He also struggled at the US Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, where he managed to secure just a single match victory before being knocked out.
Since that tournament in Houston, Shelton has found it difficult to build momentum. A string of early eliminations across three consecutive events has highlighted his current struggles, preventing him from gaining the rhythm needed to compete at a higher level.
Despite these setbacks, Shelton has now shifted his focus to Europe, where he is preparing to compete at the Munich Open. The tournament holds some significance for him, as he enjoyed a strong run there last year and will be hoping to replicate that success.
Reflecting on his previous performance in Munich, Shelton reached the final but was ultimately defeated by Alexander Zverev. The loss came in straight sets, with the home favorite proving too strong on the day and denying Shelton the title.
As he prepares for another campaign at the event, Shelton has been open about the areas of his game that need improvement—particularly on clay. Having played only one clay-court tournament so far this season, he admits that his level on the surface still falls short of where it should be.
In a recent interview with Tennis TV, Shelton shared his thoughts on his development. He expressed a sense of optimism, noting that continued exposure to clay courts will help him refine his approach and build confidence in his game.
“I feel good,” Shelton explained. “The more time I spend on this surface, the more I improve. It’s about gaining clarity and really understanding my identity on the court.”
