In a move that has caught both the music and film worlds by surprise, Ozzy Osbourne has officially named Jason Momoa as his temporary stand-in for select public appearances following his retirement from live performing. The announcement came just days after Osbourne’s emotional farewell concert with Black Sabbath—titled Back to the Beginning—held at Villa Park in Birmingham on July 5, 2025.
The Prince of Darkness bid a powerful goodbye to the stage that night, closing a chapter that spanned over five decades and reshaped the very definition of heavy metal. But while Ozzy may have stepped back from the spotlight, he’s made it clear that the spirit of Sabbath and his legacy will live on—with a little help from Hollywood.
The Aquaman and Game of Thrones star is known for his larger-than-life personality and deep roots in rock and metal culture. A frequent presence at metal shows and a passionate fan of Black Sabbath, the 45-year-old actor was spotted in the mosh pit during Pantera’s explosive opening set at Ozzy’s final show. According to Osbourne, the two shared a candid moment backstage that sparked the idea.
“Jason’s got the energy, the passion, and the wild spirit to carry the torch for a bit,” Ozzy said at a post-show press conference. “He’s not singing—nobody can do that—but he’ll bring the Ozzy vibe to some special events.”
Sharon Osbourne, both Ozzy’s wife and longtime manager, expanded on the idea. Momoa will not be fronting Black Sabbath in the traditional sense, but rather taking on a ceremonial role—hosting charity events, introducing tribute performances, and possibly even narrating or participating in upcoming rock documentaries.
“Ozzy’s done with the stage, but Jason’s got that larger-than-life presence to keep the spirit alive,” Sharon explained. “This is about preserving the energy and legacy for fans in a new and exciting way.”
Momoa, who has long worn his love for metal on his sleeve, expressed his gratitude and excitement. “Mate, I’m honored to channel the Prince of Darkness. I’ll make sure it’s loud, crazy, and full of love for Ozzy.”
Fan reactions online have ranged from amused disbelief to enthusiastic support, with many calling the collaboration “unexpectedly perfect.” As Osbourne now focuses on writing his upcoming memoir Last Rites and continuing his charity efforts, Momoa’s role ensures that Ozzy’s influence won’t disappear from the stage just yet.
In true metal fashion, the madness lives on—just with a new face behind the mayhem.
