Travis Fimmel to Star with Wife and Son in Gritty New Sci-Fi Drama: Ashes of Faith

Travis Fimmel is returning to the screen in his most personal and provocative role yet. In the upcoming dystopian sci-fi film Ashes of Faith, the Australian actor stars alongside his real-life wife and son in a harrowing story of survival, belief, and identity set in a fractured world rebuilding from the ashes of religious war.

Directed by visionary filmmaker Maya Renner, Ashes of Faith follows Fimmel as Kael, a battle-scarred atheist soldier with a shadowy past. In the aftermath of a cataclysmic global conflict ignited by religious divisions, Earth has splintered into ideological enclaves—each enforcing strict doctrines over increasingly desperate populations. Kael, disillusioned and emotionally detached, has renounced all faith and belief systems, seeking only to keep his family alive in a world where ideology has become the ultimate weapon.

Fimmel’s wife plays Lira, a former battlefield medic now struggling to preserve a sense of humanity and healing in a brutal new society. Their on-screen—and real-life—son portrays Eli, a boy growing up without gods, nations, or certainty. As Kael’s past comes back to haunt him, the family is thrust into a conflict that will test their bonds and force them to confront the very forces they’ve tried to escape.

“This is not just another dystopian action film,” Renner explained in a press release. “It’s a deeply emotional exploration of what it means to protect your family in a world where belief has been both weapon and casualty.”

Filmed across stark, unforgiving landscapes in Iceland and northern Canada, Ashes of Faith uses practical effects and minimal CGI to craft a visceral, grounded world. The filmmakers emphasize realism and raw human emotion over spectacle, capturing the eerie stillness of a planet left reeling from ideological destruction.

Fimmel, known for intense roles in Vikings and Raised by Wolves, also serves as co-producer and is credited with contributing to the story’s development. His performance, paired with the natural chemistry of his real family, is said to lend the film an authenticity rarely seen in sci-fi cinema.

“There’s something powerful about telling this story as a family,” Fimmel noted in a recent interview. “It’s about survival, yes—but it’s also about trust, grief, and what you choose to believe in when everything else is gone.”

Ashes of Faith is slated for a fall 2026 release and is already generating early buzz as a bold, emotional reinvention of the dystopian genre. With a haunting premise and a deeply human core, it’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated indie films of the year.
