Man United’s thunderbolt from Garnacho helps them tame Everton’s rage.
Manchester United put salt in Everton’s wounds with a 3-0 win, with Alejandro Garnacho’s magnificent overhead kick helping the Red Devils stay in the Premier League relegation zone.
Everton’s first match after suffering a 10-point deduction for financial rules violations was welcomed with a raucous reception at Goodison Park, with thousands of placards labeling the Premier League “corrupt” being held aloft.
But Garnacho delivered a fantastic piece of talent that will go down as one of the great Premier League goals just three minutes into the game.
The Argentine jumped to meet Diogo Dalot’s hanging cross on the volley and send it into Jordan Pickford’s top left corner.
That flash of brilliance was out of character for United, but Marcus Rashford’s penalty and Anthony Martial’s score ensured Erik ten Hag’s side had now won five of their previous six league games.
Despite a difficult season, United has risen to sixth place in the rankings, just six points behind leaders Arsenal.
The visitors had to deal with a tense situation as Everton fans vented their rage on the authorities after being handed the most severe sporting suspension in Premier League history.
After battling relegation for two seasons, Sean Dyche’s team appeared to be out of trouble thanks to a strong recent run of form.
However, they are currently only a goal difference away from the bottom of the table and five points from safety.
Everton were left to lament a string of squandered opportunities after Garnacho stunned the loud home crowd early on.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin failed to convert two good headed chances.
Only a goalline clearance from Kobbie Mainoo prevented Dwight McNeil from equalizing after Andre Onana parried Calvert-Lewin’s original effort.
As Everton failed to cement their advantage before the interval, Abdoulaye Doucoure wasted another wonderful opportunity.
The home crowd’s sense that the world is against them was exacerbated when VAR interfered early in the second quarter to award United a dubious penalty.
Referee John Brooks initially booked Martial for diving after he went down in the box in response to Ashley Young’s challenge.
The contact appeared to be insignificant for VAR to intervene, but Brooks reversed his ruling after checking a replay.
Bruno Fernandes gave Rashford the penalty spot, and the England international took advantage of the opportunity to score his first club goal since September 3.
In the absence of the injured Rasmus Hojlund, Martial made a rare start and capped off United’s biggest league win of the season with a neat finish from Fernandes’ through pass 15 minutes from time.
