Julian Alvarez Joins Atletico Madrid in Permanent Transfer
Julian Alvarez has officially completed a permanent transfer to Spanish club Atletico Madrid, marking the end of his highly successful two-year tenure at Manchester City. The Argentine striker, who joined City from River Plate in 2022, leaves behind an impressive legacy at the Etihad.
During his time with Manchester City, the 24-year-old made 103 appearances across all competitions, scoring 36 goals and playing a pivotal role in helping the club secure six major trophies. Alvarez made an immediate impact in his debut 2022/23 season, contributing significantly to City’s historic Treble under Pep Guardiola’s leadership.
Known for his sharp goal-scoring instincts, keen awareness, vision, and tireless work ethic, Alvarez was a versatile asset to the team, capable of performing in various roles. His contributions were instrumental as City clinched the Premier League, FA Cup, and their first-ever Champions League title in a memorable campaign. During that season, Alvarez played in 49 matches and netted 17 goals, helping to etch City’s name into football history.
In the following season, Alvarez continued to play a crucial role, helping City achieve another milestone by becoming the first men’s team in English history to win four consecutive league titles. He featured in more matches—54 in all competitions—than any other player, contributing 19 goals and 13 assists.
Alvarez also played a key role in City’s victories in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup and the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup. Notably, he scored twice in a 4-0 final win against Brazilian side Fluminense in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
On the international stage, Alvarez’s influence was equally significant. He played a vital role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in Qatar 2022, scoring four goals, including a brace in the 3-0 semi-final win over Croatia. More recently, he was part of the Argentine squad that won the Copa America at this year’s tournament in the United States.
Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Alvarez expressed deep emotion as he bid farewell to the club. He thanked the directors, technical staff, and his teammates for their support, guidance, and camaraderie, which helped him grow both as a player and a person. Alvarez also expressed his gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support, saying he would always cherish his time at City and continue to support the club wherever he goes.
Manchester City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, also praised Alvarez, commending his first-class attitude and significant improvement since joining the club. He noted that Alvarez’s trophy haul speaks to his winning mentality and expressed excitement to see how the striker continues to develop in the future.
As Julian Alvarez embarks on the next chapter of his career at Atletico Madrid, everyone at Manchester City wishes him the very best.
