Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of a new documentary series chronicling the rise, impact, and internal dynamics of the legendary British rock band, The Police. Titled Every Breath: The Story of The Police, the series promises an in-depth look at one of the most iconic bands of the late 20th century — tracing their journey from punk-infused beginnings to global superstardom.
The Police, formed in London in 1977, were composed of frontman Sting (vocals and bass), Andy Summers (guitar), and Stewart Copeland (drums). With their distinctive blend of punk, reggae, and new wave influences, the trio carved out a unique space in rock history. Hits like “Roxanne,” “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” and the chart-topping “Every Breath You Take” remain timeless classics. The band’s brief yet explosive run from 1977 to 1986 — punctuated by creative clashes and immense commercial success — makes for compelling documentary material.
According to Netflix, the docuseries will span four hour-long episodes and will feature never-before-seen footage, archival interviews, and newly recorded conversations with the band members themselves. The series will also include commentary from contemporaries, music critics, and modern artists who cite The Police as a major influence.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Asif Kapadia, known for his award-winning work on Amy and Senna, the documentary aims to go beyond the surface of rock fame. It will explore the band’s cultural legacy, the pressures of their meteoric rise, and the interpersonal tensions that ultimately led to their breakup at the height of their success.
“We didn’t just want to make another rock-doc,” Kapadia explained in a statement. “This is a story about chemistry — musical and personal — and what happens when three very different people create something unforgettable, but at great cost.”
In addition to examining their music and relationships, Every Breath will also look at the band’s groundbreaking use of music videos, their global tours, and their enduring legacy — especially following their 2007 reunion tour, which was one of the highest-grossing of all time.
Fans can expect a soundtrack packed with remastered hits, rare live performances, and candid moments from the band’s prime years. Netflix has not yet confirmed the release date but has teased a late 2025 premiere.
As the appetite for music documentaries continues to grow, Every Breath: The Story of The Police is poised to deliver a powerful blend of nostalgia, insight, and raw emotion. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, it will offer a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a band that helped shape modern music.
