Everton Fc
What a Manchester United player did against Everton blew me away… and it wasn’t Alejandro Garnacho.
Cristiano Ronaldo against. Juventus, Wayne Rooney vs. Manchester City, Alejandro Garnacho vs. Everton. Manchester United required something special to calm the bear pit atmosphere that greeted them at Goodison Park, but instead of a ‘Welcome to Hell,’ they received a ‘Goal From Heaven.’
Garnacho has always been regarded as a generational talent and one of the most intriguing players to emerge from the club’s famed academy, and it’s easy to see why.
He will aim to accomplish considerably more than he has thus far in the remainder of his bright career, but he will now be eternally connected with what happened in the second minute of Sunday’s match at Goodison Park.
However, the Argentine teenager is not the only United prospect with a promising future at the club. Kobbie Mainoo is arguably more exciting, yet there isn’t much to it.
He was given his first Premier League start for the crucial trip to Everton on Sunday afternoon, and he impressed with a disciplined and well-rounded performance at the base of the United midfield.
If it hadn’t been for a pre-season injury, Mainoo would have made his full league debut much sooner, with Erik ten Hag’s faith in the kid fully vindicated by his mature performance.
The Stockport-born youngster has been compared to Paul Pogba for his intimidating physical attributes and remarkable technical skill, both of which were on display on Sunday afternoon.
Following his strong summer performances, Mainoo continued where he left off, frequently dropping back to collect the ball from Andre Onana as United attempted to play out from the back and displaying tremendous maturity with his serenity in possession.
The teenager rarely appeared overwhelmed against one of the Premier League’s most powerful midfields, and it also spoke a lot that his teammates trusted him enough to pass to him in tight situations, such was their faith that he would make the right decision with the ball.
What makes this exceptional youth so thrilling is not only his frightening ability on the ball, but also his awareness of it. His personal highlight was likely the game reading he displayed when he rushed back to clear a specific goal off the line.
Every positive thing United did had Mainoo in the center of it, whether it was their greatest defensive work, transition play, or even the build-up to the few chances they had to score a goal.
He not only played freely in the midfield, but he was also tactically disciplined and rewarded the trust that his teammates and the coaching staff placed in him.
Even after such a fantastic performance, expectations must be kept in check, but it is evident that Mainoo needs more opportunities in the near future if he is to fulfill his full potential.
Garnacho scored one of the best goals ever seen, and yet Mainoo shone just as brightly.
