Manchester United players rate Kobbie Mainoo as good against Everton.
Manchester United secured three points against Everton thanks to a spectacular goal from Alejandro Garnacho.
The Argentina international scored in the third minute with a fantastic overhead strike that left Jordan Pickford helpless. The goal startled the home crowd, which had staged a loud and visible protest against the Premier League’s decision to punish them 10 points for financial violations.
Fellow academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo performed admirably in his maiden Premier League start, looking poised on the ball and clearing off the line in the first half. In the second half, Marcus Rashford scored a penalty granted by VAR after Ashley Young fouled Anthony Martial, and the win was sealed by a superb strike from Martial, who continued his excellent goal-scoring streak against the Merseysiders.
Samuel Luckhurst, our chief United writer, was in the press box to cover the game, and here are his player ratings from the game.
Onana, Andre
To retain another clean sheet, he made good saves against Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the first half and Idrissa Gueye in the second. 7
Dalot, Diogo
Alejandro Garnacho’s stunning volley turned a reasonable cross into an assist, and he had his best defensive performance of the year. 7
Lindelof, Victor
Everton started steadily until Calvert-Lewin began to strain on him, but United’s goal early in the second half demoralized them. 7
Mr. Harry Maguire
Dominant over Calvert-Lewin, who had to try his luck against Lindelof, and serenaded by United supporters on another successful day for their former captain. 8
Mr. Luke Shaw
It made a significant difference in the defense’s balance and added some vitality to the attack. As an added bonus, he completed more than 70 minutes. 8
McTominay, Scott
Busy without making much of an impact other than the odd foul that irritated the audience. Calmer after United took a 2-0 lead. 6
Mr. Kobbie Mainoo
From the start, he was composed and confident, and his willingness to drop back into his own third to recover the ball was crucial when he cleared off the line. The match’s MVP. 8
Marcus Rashford (England)
In the first half, he was exactly like his club form all season. Some selfish dribbles resulted in futile charges into cul-de-sacs. He was given a sentence and executed it beautifully to save the day. 6
Fernandes, Bruno
United essentially failed to create a chance in the first half but, true to form, contributed to the second and third goals. 7
Garnacho, Alejandro
His overhead kick is the season’s first goal. A technical gem of a goal that brought Goodison Park to its knees. 8
Martial, Anthony
On the bench for his first Premier League start since September 3. Won the penalty, which was rightfully awarded, and scored his ninth goal in 17 games against his patsies. 7
Subs
Fabien Pellistri
Contributed to the achievement of the third goal. 7
Sofyan Amrabat’s
Regular cameo.
Wan-Bissaka Aaron Wan-Bissaka
A few more minutes. 6
Hannibal
Late appearance.
Manager
The risky choice of Mainoo paid off, and United are a superior team with him on the field. Bringing Shaw back into the game was extremely useful. 8
