Netflix to Release Documentary Series on Ivan Cornejo: Melancholy Strings

Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a new original documentary series chronicling the meteoric rise of regional Mexican music sensation Ivan Cornejo. Titled Melancholy Strings, the series is expected to premiere globally in early 2026, offering fans an intimate look at one of Gen Z’s most emotionally resonant artists.

At just 20 years old, Cornejo has already taken the music world by storm. With his heartfelt lyrics, soulful guitar playing, and a unique blend of regional Mexican music, sad boy aesthetics, and Gen Z vulnerability, he’s captivated millions — without ever losing his quiet, introverted spirit.

Directed by Grammy-nominated filmmaker Carlos López Estrada (Summertime, Blindspotting), Melancholy Strings traces Cornejo’s roots in Riverside, California, where he taught himself guitar through YouTube tutorials after a heartbreak in middle school. The series follows his journey from anonymous SoundCloud uploads to chart-topping success with his debut album Alma Vacía.

The docuseries features never-before-seen footage from Cornejo’s early home recordings, behind-the-scenes clips from his first tours, and exclusive interviews with family, friends, producers, and fans who witnessed his rise. Cornejo himself provides voice-over narration, speaking candidly about his experiences with heartbreak, depression, and sudden fame.

Cornejo’s music speaks directly to a generation of bilingual and bicultural youth straddling identities, languages, and emotional realities. His lyrics often blend Spanish and English, heartbreak and hope, minimalism and tradition — earning comparisons to both Peso Pluma and Joji for his genre-bending sound.

Netflix describes the series as “a celebration of pain turned into poetry, and a testament to how music can heal even the quietest souls.”

While rooted in traditional Mexican styles like sierreño and banda, Cornejo’s sound is undeniably modern. The documentary delves into how his music connects across cultural lines, breaking through language barriers on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Spotify.

His second album, Dañado, debuted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Latin charts and earned him critical acclaim as one of the most promising voices in Latin music.

In a rare on-camera interview, Cornejo says:

“I don’t talk much in real life… but in music, I can say everything I feel.”

Melancholy Strings is set to be more than just a music documentary — it’s a portrait of emotional honesty, quiet strength, and cultural transformation. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just discovering his music, Netflix promises an unforgettable journey through the soul of Ivan Cornejo.
