Netflix Announces Elvis ’77: A Poetic and Unflinching Look at the King’s Final Chapter

Netflix is set to premiere Elvis ’77, a gripping new documentary series exploring the final years and lasting legacy of Elvis Presley. Slated for release in early 2026, the four-part series aims to deliver the most intimate and emotionally resonant portrait of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll yet.

Directed by Emmy-winner Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?), Elvis ’77 promises to move beyond the glitter and stage lights to examine the man behind the myth—at a time when fame, fatigue, and cultural pressure collided in dramatic fashion.

The title refers to the year of Elvis’s death—1977—but the series goes well beyond his final moments. With unprecedented access to private archives, home recordings, and personal correspondence, the documentary will trace the winding road that brought Presley from Tupelo, Mississippi, to Graceland… and ultimately to a world that idolized him to death.

“Elvis was many things—a cultural revolution, a musical pioneer, a media invention, and a man struggling to find himself in the machine,” said director Garbus. “Elvis ’77 is not just about how it ended, but how that ending was years in the making.”

The series is produced in collaboration with the Elvis Presley Estate and will feature remastered performance footage, newly restored behind-the-scenes clips, and exclusive interviews with friends, family, and critics. Among those appearing are Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter Riley Keough, and several musicians and producers who worked with Elvis during his final sessions.

Elvis ’77 also doesn’t shy away from the harder questions. The series will confront the darker realities of Elvis’s life—his deteriorating health, substance dependency, creative frustration, and the pressures of constant reinvention under the weight of his own image.

Executive producer Scott Hendricks explains: “This isn’t another celebration of Elvis the brand. It’s about Elvis the person. At his peak, he embodied the American dream. By the end, he exposed the cost of living it.”

As Netflix continues expanding its catalog of award-winning music documentaries, Elvis ’77 stands out for its cinematic approach, emotional depth, and critical lens. With renewed global interest in Presley following recent film adaptations and biopics, this series offers a rare opportunity to revisit his story with nuance, honesty, and empathy.

For fans and newcomers alike, Elvis ’77 promises a moving, multi-dimensional exploration of a man whose voice shaped a generation—and whose silence still echoes nearly five decades later.
