Vikings News: Assistant Coach Leaves for NCAA Position, WR Signs with PS

Clemson has hired Vikings defensive line coach Chris Rumph to coach its defensive ends, the program announced on Monday.

Rumph has been on leave since October, so this won’t make much of a difference for the Vikings. Assistant D-line coach Pat Hill, as well as assistant head coach Mike Pettine and defensive coordinator Brian Flores, have taken up his duties. (Pettine has mostly filled in for OLBs coach Mike Smith, who has been on an unrelated leave of absence since before the start of the regular season).

Rumph was hired by the Vikings in 2022 after spending one season each with the Bears and Texans. Prior to entering the NFL, he worked as an assistant coach at the collegiate level from 2002 to 2019. This includes a five-year career as defensive ends coach at Clemson from 2006 to 2010. Now, 13 years later, he’s back in the same role with the Tigers, who are aiming to rebound from a poor 2023 season.

Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings will be looking for a new defensive line coach this offseason.

Harry signed to PS

The Vikings have added N’Keal Harry to their practice squad. He was released last week to create room on the 53-man roster for Justin Jefferson. This season, Harry has alternated between the active roster and the practice squad, logging 23 offensive snaps and 49 special teams snaps in nine games.
