An Up-Close Portrait of a Southern Rock Revivalist
Netflix has announced a forthcoming original documentary series centered on Brandon Coleman, the magnetic frontman of rising Southern rock band The Red Clay Strays. Titled “Brandon Coleman: Southern Soul,” the series is scheduled to premiere in early 2026 and will chronicle the journey of a small-town Alabama native who’s redefining Americana for a new generation.
Best known for his gritty, gospel-infused voice and electric stage presence, Coleman has helped lead The Red Clay Strays from local dive bars to national acclaim. Blending Southern rock, country, blues, and soul, the band has carved out a powerful identity — and Coleman has become its beating heart. Now, Southern Soul will pull back the curtain on his life, his struggles, and the soul behind the sound.
“This is about where I come from and what we’ve been through to get here,” Coleman said in a press statement. “It’s not always pretty, but it’s real — and that’s what our music is all about.”
The multi-episode series will explore Coleman’s early life in Mobile County, Alabama, the formation of The Red Clay Strays, and their grassroots rise in a modern music landscape often dominated by trends. Drawing from never-before-seen footage, the documentary promises an unfiltered look at life on the road, the pressure of sudden fame, and the personal battles that shaped Coleman’s voice — both musically and emotionally.
Produced by Box to Box Films, known for their success with Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Break Point, the series will also include interviews with family members, bandmates, and music legends who see The Red Clay Strays as the vanguard of a new Southern music movement.
Director Lauren Greenfield (The Kingmaker, Generation Wealth) brings a cinematic lens to Coleman’s story, highlighting the tension between tradition and reinvention that defines both his music and personal journey. The docuseries will feature stripped-down performances, writing sessions, and raw moments on and off stage, capturing a musician who wears his heart — and his roots — on his sleeve.
Netflix describes Brandon Coleman: Southern Soul as “a visceral and inspiring portrait of a modern American troubadour — grounded in Southern grit and reaching for something bigger.”
The announcement has stirred anticipation among fans of The Red Clay Strays and roots music alike, many of whom have followed Coleman’s rise from word-of-mouth buzz to breakout act. A teaser trailer is expected in late 2025, with the full series landing on Netflix in early 2026.
With Southern Soul, Brandon Coleman’s story — much like his voice — is set to resonate far and wide.
