Viljami Sinisalo has become Celtic’s first summer recruit and the new Bhoy has a huge A-list goalkeeper in his corner.
Brendan Rodgers has shelled out £1million to Aston Villa to bring the Finland international on board. He’s penned a five-year deal and is expected to be joined by Kasper Schmeichel as the Hoops change up their goalkeeping department. The 22-year-old was pictured jetting out to the USA before his official announcement with the Parkhead faithful likely to get a look at the newbie across games with DC United, Manchester City and Chelsea. The goalkeeper himself can’t wait to get started at what he describes as a ‘massive football cub with incredible support and history’ as he bids to follow in the footsteps of the ‘incredible goalkeepers’ Celtic have had in their ranks over the years.
Speaking of incredible goalkeepers, World Cup and Copa American winner Emi Martinez – who is on the books at Sinisalo’s former club – has been in touch to wish him all the best after he posted Instagram following his move to Parkhead. The Argentina No1 posted: “All the best brother” with a red love heart emoji. His message was in response to Sinisalo who wrote: “My time @avfcofficial has come to an end. I came here as a 16 year old boy and will always be grateful for the opportunity that I was given. I have watched an amazing football club develop even further and look forward to watching their success from afar now.
“A club is only as good as the people within it and Aston Villa is full of incredible people who have all helped me on my journey and I want to thank them all. I take huge step on my journey now to a massive football club with incredible support and history. I want to follow in the footsteps of the incredible goalkeepers they have had and play my part in helping them win as many trophies as possible!”
Meanwhile, Paolo Bernardo looks set to follow in the coming days after a successful loan stint from Benfica last season. The original agreement had a £6million buy clause but the Scottish champions have negotiated that down to £3.5million with Abola reporting he will pen a four-year deal in Glasgow on £16k-per-week.
Elsewhere, Al-Ittihad are ‘confident’ of agreeing a deal to sign Moussa Diaby from Aston Villa. It is reported that negotiations between the Saudi Pro League side and the EPL outfit plus the players’ camp are advancing.
Jota left Celtic last summer in a big money move but it has been far from an easy ride. He’s found himself on the outside looking in and has been linked with the exit door on more on one occasion. With the imminent arrival of Diaby to the SPL, could it finally be time for the former Hoops man to move on and get his career back on track? One to keep a watchful eye on.
Ittihad fans are calling for a front three of Jota, Karim Benzema and the incoming Diaby under Laurent Blanc next season.

Celtic are receiving transfer interest in one of their stars.
A former Celtic defender reckons the end of Matt O’Riley’s time in Glasgow is on the horizon.
This week, Serie A duo Atalanta and Juventus have been added to the growing list of suitors, that include Atletico Madrid and Premier League clubs. Atalanta are said to have had a bid rejecting and that has Mark Wilson wondering how high they may go.
With a transfer fee still to shell out for Adam Idah – alongside pursuits of Paulo Bernardo, Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo – Wilson says the Italian side are testing Celtic. He thinks it’s the start of the exit process for O’Riley, who has proven influential since his arrival from MK Dons under Ange Postecoglou.
The ex-defender told Clyde 1: “It looks like the beginning of the end for Matt O’Riley, I think. When you get a serious contender like Atalanta coming in, they finished fourth in Serie A and the starting bid is £15 million, then you know they have a lot in reserve to keep adding to that.
“Of course, they will (put more bids in). If the shoe was on the other foot, look at Celtic with Idah. They offer a low-ball offer. Knowing full well they have to get to x amount to get Idah to come and Atalanta are no different. They will test Celtic with £15 million. There will probably be some add-ons in there. Celtic, obviously, want a bigger price up front, as well as the add-ons, I would imagine.
“I am pretty sure the clubs, before the August transfer window is over, the club will get there. Matt O’Riley has been a fantastic player for Celtic. Fitted the model perfectly. We are buying cheap and selling big. He’s right there. I still think there is scope there to go up dramatically (O’Riley’s price) – I think it will take it closer to £20 million. It will be the beginning of the end.”

Celtic have completed their first summer signing after Finland international goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo joined on a five-year contract from Aston Villa.
The 22-year-old came through the Premier League club’s academy and spent last season on loan at Exeter, where he was named player of the year for the Sky Bet League One side after making 50 first-team appearances across all competitions.
Sinisalo, who previously spent time with Ayr in 2020-21 and featured in a friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park ahead of Euro 2024, flew out with the Scottish champions on Tuesday for their pre-season trip to America.
Sinisalo is is set to provide competition and cover for 37-year-old Kasper Schmeichel, who is expected to arrive in Glasgow later this week as the Hoops look to replace the retired Joe Hart.
Midfielder Matt O’Riley joined his team-mates as they prepared to jet off for friendlies against DC United, Manchester City and Chelsea.
The Denmark international has been the subject of fresh speculation this week amid reported interest from Juventus and Atalanta among others.
Another midfielder, Paulo Bernardo, is expected to link up with Celtic in the United States with the club reported to have agreed a £3.5million fee with Benfica following his loan spell last season.
Elsewhere Southampton have completed the permanent signing of midfielder Flynn Downes from West Ham United on a four-year contract, for a fee believed to be in the region of £18 million.
The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at St Mary’s, playing a pivotal role in the team’s promotion via the Championship play-offs.
He made 37 appearances, scored twice and provided three assists in all competitions.
Leicester have signed Abdul Fatawu on a five-year deal after the Ghana international impressed on loan last season.
The 20-year-old helped the Foxes earn promotion to the Premier League last term, scoring seven goals in 43 appearances while on loan from Sporting Lisbon, and Leicester have triggered an option to make the deal permanent.
Fatawu has 19 caps for his country and played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Burnley have announced the signing of Brazilian defender Lucas Pires on a four-year deal.
The 23-year-old arrives at Turf Moor from Santos for an undisclosed fee to become Burnley’s third signing of the summer.
Pires has played over 70 games for Santos and spent last season on loan at Spanish side Cadiz, where he featured 28 times in La Liga.
Celtic sign Viljami Sinisalo from Aston Villa on five-year deal
Viljami Sinisalo becomes Celtic’s latest signing
Celtic have announced the signing of highly-rated Finnish international goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo from English Premier League side Aston Villa.
The 22-year-old, who is believed to have cost the Scottish Premiership holders around £1million, has put pen to paper on a five-year deal, subject to international clearance.
Speaking to Celtic TV after completing his move, Sinisalo expressed his delight at joining the Hoops.
“I know Celtic is a huge football club and it’s really exciting to be part of something so big. It feels amazing,” Sinisalo said.

Sinisalo came through the youth ranks at Aston Villa and was previously in Scotland for a short spell with Ayr United and then spent last season on loan at English League One club Exeter City, where he was named the team’s Player of the Year after making 50 appearances across all competitions.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was thrilled to secure the services of the talented shot-stopper and bolster his options in goals – with experienced professional, Kasper Schmeichel, also expected to arrive this summer.
“I am delighted to welcome Vil to Celtic,” Rodgers said. “He is a keeper with real qualities and someone we have been aware of and monitored for some time.”
“Clearly we have been looking to develop our goalkeeping team, and we are really pleased to have secured one of the talented keepers we really wanted,” the Celtic boss added.
Sinisalo took to Instagram once the transfer was official and expressed his gratitude at Aston Villa giving him the opportunity to learn his trade the past eight years.
He wrote: “My time at Aston Villa has come to an end. I came here as a 16 year old boy and will always be grateful for the opportunity that I was given.
“I have watched an amazing football club develop even further and look forward to watching their success from afar now.
“A club is only as good as the people within it and Aston Villa is full of incredible people who have all helped me on my journey and I want to thank them all.

Celtic may recruit the £8.5 million star to precisely replace Oh.
Celtic could perfectly replace Oh by signing £8.5m star.
Celtic enjoyed a relatively decent season last time out as Brendan Rodgers lifted two domestic trophies in his first year back in the dugout at Parkhead.
The Northern Irish boss came in to replace Ange Postecoglou, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League, last summer and won the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup.
However, the Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, finishing bottom of their group, and they could be set to aim for more success in Europe to go alongside domestic success next term.
Changes to the squad could help the Scottish giants to push on in the continent and the forward department has already seen some alterations this summer.
Adam Idah spent the second half of last season on loan from Norwich City and the Hoops are reportedly continuing talks to sign him on a permanent deal, having already had an offer of £4m plus add-ons turned down.
The Scottish Premiership champions have also allowed one of their senior strikers from last season to move on this month as Hyeon-gyu Oh was sold to Genk.
Celtic’s Hyeon-gyu Oh masterclass
The Belgian outfit have reportedly paid a fee of £4.5m to sign the South Korea international to bolster their forward line ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
That is £2m more than the £2.5m the Bhoys reportedly paid Suwon Bluewings to bring him to Glasgow in the January transfer window at the start of last year.
Celtic, therefore, played a masterclass with the 23-year-old attacker as they almost doubled their money on him, despite his distinct lack of quality on the pitch during his 18-month spell at Paradise.
Firstly, his finishing during the 2023/24 Premiership campaign left a bit to be desired as he plundered five goals from 6.35 xG, an underperformance of 1.35.

As you can see in the table above, only four Celtic players underperformed their expected tally by more than the South Korean dud, who was behind Kyogo Furuhashi and Idah in the pecking order in his final few months at the club.
The biggest issue for Oh was that he did not offer much outside of scoring goals and that meant that his wasteful finishing made him a liability for the side.
In the Premiership last season, the right-footed marksman failed to create a single ‘big chance’, did not register any assists, and only made 0.3 key passes per game across 20 appearances, which shows that he offered very little, if anything at all, as a creative threat.
Oh also lost 58% of his ground duels and 60% of his battles in the air in those 20 league outings, which shows that opposition defenders got the better of him in physical contests more often than not.
Taking these statistics into account, Celtic played a blinder to make a £2m profit on him as his performances on the pitch did not suggest that he was worth more than they paid for him, as the forward struggled physically and technically.
Rodgers could, now, perfectly replace the £4.5m sale by dipping into the market to sign one of the club’s reported targets before the end of the summer transfer window.
Celtic’s interest in Danish sensation
The Scottish giants reportedly have a long-standing interest in Brondby centre-forward Mathias Kvistgaarden, and they already know how much he would cost.
Back in June, Austrian outlet VICTAURI, as relayed by the Daily Record, claimed that the Hoops target had a price tag of €10m (£8.4m) this summer.
The report stated that RB Salzburg are also eyeing up a possible move for the Danish sensation and that they had already sent scouts to watch him in action.
However, the Bundesliga side were not willing to pay the £8.5m transfer fee required for him at the time, which meant that they did not press ahead with a deal for his services.
This means that the door could still be open for the Hoops to swoop in to bring him to Parkhead as the dream replacement for Oh in Glasgow next season.
Why Mathias Kvistgaarden would perfectly replace Oh
Being a back-up striker option, at least initially, is a hard sell for players and a difficult position for Celtic to fill, particularly if they also sign Idah from Norwich to join Kyogo in the striker ranks at Parkhead.
However, it could be sold to Kvistgaarden as an opportunity for him to prove himself and potentially earn a move to a major league in Europe, whilst winning trophies and playing European football.
At the age of 22, he is younger than Oh and seven years younger than Kyogo, which means that the talented gem could come in as the long-term heir to the Japan international.
This suggests that Kvistgaarden would be perfect for the role that the South Korean dud vacated as a young back-up striker with the potential to emerge as a key figure for Rodgers in the future.
His statistics for Brondby in the Danish Superliga also suggest that he could come in as a big upgrade on Oh, in terms of what he offers on and off the ball, as he enjoyed what talent scout Jacek Kulig described as a “superb season”.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old sensation offered more to his team as both a scorer and a creator of goals, whilst also winning a higher percentage of his duels.
This suggests that Kvistgaarden, who racked up 31 goals and 11 assists in 45 games for Brondby’s U19s, could provide a greater threat at the top end of the pitch for Celtic, in comparison to Oh.
Therefore, the Danish marksman could perfectly replace the new Genk signing due to his age profile, potential, and quality that he could immediately bring to the team.

Celtic new signing in place, Hearts deal, £1.5m move done, ex-Barcelona kid jets in – Scottish transfers
It’s been a busy day of transfer activity across Scottish football – here are the main headlines:
New Celtic man in place
Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo has joined Celtic for their pre-season trip to the United States after he was spotted at Glasgow Airport in club training apparel. The 22-year-old will join from Aston Villa and is expected to compete with Kasper Schmeichel for the No 1 position should, as expected, the Dane complete his move in the coming days. Celtic are also hopeful of completing a permanent deal for Paulo Bernardo, who was on loan from Benfica last season, while they are also hoping to land Adam Idah from Norwich City.
French club lands Bair
Motherwell striker Theo Bair has completed his move newly-promoted French Ligue 1 side Auxerre, with the Steelmen expected to pocket a fee in the region of £1.5million for the Canada internationalist. “My time at the club has been unbelievable,” Bair said on the Motherwell website. “These have been some of the most enjoyable moments of my career. I love this club and I will always be a supporter. I wish everyone nothing but the best!”
Babunski arrives at Dundee United
Former Barcelona youngster David Babunski has signed for Dundee United, the Tannadice club has announced. North Macedonia internationalist Babunski joins from Hungarian second-tier side Mezőkövesdi Sport Egyesület and joins compatriot Kristijan Trapanovski at the club. He has been capped 15 times for his country and plays as a midfielder. Babunski came through the La Masia youth academy at Barcelona and also played for Yokohama F Marinos under Ange Postecoglou. He could make his debut on Tuesday night in the Premier Sports Cup against Stenhousemuir.
Cochrane completes Hearts move
Alex Cochrane has completed his transfer from Hearts to Birmingham. The left-back has joined the Sky Bet League One side on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee which is reported to be worth more than £1million. Cochrane told his new club’s website: “It came about quite quickly, but I felt like it was too good an opportunity to pass on. The ambition of the club is really exciting, especially for a young player like me who wants to go as far as I can in football.” Hearts head coach Steven Naismith told his club’s website: “Alex has done really well for us since joining three years ago, and we’ve been really good for Alex so it’s no surprise that there was interest in him. He leaves with our best wishes.”
Iacovitti joins St Mirren
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson hailed the experience and balance that new signing Alex Iacovitti will bring to his squad. The left-sided central defender has signed a two-year contract after joining from Port Vale for an undisclosed fee. Robinson told the club’s official website: “Alex comes with SPFL experience which is vital to us at the moment. We’re still a young squad with some new players that haven’t played at this level. Alex has that experience. He gives us natural balance on the left-hand side of the pitch and it means we have two left-footed defenders and two right-footed defenders. It gives us great balance in the squad.
Kerr says goodbye
An emotional Cammy Kerr has done the “hardest thing” he will do in his career and left Dundee following a 20-year stay at his boyhood heroes. The defender signed a two-year contract in May 2023 and had a testimonial game in November but was loaned out to Inverness in January. The 28-year-old made 272 appearances for the club. Kerr said in a video posted on Dundee’s X account: “I’d just like to thank everyone at Dundee for an amazing time, an unforgettable time. “It’s been something that’s been part of my life since I was five years of age. Growing up, all I wanted to do was play for Dundee. I’ve been incredibly lucky to get to do that for so long. I am probably a bit emotional speaking about it because it’s been such a constant in my life. When something has been such a big part of your life for so long, it’s difficult to say goodbye.”
Report: Midfielder now has a £25m price tag after being linked with Spurs in May
According to Football Insider, Celtic want a club-record fee for midfielder Matt O’Riley, who was mooted as a target for Tottenham earlier this summer.
Postecoglou coached Matt O’Riley at Celtic
Ange Postecoglou knows O’Riley well, having taken him from MK Dons to Celtic back in January of 2022.
The Denmark international has gone from strength to strength in his two-and-a-half years at Parkhead and he is thought to be on the radar of several sides across Europe.
It was reported by GiveMeSport back in May that Postecoglou could reunite with the 23-year-old at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the outlet also crediting West Ham with interest in the player.
Last week, Football Scotland reported that Atalanta had submitted an offer of £15m for O’Riley, which was swiftly turned down by Celtic.
Second-offer expected for Matt O’Riley
Football Insider have now revealed that the Italian side are ready to step up their pursuit of the midfielder and are set to return with a second bid.
It is explained that Celtic’s previous record sale is the £25m Al-Ittihad paid for Jota last year, with the Scottish giants wanting a bigger fee for O’Riley.
The publication adds that Leicester are also interested in the Dane but with Champions League clubs vying for the player, the Foxes’ chances of landing him appear slim.
Spurs Web Opinion
The O’Riley to Spurs links earlier this summer seemed to be purely down to the Postecoglou factor.
There is very little evidence to suggest that Tottenham are seriously considering a move for the Celtic star.

Major Celtic transfer update as target ‘leaves pre-season camp’
Paulo Bernardo has reportedly left Benfica pre-season training (Image: PA)
Paulo Bernardo has reportedly left the Benfica pre-season training camp amid transfer discussions with Celtic.
The midfielder, 22, spent last season on loan in Glasgow with the Parkhead club holding an option to sign him on a permanent basis.
However, it’s thought Celtic are keen to negotiate a lower fee for Bernardo than the £6m figure included in the loan deal.
Now, in a major development, it has emerged Bernardo will leave Benfica pre-season training as talks over his future continue.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo claim the player is leaving the Benfica campus after not being involved in the friendly against Spanish side Celta Vigo on Saturday.
It’s reported Celtic remain in talks with Benfica to try and agree a fee for Bernardo with Brendan Rodgers keen to bring the player back to Scotland this summer.
Previously discussing transfer interest in former loan pair Bernardo and Adam Idah, Celtic assistant John Kennedy said: “Again, I think there are a lot of conversations happening. It’s a time when a lot of players have been on holiday and different things have been happening.
“A lot of conversations are taking place and as we now come back for pre-season, hopefully in the coming weeks a few things will start to happen, but there are a lot of plates spinning, a lot of work getting done and hopefully we’ll start to see all that start to materialise in the coming weeks.”
On transfer business this summer, Rodgers said: “Would we like to get some in before America? That’s the plan.
“I think every manager would like them in on the first day but what’s most important is the players we want are targeted.”
Celtic make breakthrough and agree deal for 22 y/o with “great attitude”
Celtic are believed to have agreed a deal to sign a 22-year-old player with a “great attitude”, according to a new update from Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph.
Celtic transfer news
It has to be a slow start to the summer at Parkhead when it comes to transfers, but reinforcements should come in over the next few weeks or even days. In goal, Kasper Schmeichel is on the verge of moving to the Hoops, replacing the similarly experienced Joe Hart following his retirement at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
Meanwhile, Royal Antwerp forward Michel-Ange Balikwisha has emerged as another target, with talks taking place with the 23-year-old’s agent over a move. He scored seven goals and registered five assists in the Jupiler Pro League, showing the type of end product he could bring to Brendan Rodgers‘ squad.
Another report has suggested that Aston Villa goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo is another option to come in as Schmeichel’s deputy, as he potentially looks for a chance to enjoy more regular football away from Villa Park.
Talks are also ongoing regarding a permanent move for striker Adam Idah, with the Norwich City man scoring eight goals in 15 appearances in the Scottish Premiership in 2023/24 on loan at Celtic, of which only five were starts. Now, another similar rumour has emerged over the signing of another player.
Celtic agree £3.5m deal to sign player with “great attitude”
Taking to X, Joseph claimed that Celtic have agreed a £3.5m deal with Benfica to sign Paulo Bernardo on a permanent deal, with personal terms hopefully sorted in the near future:
This is brilliant news for Celtic, considering what a popular figure Bernardo proved to be during his temporary stint at Parkhead last season. He made 22 appearances in the league, scoring and assisting three times apiece, and he also averaged 1.3 tackles per game in the competition. Meanwhile, Rodgers has shown his admiration for him in the past, saying:
“For Paulo it was good. He’s such a mature player for a young player. He’s always had a great attitude at training. He’s played in a lot of big games. But he had a wee bit of everything today – he had a wee bit of dig, put his foot in, passed the ball and made runs into the box.”
Celtic Open Talks to Sign Michel-Ange Balikwisha
Celtic are in talks to sign winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha from Royal Antwerp.
Balikwisha’s impressive season in Belgium last year has grabbed the Scottish outfit’s attention.
Celtic are also close to signing goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as a replacement for Joe Hart.
Celtic have entered discussions with Royal Antwerp winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha’s representatives over a potential deal, according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, with three more deals already close.
Balikwisha impressed last season with Antwerp, netting five goals and registering five assists in 23 appearances in the Belgian Pro-League. This form has prompted interest from around Europe, with Celtic reportedly leading the race to land the player’s signature.
The Scottish side have identified the forward as an option to provide Brendan Rodgers with additional quality and depth, and are prepared to step up their efforts to complete a deal. The 23-year-old’s entourage have engaged in an initial round of talks regarding a deal, with further progress expected to be made this week.
Celtic Eyeing Balikwisha
The attacker has two years remaining on his deal
Bursting onto the scene with Standard Leige in the 2020/21 season, having scored nine league goals at the age of just 19, Balikwisha was scouted by a number of English clubs, with West Bromwich Albion reportedly rivaling Brighton for his signature at the time. However, the Belgium under-21 international instead opted to remain on home soil, completing a move to Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2021.
Helping the Reds to a domestic double and first league title in 66 years in 2022/23, Balikwisha has developed impressively in Antwerp, scoring 25 goals in 125 appearances for the club. Described as ‘cheap but good’ by twitter account Gooral, the forward is renowned for his passing ability, carrying ability and eye for goal.
These attributes have caught the attention of Celtic, who have opened negotiations with the player’s representatives. Writing on X, Belgian reporter Tavolieri confirmed the Scottish giants’ interest:
Celtic are in the market for an attacking player who can provide output in the final third. Starman Matt O’Riley, who scored 18 goals and registered 13 assists from midfield last season, has been the subject of a £17 million offer from Southampton. Although the offer was ultimately rejected, the Dane is expected to leave Celtic park this summer, with several suitors lining up, thus the Bhoys are looking for replacements.

Celtic Close to Schmeichel
The Danish keeper will replace Hart
With Joe Hart retiring from football this summer, another issue on the agenda for Rodgers to address this summer is finding a replacement for the veteran shot-stopper. This problem may be close to being solved, with Celtic reportedly ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign Kasper Schmeichel on a free transfer.
The former Leicester City man is available after his contract with Anderlecht expired, and Rodgers is keen on reuniting with the goalkeeper. Negotiations with the player and his representatives have commenced, and a deal is expected to be agreed in the coming days. The 37-year-old Dane made 31 league appearances for Anderlecht last season, managing eight clean sheets.
Contact made: Celtic set for talks to sign “high level” Maeda upgrade
The Scottish Premiership season is only a matter of weeks away from kicking off and Celtic are preparing to host Kilmarnock at Parkhead on the opening day.
Brendan Rodgers is looking to win the top-flight title for the second year in succession, and what would be the fourth year of dominance for the club.
The Northern Irish head coach won the Premiership title and the SFA Cup in his first season back at Parkhead last year, after replacing Ange Postecoglou in the dugout.
Rodgers now has over a month to go in the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business last month, to make additions to his side to kick on and win more silverware in the 2024/25 campaign.
Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is reportedly set to join on a free transfer, having left Anderlecht, to become the new number one, following Joe Hart’s retirement at the end of last term.
The Scottish giants are also looking to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch, though, and are reportedly keen to add a new winger to the group.
Celtic’s pursuit of electric winger
According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Premiership champions are interested in a summer swoop to sign Royal Antwerp FC attacker Michel-Ange Balikwisha.
The reporter claims that the Hoops have already made contact with the player’s representatives to discuss a possible deal to bring the winger to Glasgow before the window slams shut at the end of August.
He adds that the two clubs are expected to enter into talks to negotiate a transfer fee for the young forward, which suggests that their conversations with his agents went well and that they have been encouraged to speak with Antwerp.
Tavolieri does not, however, reveal how much the Pro League side would want in order to let go of the 23-year-old wizard ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
The journalist also does not state whether or not there are other clubs interested in signing the right-footed talent, which means that it remains to be seen how difficult this potential deal could be for the Hoops.
However, this news that Celtic are set for talks with Antwerp suggests that the club have a serious interest in the forward and that they are now prepared to formalise it with an approach, and possible bid, in an attempt to bring him to Scotland.
If the Hoops can get a deal over the line for Balikwisha then they could land an exciting upgrade on current Bhoys left winger Daizen Maeda.
Why Celtic need a Daizen Maeda upgrade
The Japan international does bring positive qualities to the pitch with his outstanding work ethic in and out of possession for the Scottish giants.
Rodgers said that his presence on the pitch is akin to having “two players” due to his fantastic work rate, and he made 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game to win possession back for his side in the Premiership last term to back up that claim.
However, he is an attacking player and operates down the left flank for Celtic and that means that the Japanese forward must offer a big threat in the final third to go alongside his superb defensive work.
Unfortunately, Maeda struggles at the top end of the pitch and that is evident in his statistics from the Premiership and the Champions League during the 2023/24 campaign.
The 26-year-old attacker only managed six goals and four assists in 32 appearances across those two competitions for the Hoops under Rodgers.

As you can see in the table above, he offered a very average threat as a scorer and provided very little from a creative perspective, with a key pass every other game across those 32 matches.
In the Premiership, Maeda scored six goals from 8.78 xG and only Kyogo Furuhashi (-4.39) underperformed his expected tally by more than him within the Celtic squad, which illustrates how wasteful he was in front of goal.
Rodgers could now land an upgrade on the Japanese winger by swooping to sign a player who works hard defensively whilst offering more as a scorer and a creator on the flank.
Why Michel-Ange Balikwisha is a Daizen Maeda upgrade
Firstly, the 23-year-old ace is a right-footed left winger and this means that he can play in the role that Maeda currently occupies for the Scottish giants.
Secondly, Balikwisha has the defensive work rate and nous to replace the work the current Hoops forward provides, based on his statistics in the Pro League last season.
He ranked within the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the division for both tackles (2.83) and interceptions (1.06) per 90, whilst the talented youngster also ranked within the top 28% for blocks (1.21) per 90.
This shows that the Antwerp wizard is a hard-working forward who does not shirk his defensive responsibilities out wide and is willing to put the hard yards in to either press high to win possession back or to drop in and help his full-back out, like Maeda.

As you can see in the table above, Balikwisha is also a threat at the top end of the pitch with his ability to score and create goals from a left wing position.
He outperformed his xG in the Pro League for Antwerp, whilst Maeda underperformed his, and made three times as many key passes per game in comparison to the Hoops speedster.
These statistics suggest that Balikwisha, who was hailed as a “high level” dribbler by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could provide more to Rodgers at the top end of the pitch as he is the superior finisher of the two and significantly more creative, whilst still offering defensive quality.
Celtic wanted to sign ‘outstanding’ Liverpool player ahead of Kasper Schmeichel, a future move is still on the cards
HITC understands that Celtic’s preference this summer was to sign Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher before settling on a move for Kasper Schmeichel.
The Glasgow giants are closing in on a deal with former Leicester shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel.
The Dane is available on a free transfer after leaving Belgian side Anderlecht at the end of last season.
Celtic were forced to dip into the transfer market to sign a goalkeeper after being left short in that department because of Joe Hart’s retirement.
HITC understands that Celtic have also got a £1million deal in place for Aston Villa keeper Viljami Sinisalo, who is set to become the club’s second-choice.
Schmeichel is set to replace Hart as the first-choice goalkeeper at Parkhead and it is understood that the 37-year-old has been offered a one-year contract with an option for an additional year.
READ MORE: Contract details revealed as Kasper Schmeichel inches closer to Celtic move
However, Schmeichel was not Celtic’s top-choice goalkeeper target this summer.
Celtic wanted Caoimhin Kelleher ahead of Kasper Schmeichel
HITC understands that Celtic’s preference was to sign Caoimhin Kelleher this summer but the deal was complicated by Liverpool‘s stance.
The Reds are not in a position to let Kelleher leave without sourcing a back-up option or a replacement.
In contrast, Celtic needed a new goalkeeper urgently after Hart’s retirement announcement, so the Scottish club moved on to Schmeichel.
Sources have told HITC that a future move for the Liverpool shot-stopper has not been ruled out.
Kelleher is admired at Anfield, especially by former manager Jurgen Klopp who described him as an “outstanding” player.
Celtic need a long-term goalkeeper option
Schmeichel’s signing is a good one – he demanded no big fee and will bring plenty of leadership and experience to Celtic Park.
However, he is in the twilight years of his career and it will not be long until he follows Hart into retirement.
Sinisalo is a good young option for a number-two at Celtic but he has hardly proven that he can step up to replace Schmeichel.
A new long-term goalkeeper is still needed at Celtic and a return for Kelleher’s signature should not be ruled out.
Matt O’Riley travels on Celtic US tour despite transfer speculation
Matt O’Riley has a huge decision to make
Speculation continues to ramp up around Matt O’Riley’s Celtic future – with Atalanta and Juventus among the clubs battling for his signature.
Some reports in Italy even claim the Hoops midfielder has already verbally expressed his desire to leave Scottish football this summer and that further bids have been tabled.
Despite that, O’Riley has travelled with his Celtic teammates on their flight over to the United States, where they are set to face Chelsea, Manchester City and DC United in a glamour pre-season tour.
Brendan Rodgers will be hoping the 23-year-old can put any transfer talk on the back burner for now until any official agreement is made.
There is also a new face among the Celtic contingent heading across the Atlantic. Goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo is set to be officially announced as the latest signing after sealing a £1million switch from Aston Villa.
Sinisalo shined on-loan at Exeter City last season and previously had a productive spell in Scotland with Ayr United.
He will now compete along side Scott Bain, Benjamin Siegrist and Tobi Oluwayemni in Celtic’s goalkeeping department – with the impetus still on finding the perfect successor for Joe Hart, who hung up his gloves following last season’s Double-winning campaign.
The Celtic squad also welcomed back several key players who had represented their national teams at the recent Euro 2024 tournament. This included Scottish internationals Callum McGregor, James Forrest, Greg Taylor, and Anthony Ralston.
Additionally, the team was boosted by the return of Japanese duo Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda. These individuals had been given additional time off following their international duties and were now rejoining the Celtic squad after missing the previous exhibition matches against Ayr United and Queen’s Park this month.
There was space for Gustaf Lagerbielke and Mikey Johnston, even though their long-term futures remain unclear. While the £3.5million acquisition of Paulo Bernardo from Benfica appears to be edging closer.
Paulo Bernardo close to joining Celtic
Celtic are working on several deals at the moment as Brendan Rodgers is looking to add more quality to his side.
According to a report from Sky Sports, the Hoops are close to completing the signing of Portuguese midfielder Paulo Bernardo.
Celtic have agreed an initial fee of £3.5 million with Benfica for the signing of Bernando.
The midfielder, who joined on loan last season at Celtic Park, is keen to join Celtic, but add-ons to the deal and personal terms with the 22-year-old are still to be agreed.
Last season, he made 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals for the Bhoys. It was a successful loan spell for Bernardo who returned to Lisbon with the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup winners medal.
While he was not a regular starter at the club last season, clearly he did enough to impress Celtic to sign him permanently. He performed extremely well for the Bhoys when Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor were out injured.
There was an option to convert the loan deal into a permanent one by paying £6 million, and Benfica were initially sticking to that figure. However, it appears they have decided to let him go for almost half the fee.
According to a report from the Daily Record, Bernando is now expected to negotiate personal terms and sign a long-term contract at Parkhead, which will last until 2028.
Bernando will jet out with the rest of the Celtic squad for the pre-season tour of the USA, where they will face teams such as Manchester City, DC United and Chelsea.
While Celtic are close to landing one midfielder, doubts remain over the long-term future of Matt O’Riley, who is being chased by Atalanta and Juventus.
It has been reported that Atalanta are preparing a third bid to sign the Dane midfielder, who has given the green light for transfer.

The Belgian youngster has been heavily linked with a move to Celtic this summer
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to bolster his team’s attacker options this summer as the Hoops aim to defend their Scottish Premiership title for a fourth consecutive season.
As it stands, Norwich City star Adam Idah remains the team’s first choice option after a hugely successful loan spell at the end of last season. However, another name that he entered the fray in recent weeks has been Royal Antwerp forward Michel-Ange Balikwisha, according to reports from journalist Sacha Tavloreri.

The youngster is understood to be the type of profile that Rodgers is after this summer and it is expected that talks over a potential deal will begin this week.
But who is Michel-Ange Balikwisha and what can Celtic fans expect from him if he is to arrive in Glasgow this summer. Here’s all you need to know.
Who is Michel-Ange Balikwisha?
Michel-Ange Balikwisha is a 23-year-old Belgian forward of Congolese descent. He played for Anderlecht’s youth team as a youngster before joining Standard Liege at the age of 13.
He rose to prominence as a first team regular at The Stade Maurice Dufrasne in the 2020/21 campaign and scored nine goals in 32 matches as his side finished sixth in the Belgian Pro League whilst also reaching a domestic cup final.
Balikwisha was a standout performer for Liege in his debut campaign to the league’s oldest club Royal Antwerp for an undisclosed fee. The youngster quickly settled into his new surroundings and in just his second season was a key member of the team which won a league and cup double, including the club’s first league title for 66 years.
Overall, he boasts a record of 18 goals and nine assists in 98 matches while mainly playing as left winger. He also scored two in seven Champions League matches last term and was part of a team which stunned Barcelona with a 3-2 home victory.
His form has earned him constant recognition at U21 level for Belgium but he is yet to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils.
Balikwisha is a winger that is renowned for his excellent sprint speed, agility, balance and ability to take on defenders with ease. He is a player that is capable of using both feet comfortably and can be deployed either as a left winger, right winger or even as a centre forward.
He is regarded as a crucial player in Mark van Bommel’s team and is currently contracted until 2026. The Celtic Star understands that he is valued at around £6m.
Celtic hero sees Parkhead star’s beginning of the end as £15m leaves him with unflinching transfer exit hunch
What Gary Caldwell said about new Celtic recruit Viljami Sinisalo whilst on loan at Exeter City
It looks like Brendan Rodgers has now started to get the wheels in motion after new Celtic signing, Viljami Sinisalo was spotted boarding an aeroplane to head to the USA this afternoon.
At the time of writing, Sinisalo is yet to be announced officially by Celtic but as we discussed earlier, the Finnish international was pictured boarding a flight to the US with the rest of the Hoops squad.
And as the Celtic fans cannot wait to see the 22-year-old in action for the first time, what can they expect from the new addition to the team?
To give an insight, here is what former Celtic defender, Gary Caldwell, said about Sinisalo as he managed the youngster through his loan spell at Exeter City last season.
Caldwell predicts an ‘incredible career’ for new Bhoy
After signing up with the League One outfit on loan, Caldwell immediately praised Sinisalo for his professionalism and pointed out that he is set to have a great career ahead of him.
Caldwell said [Exeter City], “He comes with experience of league football at this level, as well as in Scotland and Finland, and he’s played for his national team, so we are really excited to have him.
“He’s ready, he’s trained and he’s up to speed and he already has a feel for the club. He turned up at half-five at a gym at Newton Abbot and he was the first one there, after cancelling his holiday.
“I think that tells you everything you need to know about Vil, and I’m sure he’ll go on to have an incredible career.”
Clearly eager to impress, it seems Sinisalo’s hard work paid off as he made 50 appearances for the League One side that season.
Sinisalo’s ‘outstanding’ close season verdict
When Caldwell announced his player retention list for Exeter at the end of last season, he hailed the young Finnish ‘keeper for his ‘outstanding’ form as he kept a ‘great signing’ out of the team.
Caldwell said, “Gary [Woods] was a great signing at the time as we needed cover and someone to push Jamal Blackman.
“He did that and got into the team and had some really good moments.
“This year he faced real competition from Vil Sinisalo who was outstanding, but Gary was always there to support Vil and was great for Shaun MacDonald and Harry Lee and he was a great character in the dressing room.”
So it seems that Celtic are getting an incredibly hardworking goalkeeper who is eager to learn and who also gained the respect of his former teammates during his time on loan.
Sinisalo kept 14 clean sheets whilst on loan at Exeter and for £1m, it seems that Celtic are getting not only a bargain but a top professional at such a young age to boot.
The fans will be eager to see how he fits into the Celtic team but after these comments from Caldwell, it seems that slotting into this current Hoops team won’t be a problem for this youngster.
Celtic Closing in on Triple Transfer Deal
HIGHLIGHTS
Celtic are set to confirm the triple signing, of Kasper Schmeichel, Paulo Bernardo and Viljami Sinisalo to revitalise their squad.
Bernardo is set to make a permanent move, providing continued midfield stability.
Schmeichel’s mentorship of Sinisalo is expected to enhance goalkeeping strength.
Celtic’s transfer window is set to burst into life in the coming days, according to reports – with a triple signing set to walk through the doors at Parkhead to kickstart their campaign. The Hoops have had a summer of sales so far, with Sead Haksabanovic, Rocco Vata and Oh Hyeon-gyu all departing the club for fees, whilst Marco Tilio has left the club for his native Australia on loan and Joe Hart has retired.
Numbers are needed and fans continue to lap up the transfer mill – and all of their hopes have come at once, it seems – with Sky Sports reporting that a triple transfer including Leicester City veteran Kasper Schmeichel is set to be confirmed in the coming days.
Celtic ‘Set’ to Make Triple Signing
It’s three through the door for Brendan Rodgers
The report from Sky states that Celtic have agreed an initial fee of £3.5million with Benfica, in order to turn Bernardo’s loan spell into a permanent deal after an impressive loan spell under Brendan Rodgers last year.
There are add-ons to the deal that still need to be agreed alongside personal terms with the player, but the 22-year-old is thought to be keen on a move back to Celtic Park after the club completed a domestic double last season, including a third-straight Scottish Premiership title.

Alongside the return of the Portuguese star, Celtic are aiming to replace the retired Hart with a double goalkeeper swoop – and that will see Rodgers’ former Leicester star Schmeichel come into the club alongside Aston Villa youngster Viljami Sinisalo.
The young Finland stopper has spent time on loan at Ayr United, Burton Albion and Exeter City in recent years, and after impressing for the Grecians with their Player of the Year award, earned his first Finland call-up. It’s seen huge interest in his services, and coming back to a Villa team that boasts Emiliano Martinez in their ranks, Sinisalo likely won’t garner game time in the West Midlands.
He will learn from Schmeichel, who is set to join on a one-year contract with a club option to extend that for another year next summer. His medical was delayed but is thought to be taking place on Tuesday, before meeting up with Celtic’s squad in the USA for pre-season later in the week once he has signed.
Continuity is Key for Celtic
There is a lot to be said for stability
The key here for Celtic and Rodgers is continuity. Bernardo represents a strong option and with the club’s playing squad already knowing how he operates after spending last season on loan at Celtic Park, there will be no teething period for the young midfield as he joins up alongside the likes of Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley in the centre of the park.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Hart made 153 appearances for Celtic, with seven trophies to boot – meaning he picked up a medal for every 22 games he featured in.
It’s a similar scenario with Schmeichel, too. Hart came to Celtic three years ago with question marks surrounding his future in football after falling out of first-team football in the latter stages of his career – but he turned that negativity into a superb end to his playing career, winning seven domestic trophies from a possible nine with fans adoring him.
Schmeichel could offer similar despite his career beginning to wind down, and having not had a young goalkeeper for Hart to pass on his expertise to, Sinisalo will benefit massively from Schmeichel’s Premier League-winning experience.
Refusal to be ‘intimidated’ by Celtic transfer drama – ‘Embittered’ response just increases desire for Rodgers’ player
On Monday, we covered claims from Italy that Juventus were trying to cause trouble for Atalanta in their pursuit of Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.
The Turin club had grown frustrated with La Dea continually demanding €60m for Teun Koopmeiners, and refusing to come down from that level.
Therefore, they decided they’d make an attempt to get O’Riley from Celtic themselves. Atalanta had seen him as a replacement for Koopmeiners, so Juve just thought they’d try and cause some trouble.
They were said to have contacted both Celtic and O’Riley’s camp, yet their tactics were transparent from the off and Atalanta aren’t collapsing.
Calciomercato report Atalanta ‘have not been intimidated’ by Juve’s efforts. Indeed, the Turin club are described as ’embittered’ and there’s now just greater desire to get O’Riley from Celtic, whilst still staying strong over Koopmeiners.
Brendan Rodgers’ player is called a ‘breakthrough star’ and there’s a belief an effort would be made even if Koopmeiners stays where he is.
O’Riley’s Celtic days look numbered, with Atalanta still looking the likeliest destination.
Celtic make summer transfer decision on Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tom Glover
Celtic have made a transfer decision regarding the potential signing of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tom Glover.
Middlesbrough have already parted ways with a number of first-team players in the 2024 summer transfer window.
Paddy McNair and Liam Roberts left the club when their contracts expired back in June.
Hayden Coulson was then sold to Blackpool, while Sammy Silvera has joined Portsmouth on loan for the 2024/25 season.
The outgoings at the Riverside Stadium may not stop there, though, as several players could still leave Middlesbrough in 2024.
Middlesbrough have made Anfernee Dijksteel available for sale, while Dan Barlaser has received transfer interest from a European side.
READ MORE: Middlesbrough FLOP who is now a free agent wanted by three Premier League clubs
Celtic decide against Tom Glover transfer
Another player who has attracted transfer interest in the current window is goalkeeper Tom Glover.
Glover signed for Middlesbrough on a free transfer last summer and spent 2023/24 as backup to Seny Dieng.
Scottish powerhouse Celtic were understood to be interested in the keeper but a fresh report from the Northern Echo suggests they are no longer looking to sign the Australian.
They report that Brendan Rodgers’ main priority this summer was a replacement for Joe Hart and Glover was one of the names being looked at.
However, the Hoops’ search for a Hart replacement is now expected to conclude with the capture of Kasper Schmeichel on a free transfer.
Should Middlesbrough sell Glover
Glover did not have the most prolific first year in England but was previously dubbed ‘fantastic’ by Melbourne City coach Rado Vidosic, as per A-League.
However, it may be best for all parties if Middlesbrough look to move the 26-year-old on this summer.
Zach Hemming and Sol Brynn have returned to Boro after loan spells in 2023/24, highlighting the key transfer issue Carrick is now facing.
Dieng, Glover, Hemming, and Brynn are all competing to be first and second choice options in 2024/25.
This is simply too many players for two positions and at least one of them should be sold in the current window.
Glover was an adequate number two last term but as Middlesbrough signed him for free 12 months ago, his sale in 2024 would allow the club to make a quick profit.
It would also open the door for former academy star Hemming to gain more experience after he shone at St Mirren.
