Stevie Nicks Reflects on Her Suspended Tour and the Personal Toll It Took

Legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks has opened up about a deeply challenging chapter in her career—the suspension of her solo tour in the late 1980s due to serious health struggles. The interruption wasn’t just a logistical setback, but a profound personal crisis that forced the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman to confront chronic illness and addiction at the height of her fame.

The tour, launched in support of her solo work following the success of albums like Bella Donna and The Wild Heart, came to a halt when Nicks was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis, commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). The condition, characterized by extreme fatigue, cognitive impairment, and physical pain, made it impossible for Nicks to continue performing. At the time, the illness was poorly understood, and for someone as driven and energetic as Nicks, being forced to step away from the stage was devastating.

“My whole life was about performing. And suddenly I couldn’t. I couldn’t even get out of bed some days,” Nicks has said in past interviews. The sudden silence after years of nonstop touring and recording was not only physically disorienting—it was emotionally crushing.

During this period, Nicks was also prescribed Klonopin, a benzodiazepine commonly used to treat anxiety and insomnia. Though the medication was intended to help her cope, she has since revealed it became a significant struggle of its own. The combination of ME/CFS and growing dependence on Klonopin marked what Nicks has described as one of the darkest periods of her life.

“It robbed me of nearly a decade,” she has reflected. “It dulled everything—my creativity, my spirit, even my voice. I wasn’t myself.”

Despite the immense challenges, Nicks found her way back. Her tour resumed in 1988, and though the road to recovery was long, she eventually sought help and overcame her dependence on Klonopin. Reclaiming her health, both physically and emotionally, allowed her to return to the stage with renewed purpose and resilience.

Today, Nicks speaks openly about that difficult era, hoping her story encourages others to take their health seriously and to seek help without shame. Her vulnerability has helped break stigmas around chronic illness and addiction—especially for women in the spotlight.

Reflecting on the suspended tour now, Nicks doesn’t view it as a failure, but as a painful turning point that ultimately strengthened her. “I survived it,” she’s said. “And I came back stronger. That’s what matters.”

Through honesty and endurance, Stevie Nicks continues to inspire, reminding fans that even legends have to pause—and that healing is always possible.
