Netflix has announced a new multi-part documentary series celebrating the life and legacy of Rory Gallagher, the Irish blues-rock virtuoso whose fiery guitar playing and relentless touring helped shape modern rock music. The series, tentatively titled “Against the Grain: The Rory Gallagher Story,” is set to premiere globally later this year.
Known for his explosive live performances, raw authenticity, and a deep commitment to musical integrity, Rory Gallagher remains one of the most revered yet underrated figures in rock history. Despite never chasing fame or mainstream acclaim, Gallagher built a fiercely loyal fanbase that continues to grow nearly three decades after his untimely death in 1995 at the age of 47.
The Netflix series promises to shed new light on Gallagher’s remarkable journey—from his early days fronting the power trio Taste, to his groundbreaking solo career, and his refusal to bow to commercial trends in the music industry. Using archival footage, rare interviews, concert recordings, and intimate commentary from friends, collaborators, and musicians he inspired, Against the Grain aims to offer the most comprehensive portrait of Gallagher ever committed to film.
“Rory’s story isn’t just about music—it’s about dedication, grit, and living life on your own terms,” said series director Colm O’Callaghan. “He never played for charts or trends. He played for truth, and that truth still resonates today.”
Notably private and almost defiantly humble, Gallagher famously turned down offers to join major acts like The Rolling Stones and Deep Purple, preferring to carve out a unique and uncompromised path. He performed over 2,000 shows across the globe, becoming a cult hero for guitar lovers and rock purists alike.
The documentary will also explore Gallagher’s influence on generations of musicians, with appearances by Brian May, Slash, Johnny Marr, The Edge, and Joe Bonamassa, among others—all of whom cite Gallagher as a towering influence.
Netflix’s Head of Music Content, Sophie Harding, noted,
“There’s a raw electricity in Rory Gallagher’s music. He’s an icon who never chased the spotlight, and yet he helped shape the DNA of blues and rock guitar. We’re honored to bring his story to a global audience.”
With a blend of blistering performances, quiet moments, and never-before-told stories, Against the Grain is shaping up to be a must-watch for music fans worldwide—and a long-overdue tribute to one of rock’s most soulful players.
