New Docuseries to Explore the Life and Legacy of a Formula 1 Icon
Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of “Beyond the Grid: Lewis Hamilton”, a documentary series offering an unprecedented look into the life, career, and cultural impact of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton. Set to premiere in early 2026, the series promises to go far deeper than the racetrack, capturing the story of an athlete whose influence extends well beyond sport.
Produced in collaboration with Hamilton and Box to Box Films — the team behind Netflix’s global hit Formula 1: Drive to Survive — the series will chart Hamilton’s journey from a working-class upbringing in Stevenage to the pinnacle of international motorsport. It will also explore his transformation into a cultural trailblazer, activist, and entrepreneur.
“This project is about more than racing,” Hamilton said in a statement. “It’s about breaking down barriers, chasing dreams, and inspiring the next generation to do the same. I’m proud to tell my story the way it was lived.”
Beyond the Grid will feature never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews with Hamilton’s inner circle, and insights from fellow drivers, team members, and prominent figures in sport, fashion, and activism. Key moments include his historic championship wins with Mercedes-AMG Petronas, his outspoken stance on racial and social justice, and his growing influence in areas such as sustainability and diversity in motorsport.
Netflix describes the series as “an intimate portrait of a once-in-a-generation figure whose impact redefines what it means to be a champion.” Viewers can expect a compelling blend of personal reflection, archival storytelling, and cinematic production, led by acclaimed producer James Gay-Rees (Senna, Amy).
The series will also spotlight the Hamilton Commission — a research initiative founded by Lewis to improve Black representation in UK motorsport — along with his ventures in fashion, music, and philanthropy. From the paddock to the red carpet, Beyond the Grid aims to offer the most comprehensive and humanizing look at the man behind the helmet.
With its mix of sports, culture, and social commentary, Beyond the Grid is poised to follow in the footsteps of Netflix’s most celebrated sports documentaries, including The Last Dance and Beckham. The first official trailer is expected to drop later this year.
As Hamilton continues to break records and challenge expectations, this series promises to capture not just his legacy — but the movement he’s helped ignite.
