Everton have had a turbulent few weeks after receiving a 10-point deduction for a breach of the Premier League’s financial rules and been put into the relegation zone.
The message has been obvious from the club’s board level ever since, with director of football Kevin Thelwell claiming that the punishment will just provide “additional fuel” to Sean Dyche’s team. That was evident tonight against longtime adversaries Manchester United.
Prior to their point deduction, the Toffees were in 14th place in the competition, a long way from the bottom three. This was bolstered by a return of only one loss in five league games, which saw them turn around some unfavorable early-season form. Even that defeat at Anfield was mostly due to Ashley Young’s early red card.
