinforcements in this area of the pitch at some point this month.

Former Celtic striker Kenny Miller recently tipped the Scottish outfit to make a move for Beck after his return to Liverpool this month.

Kyogo Furuhashi now in ‘strange situation’ at Celtic

Dean Jones update – Celtic not pursuing Beck

Jones has suggested that he doesn’t believe Celtic are currently pursuing a move for Beck, but he can completely understand why Miller would be recommending that his former club target the young defender. The journalist adds that the left-back position could be an area in which Rodgers hopes to reinforce before the deadline at the end of the month. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones said…

“Yeah, I saw his comments around that one and I did find it interesting. I can completely understand why he would be thinking that way. I don’t think it’s being pursued. From anything I’ve heard and checked out, I don’t think that this is active in any way. But of course, we know that Rodgers is looking to lift the levels of this squad right now. And that left back area might well be a spot that he is going to be looking to target.”

Rodgers wants a striker

Reports in Denmark have suggested that Celtic are are one of the sides who are considering a move for Mathias Kvistgaarden. Another option for the Scottish outfit is Szymon Wlodarczyk, with journalist Mark Hendry claiming that the Polish forward is of interest to Celtic. Rodgers is likely to be losing one of his key forwards in Kyogo Furuhashi due to the Asia Cup later this month, so a centre-forward could be a priority.

Journalist Jones previously told GIVEMESPORT that a move for Kvistgaarden could be more likely in the winter window due to his reasonable price, rather than Wlodarczyk. Either way, we may see Celtic splash the cash on a new number nine before the deadline.

Misinformation and Poor Reporting’ Bobby Madden Shuts Down Rangers Excuses

Former SPFL referee Bobby Madden has weighed in on the decision not to award Rangers a penalty in their clash against Celtic.

Madden’s detailed explanation sheds light on the intricacies of the VAR process, emphasising that, despite Rangers fans’ grievances and conspiratorial whispers, a penalty was never on the cards due to an offside identified in the build-up to the incident.

Soccer Football – Scottish Premiership – Celtic v Rangers – Celtic Park, Glasgow, Scotland, Britain – December 30, 2023 A big screen displays a VAR review message for possible handball Action Images via Reuters/Craig Brough

According to Madden, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) would have reviewed the potential penalty, and even if it had initially been given on the field, the Attacking Phase Possession (APP) check would have revealed the offside, nullifying the penalty decision. This multi-step process, while complex, aims to maintain fairness and transparency in the game’s officiating.

The former referee’s clarification comes amidst a backdrop of a meltdown from the Rangers’ fanbase and calls from the club’s management and board for the VAR room’s audio to be made public.

The demands come across as petulant and childish, especially considering Madden’s own leanings towards Rangers, which lend credence to his impartial assessment of the situation.

Madden’s explanation aims to dispel myths of bias and assure all parties that the right decision was reached according to the laws of the game.

He wrote on his Instagram:

“Another Old Firm game has come with its fair share of controversy and the usual blend of misinformation and poor reporting.

In my view, we witnessed a clear punishable handball offence. Such incidents are notoriously difficult for referees to detect, and thus the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system is tasked with reviewing all decisions in the penalty area.

Had the penalty been awarded on the field, it would have been subsequently overturned once VAR reviewed the Attacking Phase Possession (APP).

Since no initial award was made, VAR would have examined the play; if VAR determined a penalty was warranted, they would have also reviewed the APP to ascertain any offside positions. To prevent any misunderstanding, an on-field review by the referee would be necessitated to make the final call. If the referee on review agreed with the penalty, they would then highlight the offside to reset play accordingly.

If, however, the referee concluded that no penalty occurred, the game would resume from the point of interruption. Admittedly, this process can seem laborious, but it exists to ensure clarity in the decision-making process.

In essence, VAR did not believe a penalty was due. The later release of an offside image served to justify the decision not to intervene. Ultimately, it seems the correct decision was made.

A point of clarification: if no offside had occurred in the APP and a penalty had been given, it would not constitute a cautionable offence. It certainly wouldn’t be grounds for a second yellow card for handball, contrary to what some might argue.

Rangers lead ‘three-horse’ race for versatile £2.5m winger as Celtic target drops subtle transfer clue

All the latest Celtic and Rangers news and transfer rumours on Sunday…

Celtic claimed the derby day bragging rights for a second successive Old Firm clash against Rangers after edging out their rivals 2-1 at Parkhead on Saturday.

The Hoops increased their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to eight points in the process heading into the New Year, with Rangers possessing two games in-hand. With both sides applying the finishing touches on their transfer preparations, we have rounded up all the latest news surrounding both sides on Sunday, December 31st.

Philippe Clement has responded to rumours that Rangers are ready to splash out £2.5million on Vitesse Arnhem winger Million Manhoef.

As per a Scottish Sun report, the Ibrox club have tracked the highly-rated Dutch youth international for the past 12 months and new director of football recruitment Nils Koppen is thought to be an admirer of the player, who turns 22 next month.

Manhoef, who operates mainly on the right-hand side but if also effective on the opposite flank or as a full-back, has 18 months remaining on his current deal. It is believed Vitesse would be ‘willing to listen’ to offers in January with English Champions leaders Leicester City and Preston North End among other contenders eyeing his signature.

Addressing possible transfer movement, Clement refused to be drawn on speculation. He told BBC Sportsound: “I never speak about about players we are interested in or not because then I can speak every day about rumours, there are so many rumours in Glasgow that are wrong.

“We will speak about players that are in the building and with Fabio (Silva) it is the case and this year he’ll push like the rest to make it a great season. How many are we looking to bring in? These are things we talked about with the board, everyone’s aligned about that and we’ll see what is possible in January.

“Everyone is working hard and pushing to get the maximum out of what we want. I also want to see players pushing to stay in the team and at the club.”

Celtic target drops subtle transfer clue

Celtic-linked Tiago Araujo appears to be keeping a close eye on his transfer suitors after congratulating fellow countryman Paulo Bernardo on his Old Firm goal against Rangers.

The £4m-rated Estoril wing back has emerged as a potential January signing option for manager Brendan Rodgers as he searches for stronger competition to compete with Greg Taylor for the left-back spot.

The 22-year-old Portuguese youth international is considered to be versatile and is capable of adopting a more attacking role. Fans have been left excited by the prospect of him heading to Parkhead next month and the player has now dropped a subtle club that Glasgow could be his next possible destination.

Araujo heightened transfer speculation last night after responding to Bernardo’s social media post of him celebrating his opening goal at Parkhead. He replied: “Have you scored yet?” accompanied by three heart-eye emojis.

Celtic are in the market for quality in the January window…

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to add quality to the ranks at Parkhead in January and his side are now reportedly advancing in negotiations for a known target.

Celtic gearing up for busy January window

Despite a comfortable 3-0 victory over Dundee at Dens Park on Boxing Day, Celtic will be keen to strengthen in January and Rodgers has made his intent to bolster his squad known over the last few weeks.

Speaking earlier this month cited via Sky Sports, the Irishman signalled his intention to add a high calibre of player mid-season, as he stated: “There’s no doubt now that, one, the squad will come down in numbers and obviously we need to add quality. There is no dressing it up, the group lost real quality players in the summer. That’s something that over the coming windows we will look to improve on.”

Boost for Rodgers as Celtic make aggressive January call on Matt O’Riley

Bringing in a striker has become a priority for the Hoops and their need is exacerbated by the fact that Kyogo Furuhashi, Oh Hyeon-gyu and Daizen Maeda could all head off to represent their respective nations on Asian Cup duty. Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Fabio Silva is believed to have been offered on loan as a potential short-term solution to the Scottish Premiership champions’ conceivable shortage of frontmen and it remains to be seen whether the Portugal Under-21 international will move to Parkhead.

Hacken midfielder Romeo Amane, Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski and Brondby talent Mathias Kvistgaarden are all other names who have been mentioned in connection with Celtic in previous weeks. Now, comments from the manager of a known Hoops target have come to light suggesting that Celtic may be moving closer to completing a signing, as cited by a report.

Celtic “advance” in Jung negotiations

As per reports from South Korea, cited by The Daily Record, Celtic have managed to “advance” in negotiations with Gwangju midfielder Jung Ho-Yeon, who was scouted by Hoops’ chiefs in the summer transfer window.

The Hoops have previously dipped into the South Korean market to recruit Yang Hyun-jun and Oh and could now be set to return to familiar territory for the 23-year-old midfielder.

Speaking to local media, Gwangju manager Lee Jung-Hyo detailed the latest on the situation, stating: “Jung Ho-Yeon is currently in talks to advance to Europe from Gwangju, but still have a long way to go. If you go to Europe now, you are bound to end up in a clumsy situation. It is wise to prepare well like Cho Gue-sung (who signed for Midtjylland last summer) and choose the team and league well.”

Labelled a “prospect” by Asian football expert Dario Focardi, the South Korea Under-23 international has gone on to make 34 appearances in 2023, registering two goals and three assists (Jung statistics – Transfermarkt).

Celtic will need to attract quality reinforcements if they are to retain their Scottish Premiership title and Jung looks like a midfielder who could add a different dimension to Rodgers’ engine room.

The Celtic January transfer rumour mill has thrown the name of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, Fabio Silva into the hat.

The 21-year-old was once a £35.6 million club-record transfer for Wolves, but now he is struggling to come off the bench for the bottom-half English Premier League side.

With Brendan Rodgers wanting attacking reinforcements next month at Celtic, the name of Fabio Silva has been mentioned, as reported by TEAMtalk.

Andy Walker has shared that in Brendan Rodgers’ first spell at Celtic, the one-time wonderkid was linked with the club, as he told Go Radio.

But given his struggles at Wolves, it now seems like he will be heading for the exit door in January.

Andy Walker has shared that in Brendan Rodgers’ first spell at Celtic, the one-time wonderkid was linked with the club, as he told Go Radio.

But given his struggles at Wolves, it now seems like he will be heading for the exit door in January.

Given the huge sum of money Wolves paid for Fabio Silva, and the fact that his contract runs until 2026, then there’s no chance of a permanent move to Celtic.

But never rule out a loan deal, with Andy Walker talking about how the versatile forward has ‘skill’ and ‘ability’ in his game.

“He was on Celtic’s radar a number of years ago,” said Walker. “I remember doing a game down south and he was playing for Wolves. They were all talking about the interest from Celtic.

Approach made: Celtic ask about move to sign “highly talented” £15M striker, they’ ve had a reply

The Scottish Premiership side are looking to bolster their attacking ranks in January.

Celtic have made an approach to ask about a deal to bring one of their long-term targets to the Scottish Premiership, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

Hoops eyeing Kvistgaarden

Ahead of January, Brendan Rodgers will be assessing his options in the market to see if there are any players he could strengthen his squad with. One recently identified is Brondby forward Mathias Kvistgaarden if claims are to be believed.

The Bhoys are reportedly preparing an improved offer for the striker having seen their opening bid turned down over the summer, but should a deal for him fail to come to fruition for whatever reason, the hierarchy appear to have alternative centre-forward targets.

Sturm Graz’s Szymon Wlodarczyk only put pen to paper at his club during the previous window from Gornik Zabrze where he’s so far made 28 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Wlodarczyk statistics), but he was on the board’s radar long before his most recent move.

Back in January, Mark Hendry first claimed that Poland’s youth international was of interest to the green and white stripes, though a switch hasn’t yet taken place, hence why he moved elsewhere, and it still sounds like the 20-year-old won’t be making the trip to Glasgow anytime soon despite new efforts.

Celtic submit enquiry for Wlodarczyk

According to Football Scotland, Celtic have asked about signing Wlodarczyk again next month, but after learning his price tag in a response from Sturm Graz, have decided that they couldn’t afford to complete a deal in January.

“Football Scotland can also reveal Celtic reached out to Sturm Graz in an effort to revisit another former transfer target, Szymon Wlodarczyk, but were told his valuation has sky-rocketed to around £15m which would financially be out of their reach in January.”

Wlodarczyk is a “highly talented” striker

Since joining Sturm Graz, Wlodarczyk has racked up 11 contributions (nine goals and two assists) from 28 appearances, displaying how prolific he can be in the final third, and he’s able to pose a constant threat to the opposition’s defence in the attacking areas of the pitch.

Sponsored by Adidas, Walbrzych’s native has recorded 32 shots over the course of the current campaign which is more than any other of his fellow teammates, highlighting what a standout performer he is in front of the net compared to his peers (FBRef – Sturm Graz statistics).

Standing at 6 foot 2, Rodgers’ target is also able to provide a real physical presence up top with his height, with his ability to win aerial duels making him a real handful for any backline to deal with, alongside how dangerous he can be with the ball at his feet.

Described by football scout Jacek Kulig, Wlodarczyk is a “highly talented” player with an extremely bright future ahead of him, but with Celtic not set to splash the cash to get their long-term target in the coming weeks, it could prove to be a blow considering the positive impact that he may have been able to make.

HIGHLIGHTS

Celtic “look like favourites” to sign Scott McKenna during the winter transfer window at Parkhead, with the Nottingham Forest centre-back out of favour at The City Groud.

McKenna has struggled for game time during the 2023/24 season and could be looking for a return to Scotland to reignite his career.

McKenna’s experience and potential arrival at Celtic could provide a boost to Brendan Rodgers’ backline and help them secure a third consecutive Scottish Premiership title.

Celtic “look like favourites” to sign Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna at Parkhead during the winter transfer window, as talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook provides GIVEMESPORT with an internal update from “somebody very reliable.”

Brendan Rodgers enjoyed a positive first half of the 2023/24 season upon his return to the Scottish Premiership giants but will hope he can bolster his squad to strengthen their grip on the league title this term.

McKenna has recently found himself out of favour at Forest, with Nuno Espirito Santo unable to provide him with opportunities in the first team following Steve Cooper’s departure. A return to Celtic could be on the cards before the window’s 1st February deadline, with the Hoops not the only outfit in Scotland interested in securing the centre-back’s signature.

McKenna linked with a return to Scotland

The 2023/24 season has represented a challenging campaign for McKenna, who hasn’t appeared in a Premier League squad for Nottingham Forest since a 1-1 home draw with Burnley in September 2023. The 27-year-old had been banished from first-team training by former manager Cooper and has failed to regain his place in the squad under the tutelage of new head coach Nuno.

McKenna’s lack of opportunities could result in his departure from The City Ground during the current winter transfer window, with a return to Scotland on the cards. According to Sky Sports, both Celtic and Rangers want to sign the 30-cap Scotland international before February’s market deadline. McKenna could move to Parkhead or Ibrox on an initial loan move before securing a permanent deal on a free transfer when his Forest contract expires on 30th June.

The £20,000 per-week earner already has experience in Scottish football, having signed for the East Midlands giants from Aberdeen in a deal worth £5m in September 2020 before helping them win promotion to the Premier League during the 2021/22 season. But, having made just five appearances for Forest during the 2023/24 campaign, McKenna could look to engineer a return north of the border, with Celtic just one potential destination on the cards for the centre-back.

Rodgers has already welcomed two centre-back additions this term, with Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke arriving through the doors at Parkhead, as the Northern Irishman looks to tweak an already dominant Celtic side. But McKenna’s arrival could offer the Hoops’ backline a vital bit of experience that could see them over the line in their quest to secure a third consecutive Scottish Premiership title.

Alex Crook transfer update on McKenna

Crook believes that Celtic “look like favourites” to sign McKenna in the coming weeks and has been informed that both Glasgow giants are interested in his services. The talkSPORT reporter has hinted that a move to the Scottish Premiership could prove helpful for the centre-back. Crook told GIVEMESPORT:

“Celtic look like favourites to sign McKenna. Somebody very reliable told me that both big Scottish clubs are in for him. He wasn’t playing at Forest towards the end of Cooper’s reign. His camp never denied rumours about a fallout with Cooper, but he’s not come back in under Nuno. I think he’s probably just not quite quick enough for the Premier League now, so maybe the Scottish Premiership would be a good move for him.”

Celtic contract news, including an update on the future of Joe Hart

While Celtic will focus on bringing in fresh blood during the 2024 winter transfer window, Rodgers must concentrate on securing the futures of some of his most important players as they head into the final months of their contracts at Parkhead. However, the former Liverpool head coach has revealed that any talks over a new deal for Joe Hart will have to wait until closer to the end of the season. Speaking about the stopper’s future, Rodgers told reporters (via the Daily Record):

“There will be positions in the summer we’ll be able to improve on, and it’s the same in January. But I love working with Joe [Hart]; he’s a great guy. Hopefully, he continues. We haven’t spoken about it. At that age [37], I think he’s just happy to be playing. Joe’s family is down south so he has shown incredible commitment to be up here.”

Meanwhile, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT (31st December 2023) that Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley has the potential to become the next John McGinn, following reported interest from Aston Villa. According to Sky Sports in December, the Villans are joined by West Ham United, Atletico Madrid, Inter and PSV Eindhoven in the race to sign the Denmark international.

So, what has been reported about CelticLiverpool and Owen Beck?

Football Scotland can also reveal Celtic reached out to Sturm Graz in an effort to revisit another former transfer target, Szymon Wlodarczyk, but were told his valuation has sky-rocketed to around £15m which would financially be out of their reach in January.”
