Celtic have the chance to bring in some more players over the coming weeks

Brondby Director of Football Carsten V. Jensen has admitted Celtic-linked Mathias Kvitgaarden could be sold this summer, but not on the cheap. The Danish Superliga side are facing a battle to keep hold of the attacker in this window amid interest from elsewhere.

The Hoops have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old ahead of next season. They won the Scottish Premiership again in the last campaign ahead of rivals Rangers and will be looking to do the same again next time around.

Celtic could see Kvitgaarden as someone to bolster their attacking department. However, RB Salzburg have also been mentioned as a potential suitors and could provide competition in this particular pursuit.

Brondby chief Jensen has shared this update on the player’s situation in an interview with Viaplay: “It goes without saying that there is interest when we have a team with such talented players. As I said, we now have a strength in that we can keep the group together and are not forced to sell – and not for a pittance at all.”

Kvitgaarden spoke to Danish news outlet Campo earlier this summer and told of his ambition to better himself: “I think I have shown myself in a lot of ways, which means that I have shown that I can hopefully also play internationally at some point. I am a soccer player. I meet here around 8:30. So I’m hired to play soccer. And then there are a lot of others who are employed to do what they are employed to do.”

The Denmark youth international is still waiting to play for their senior team. They reached Euro 2024 but were knocked out by the hosts Germany in the Round of 16, with Celtic new boy Kasper Schmeichel playing between the sticks.

Kvitgaarden played for Skjold Birkerød and Lyngby before joining Brondby in 2015. He has since risen up through the ranks of his current team and broke into their senior set-up in 2020.

The forward has since made 83 appearances in all competitions and has fired 23 goals, nine of which came last term. His contract expires in 2027 meaning Brondby are under no pressure to cash in on him just yet and can wait for the right offer to come in.

Celtic may have to fork out a decent sized transfer fee if they are to win the race for his signature. Time will tell whether they pursue a deal for him or look elsewhere for targets.

O’Riley is highly regarded by the Atalanta management and wanted as a replacement for the outgoing Teun Koopmeiners, but they will no have to decide if they want to up their bid and potentially getting into a bidding war with the English side.

Other clubs such as Tottenham, West Ham, Leicester and Juventus have been linked with the 23-year-old, while Atletico Madrid made a move back in January and could yet return on the scene.

Brendan Rodgers has insisted he is “relaxed” despite transfer interest in Matt O’Riley this summer.

The Celtic midfielder, 23, is wanted by Atalanta with one transfer offer reportedly rejected by Parkhead chiefs this summer.

There is an expectation the Serie A club could return to the table with an improved offer but reports suggest Celtic chiefs will stand firm on their valuation.

O’Riley is a key player at Celtic and scored a double in the pre-season win over DC United. And Rodgers insists “first-class professional” O’Riley won’t be distracted by transfer speculation.

The Celtic manager added that Celtic are a “very difficult club to leave” as he responded to interest O’Riley with a firm take on the situation.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Rodgers said: “Celtic is a club where you can move on but you don’t have to and it’s a very difficult club to move on from.

Taylor has picked up nine honour since signing for Celtic and has proven to be an inspired signing after racking up more than 170 appearances. He claims he is working to improve constantly and believes that the best years are still to come.

He explained:  “I’ve loved it. It’s been an amazing period of my career in terms of winning a lot of trophies, playing a lot of games, I’ve worked under some unbelievable managers, the current one included. I’m really grateful for what the experience has been. It’s one I’ll never take for granted.

“Have I peaked? I hope not, I’m 26. I’m at an age where I want to be playing regular football, I want to be playing every week, I want to be competing for the trophies. I hope there’s a lot of growth in me yet and a lot of enjoyable times in the years to come.”

The defender says that he remains focused on helping his team secure a fourth successive title defence despite the uncertainty surrounding his future and claims transfer rumours are just part of the parcel in football.

Taylor said: “It’s football isn’t it? There’s transfer speculation, there’s contracts, this is what happens in football.

“It’s part of your job that you need to, one side is that side of it and one side is the football side. Rangers ace returns to training camp despite exit links

Connor Goldson is a surprise member of the Rangers squad for the upcoming pre-season friendly clash with Birmingham City.

The defender jetted to Cyprus at the weekend for signing talks with Aris Limassol. The Daily Record reported at the time that the English centre back was with the club for a medical but now understands that he has returned to training with Rangers in a shock transfer U-turn.

The publication state that Serie A heavyweights and Europa League champions Atalanta have seen a second bid for the Denmark international rejected, with the Hoops holding out for a higher fee.

O’Riley, who contributed to 31 goals for Brendan Rodgers’ side last term, has drawn interest from several parties this summer after a superb season in the Scottish Premier League, is valued at around £25m by the league champions, with Atalanta bidding shorter than that at £15m and seeing their efforts rejected.

They face competition for O’Riley from Saints, who are reportedly ready to table an O’Riley offer of their own that it is believed could come close or even surpass their record transfer, which is currently held by Kamaldeen Sulemana for £22m.

However, both clubs are faltering in their attempts thus far, with a £15m bid from Atalanta being rejected alongside the interest from Russell Martin’s men. It is believed, according to HITC, that Southampton are ready to go near their transfer record to secure O’Riley’s services.

Rak-Sakyi is keen to leave Selhurst Park and play under Russell Martin too. The fact that Palace look to be closing in on a move for another wide man in Ismaila Sarr from Marseille, according to Fabrizio Romano, could see things develop further over the next few weeks with this deal.

French newspaper L’Equipe reports they’ve also moved for Yvon Mvogo, who has been told he can leave Lorient this summer for the right price. He has just a year remaining on his contract, and with Lorient relegated to Ligue 2 he’s available.

However, it’s stated the player ‘has not agreed to join Celtic’, making it sound like he’s snubbed the club. Instead he could be set for a move to Bournemouth and the Premier League.

Bournemouth and Lorient share a major shareholder, and that would help the move go through.

L’Equipe may well be overstating Celtic’s interest. Kasper Schmeichel arriving wasn’t an overnight thing and it’s not hard to argue that he’d be preferable as a free agent.

Celtic are chasing a move for a long-term target this summer as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Scottish Premiership campaign, it has been reported.

Celtic focus on permanent moves for loanees

Following the Scottish League and Cup double (both at the expense of bitter rivals Rangers), Brendan Rodgers‘ side have had a quiet summer. They have replaced the retired Joe Hart with veteran shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel, who has joined on a one-year deal after his time with Belgian side Anderlecht came to a close.

“Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success.” he told the club website.

They have also confirmed a deal for backup goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, with the 22-year-old arriving from Aston Villa. But much of the focus has been on trying to negotiate permanent moves for their successful loanees last season.

Striker Adam Idah was a priority for Rodgers at the end of the season after he scored nine times on loan from Norwich, but a deal is looking increasingly difficult to pull off.

Speaking to the media last week, new Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup suggested he wanted Idah to remain at Carrow Road.

“Like we said from day one, he’s a vital part of the group and of the squad here. Luckily, or maybe unfortunately, we have players where there’s also interest from other clubs. But we should always strive to have that, that’s important for us.”

“But Adam’s working hard in training, a good guy with good energy. He’s really doing well. And I hope it’s obvious for him and everyone that he will play a vital part for this team.”

They are having better luck with fellow loanee Paulo Bernardo though, with reports from Scotland claiming that a deal for the midfielder is “all but done” in a move that will see Celtic shell out just under £3.4m to bring the 21-year-old to Celtic Park.
He may not be the only midfield arrival, though.

Celtic set to resume long chase

That comes with Sport Witness relaying claims from Turkey that Celtic remain interested in midfielder Jakub Kaluzinski. The Hoops were keen to sign him during his time at Lechia Gdansk, the report suggests, but the young Polish midfielder completed a move to Turkish side Antalyaspor last summer.

Now, 12 months on, Celtic remain interested, it is alleged, and there is no suggestion that he is unobtainable despite being under contract until 2026. On the contrary, it is added that a deal could be completed for just €4m (£3.3m), though Spanish side Rayo Vallodolid are also thought to be chasing his signature.

It remains to be seen whether a move for the 21-year-old talent is given priority given the other areas of need in the Hoops squad, but it is certainly one to keep an eye on ahead of the new campaign.

Real Valladolid is reportedly preparing to increase their offer for Jakub Kaluzinski, the Polish midfielder currently playing for Antalyaspor, amidst interest from Celtic.

With Celtic focused on other midfield targets, Valladolid are pushing to strike a deal. The La Liga club had an initial bid of €2.5 million turned down by Antalyaspor, who are holding out for a fee closer to €4 million. According to reports from Sporx, Valladolid is set to make a renewed effort to sign the midfielder.

Kasper Schmeichel’s move to Celtic has been met with a thumbs up – as he is filled with excitement over his Parkhead chances.

The goalkeeper has signed a one-year deal with Brendan Rodgers’ side after time at Anderlecht. He worked with the Celtic boss while at Leicester City and the 37-year-old arrives at a club awaiting Champions League football this season.

Their official X account has taken notice of the move and shared a photo of the keeper in America wearing Celtic colours, offering a simple thumbs up to the move. Schmeichel himself can’t wait to get started. He said: “They’ve made it really easy to integrate. Tessmann averaged 6.7 ball recoveries per game across 37 appearances in the Serie B last term, whilst McGregor managed 6.6 per match in the Premiership, which suggests that both players can consistently recover the ball back for their side.

Hoops set price for in-demand midfield ace

Celtic have warned club they will not be bullied into selling midfield ace Matt O’Riley this summer. Scotland striker makes Serie A move

Scotland international striker Che Adams has turned down offers to return to the EPL after making a surprise move to Italian side Torino. The striker, who started all three of Scotland’s Euro 2024 games, had been available as a free agent having come to the end of his contract with Southampton and was in high-demand after scoring 16 goals in the EFL Championship last year. Rangers boss Philippe Clement could be set for a sensational transfer U-turn this summer after it emerged the Ibrox giants may look to ‘test’ Hearts’ resolve over free-scoring striker Lawrence Shankland. According to the Daily Record, the Belgian boss has placed the Scotland international back onto his wanted list this summer despite deciding against a move for the 24-goal striker in January. The 28-year-old forward was the Scottish Premiership’s leading goal scorer last term and has been heavily linked with a move to Glasgow over the last six months, though the Tynecastle club insist no bid has been forthcoming throughout. A story from Sporx in Turkey now claims that Celtic could soon make a bid for Jakub Kaluzinski.

The Poland international is being valued at €4m (£3.4m) by Antalyaspor this summer, with Real Valladolid also keen to secure his signature.

Sporx believe the Spanish side have already seen a €2.5m (£2.1m) offer rejected.

Interestingly, the Turkish news outlet add that Celtic could soon make a bid of their own, having monitored Kaluzinski since his time at Lechia Gdańsk – which started in 2020 and ended in July 2023 when he signed for Antalyaspor.

The man from Gdańsk – aged 21 – made 35 appearances in defensive midfield for Antalyaspor last season, providing two assists.

Kaluzinski also made Poland’s preliminary squad for UEFA Euro 2024 this summer, but did not make the final cut.

Bhoys must be quick

Celtic need to decide whether they are serious about signing Kaluzinski soon, as Sporx believe Real Valladolid are already preparing an improved bid.

The Spanish side are seemingly making good progress in negotiations with Antalyaspor, and will be able to move onto discussions over personal terms with the Pole if a fee is agreed.

That would leave Celtic even further behind in this transfer battle, so those at Celtic Park must submit a bid for Kaluzinski soon, or else they risk missing out on the Antalyaspor No.18 this summer – there could soon be money to spend too.

Ultimately, a sum of £3.4m is not a lot to spend on a promising 21-year-old who is showing excellent development, and if the move goes well, Celtic could stand to make a huge profit, given his age.

Rangers stalwart Connor Goldson has successfully undergone medical tests with Aris Limassol ahead of his proposed departure from Ibrox.

Football Scotland understands that the centre back has already flown out to Cyprus to finalise the move while reports from the Daily Record add that the deal is imminent.

Aris Limassol finished fourth in the Cypriot Super League last season and see the option of signing Goldson as a major coup given his vast experience of competing at the highest level.

The Wolverhampton born defender has represented the Light Blues on 309 occasions in all competitions since making the move to Glasgow in the summer of 2018.

In that time he has lifted the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and most recently the Scottish League Cup. The 31-year-old also formed part of the team which defied expectations to reach the final of the Europa League in 2022 before a heartbreaking defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Former manager Steven Gerrard, now of Al Ettifaq, and League One side Birmingham City were both credited with interest in the versatile defender, but it appears that Limassol have won the race.

Goldson was under contract at Rangers until 2026 and it is suspected that the Gers will also get a sizable fee from his departure that can be reinvested in the first team squad throughout the summer.

Celtic suffer transfer blow as Fiorentina push to sign target

Fiorentina are the frontrunners to sign highly-rated Celtic target Andrea Colpani this summer, according to reports from Italian outlet Firenze Viola. Colpani is a 25-year-old winger that has represented Italy at both U20 and U21 level. He started his career at Atalanta after progressing through the club’s academy, but is best known for his four-year association with Monza.

Colpani originally arrived at Monza on a two-year loan deal in 2020 but this move was ultimately made permanent in 2022 after a string of impressive performances which saw him help the White and Reds reach the top-flight for the first time in their history.

The young winger has continued to thrive since making the move to Serie A. In the 2022/23 campaign he contributed four goals and one assist from 27 appearances to help the team beat the drop in 11th position.

Last term, he doubled his goal tally with eight strikes and also recorded four assists as his team finished 12th in the Serie A table. Colpani’s ability to influence games has earned interest from Celtic, who are keen to add further goals from out wide after the high-profile departure of Jota last summer.

However, Fiorentina are currently the favourites to secure his signature. Firenze Viola claims negotiations are ongoing but claims the stumbling block at the moment is the method of the transfer. Fiorentina are hoping to strike a loan deal for Colpani which includes an option to buy, while Monza are only willing to sell their star asset if they receive a permanent bid.

There is no current agreement on valuation between the two parties, but it is reported that the gap is close and can easily be resolved in the coming weeks.

Fiorentina would be able to offer the winger Europa Conference League football next season as they aim to win the competition after losing back-to-back finals. Whereas, Celtic would be able to offer the winger Champions League football if they return to the table with a bid.

Celtic are chasing a move for a long-term target this summer as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Scottish Premiership campaign, it has been reported.

Celtic focus on permanent moves for loanees

Following the Scottish League and Cup double (both at the expense of bitter rivals Rangers), Brendan Rodgers‘ side have had a quiet summer. They have replaced the retired Joe Hart with veteran shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel, who has joined on a one-year deal after his time with Belgian side Anderlecht came to a close.

“Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success.” he told the club website.

They have also confirmed a deal for backup goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, with the 22-year-old arriving from Aston Villa. But much of the focus has been on trying to negotiate permanent moves for their successful loanees last season.

Striker Adam Idah was a priority for Rodgers at the end of the season after he scored nine times on loan from Norwich, but a deal is looking increasingly difficult to pull off.

Speaking to the media last week, new Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup suggested he wanted Idah to remain at Carrow Road.

“Like we said from day one, he’s a vital part of the group and of the squad here. Luckily, or maybe unfortunately, we have players where there’s also interest from other clubs. But we should always strive to have that, that’s important for us.”

“But Adam’s working hard in training, a good guy with good energy. He’s really doing well. And I hope it’s obvious for him and everyone that he will play a vital part for this team.”

They are having better luck with fellow loanee Paulo Bernardo though, with reports from Scotland claiming that a deal for the midfielder is “all but done” in a move that will see Celtic shell out just under £3.4m to bring the 21-year-old to Celtic Park.

He may not be the only midfield arrival, though.

Celtic set to resume long chase

That comes with Sport Witness relaying claims from Turkey that Celtic remain interested in midfielder Jakub Kaluzinski. The Hoops were keen to sign him during his time at Lechia Gdansk, the report suggests, but the young Polish midfielder completed a move to Turkish side Antalyaspor last summer.

Now, 12 months on, Celtic remain interested, it is alleged, and there is no suggestion that he is unobtainable despite being under contract until 2026. On the contrary, it is added that a deal could be completed for just €4m (£3.3m), though Spanish side Rayo Vallodolid are also thought to be chasing his signature.

It remains to be seen whether a move for the 21-year-old talent is given priority given the other areas of need in the Hoops squad, but it is certainly one to keep an eye on ahead of the new campaign.

Celtic Star Flying Out Tonight To Seal Move Away

Celtic goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist is set to undergo his medical with Rapid Bucharest before finalising his exit from the Glasgow club, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The goalkeeper has been on Celtic’s books since June 2022 but has not been able to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper.

Over the course course of his two-year stay, the 32-year-old managed just two appearances and is now set to bring his stint there to an end.

Siegrist is now close to a move to Romania where Rapid Bucharest have been trying to sign him.

In fact, Siegrist is flying in to Bucharest this evening, where he will then be put through his medical paces.

Siegrist has already agreed a two-year deal with Rapid Bucharest with the club having the option of extending the stay by another year.

At Superbet Arena-Giulesti Siegrist will be playing under former Celtic manager Neil Lennon, who took over only in May.

Siegrist is a product of Aston Villa’s youth academy but never got the chance to make his mark there.

 

Norwich City transfers: Chris Sutton on Adam Idah and Celtic

Norwich City legend Chris Sutton still expects Adam Idah to leave the club this summer, despite a positive start to pre-season.

Celtic’s interest in the 23-year-old continues to dominate headlines north of the border, with manager Brendan Rodgers keen to bring him back to Parkhead.

Idah is also open to re-joining his former loan club after a successful spell in Scotland, but Canaries head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup has made his appreciation of the Irishman clear.

City’s new boss started him both of their pre-season clashes in Belgium, praising him after an assist in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Standard Liege. That came after a series of glowing assessments earlier in the summer, with both Thorup and sporting director Ben Knapper talking up the striker’s talents.

The Hoops have yet to make an acceptable bid for Idah, but have seen their funds boosted after selling out-of-favour South Korean international Oh Hyeon-gyu.

Former Norwich and Celtic forward Sutton says that could be an indicator the Scottish champions haven’t given up on Idah up yet, with squad building continuing less than two weeks out from their opening league game against Kilmarnock.

“The return of the international players will give the side a more familiar look over in the United States but there is still work to be done,” he wrote in his Daily Record column.

“The decision to allow Oh Hyeon-gyu to leave suggests to me Celtic are confident they will get Adam Idah back, despite some of the noises from Norwich.

“I’m sure Rodgers would have preferred to have him on board for the US but the good thing about Idah is they know all about him and he wouldn’t need time to settle in.

“Celtic can afford to wait until the deal is right and he’ll walk back into the set-up without too much fuss.”

The Swiss goalkeeper has struck a two-year agreement with the Romanian club, which also includes an option to extend for a further year. No fee has been mentioned in the reports.

The move comes after Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed that Siegrist would be leaving the club this summer. The arrival of Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo at Celtic Park had cast doubt over Siegrist’s future, with speculation about his departure intensifying even further.

Neil Lennon, the former Celtic manager who now manages Rapid Bucharest, has shown a keen interest in bringing Siegrist to his current team. Celtic has facilitated the move by allowing the 32-year-old to travel to Romania to negotiate terms, indicating a mutual interest in securing a permanent deal.

Leeds United enter race for 33-goal Celtic and Everton target as Derby discuss Sunderland and Newcastle target exit

The latest transfer talk from across the Championship.

Leeds United and Ipswich Town are reportedly the latest clubs to shown an interest in Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics.

The Mirror have claimed Rovers have offered an improved contract to the Republic of Ireland international as they do all they can to persuade Szmodics to remain at Ewood Park. However, reports have suggested a number of Premier League clubs have registered an interest in the forward and Ipswich are the latest addition to a growing list as they prepare for their long-awaited return to the top flight.

Leeds are also said to be keen on Szmodics as the Whites aim to shake off the disappointment of last season’s Championship play-off final loss against Southampton and fire their way to promotion back into the Premier League at the second attempt. With the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto both likely to leave Elland Road before the end of the summer transfer window, Leeds are said to have put their interest ‘on the table’ – and Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes the addition of his former striker would ‘guarantee promotion’ for the Whites.

Speaking to the Posh website, he said: “Sammie, if I was Leeds United, because they are going to lose some talent, doing what they have to do to bring in. He is pretty much guaranteeing you promotion because you’re buying the Golden Boot winner. That’s my tip Leeds fans, you should be buying Sammie Szmodics. Sorry Blackburn fans.”

The likes of Celtic and Everton have also been linked with a move for Szmodics in recent months and the forward has already hinted he would like to try and prove the doubters wrong by making a step into a higher level of the game. Derby discuss possible departure of Sunderland target

Derby County manager Paul Warne has revealed he is taking ‘one phone call a day’ about a possible move for Rams youngster Dajaune Brown.

At this moment in time he is staying within the camp until otherwise… but I try not to pick people through reputation, if he is the best striker in the building then I would be stupid not to play him.

“He has got a long way to go. We will see him again in the next couple of pre-season games and go from there. If I think it is better for him to go out on loan then there are plenty of suitors, but you get nine on the bench and you need to keep players when you can.”

 

Celtic in the hunt to land £6m star who could be Hatate 2.0

Celtic are just a couple of weeks away from opening their Scottish Premiership campaign for the 2024/25 season with a clash against Kilmarnock at Parkhead.

The Hoops have made two additions to their first-team squad so far during the summer transfer window, ahead of the season-opener, and both are goalkeepers.

Kasper Schmeichel has come in on a free transfer from Anderlecht to replace fellow veteran Joe Hart, whilst Viljami Sinisalo has joined from Aston Villa on a permanent deal.

Hart retired at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, after three years with the club, and Celtic now have two shot-stoppers to compete for his place.

The Scottish giants are not done there, though, as they have reportedly held talks over a deal for Antwerp star Michel-Ange Balikwisha, whilst they have agreed a £3.5m deal to sign Paulo Bernardo from Benfica.

This shows that the club are currently working on transfers to come in and improve their options across the park after resolved their goalkeeper issues first and foremost.

Whilst Bernardo appears poised to come in to bolster Brendan Rodgers‘ midfield ranks, after spending last season on loan at Parkhead, Celtic are also interested in a deal to bring another midfielder to Glasgow before the end of the summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Record, the Premiership champions are in the hunt to sign American midfielder Tanner Tessmann from Venezia this summer.

The report claims that the Scottish giants have been ‘alerted’ to the potential of a deal being on the cards for the midfield maestro, as his proposed move to Inter fell through.

It also states that he is valued at £6m and it remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops have that in their budget, or if they are willing to spend that on him.

Tessmann, who was dubbed a “cerebral operator” by talent ID recruiter Jonathan Stoop, has emerged as a target amid interest in current Bhoys star Matt O’Riley.

The Daily Record adds that Liverpool are now interested in a swoop for the Denmark international, whilst Serie A side Atalanta are also keen on him.

However, Tessmann’s form for Venezia and style of play actually suggests that he would be more suited as an alternative or future successor to Reo Hatate in the middle of the park, rather than O’Riley – if he were to depart this summer.

The Japan international is a dynamic midfielder who does not offer too much in terms of his defensive contributions due to his lack of physicality.

In the 2022/23 season, the 26-year-old star produced six goals, eight assists, and ten ‘big chances’ created in 32 league matches for the Scottish giants.

Hatate proved that he has the quality, movement, and vision, to be a reliable source of goals and creativity from a midfield position at Premiership level, with 14 direct goal contributions in those 32 games.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate still showcased his ability in the final third with seven direct goal contributions in just 12 starts, which works out as more than one every other start on average.

His lack of game time in the league, though, came down to three separate injury issues that he sustained throughout the campaign, including one to each calf and one to his hamstring. Those three blows kept the midfielder out of action for a staggering 40 games for club and country.

The midfield ace’s injury problems are a cause for concern and that is why Rodgers should swoop to sign Tessmann from Venezia this summer, as the American star could come in as a dream alternative to Hatate, a 2.0 version of the Japan international.

More Celtic youngsters are set to join the club’s feeder team in Austria, according to a sporting director.

But I also think for development I want to bring some young, maybe a player from within.

“Rocco was that but he’s moved on. So we may have to look elsewhere. But three is a really good number. Two, I would say to be number one strikers, and one that we can nurture and develop.”

Rodgers is chasing a number of targets and has been linked with moves for Venezia midfielder Tanner Tessmann and Royal Antwerp winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha.

Celts are edging closer to bringing Paulo Bernardo in on a permanent deal from Benfica while keepers Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo have already checked in. Rodgers remained tight-lipped on transfer talk but said: “I’m really hopeful every day. We know we need to improve the squad.

The Hoops strolled to a 4-0 win against DC United in Washington at the weekend but the English Premier League champs will be a a huge step up, even if they still have some international stars to come back.

Rodgers said: “I think our next two games against Manchester City and Chelsea, another step for us in our pre-season. It’s gone ever so well to this point. Manchester City I know well, I’ve faced them many times.

“I think that the physical nature of the three games – on Saturday, we were behind DC because they’re midway through the season and at a really good physical level so we had to really push. The next two games we might be a week or so ahead of the two teams we play. But it doesn’t really matter.

“For us it’s they’re two fantastic preparation games against two world class clubs and I’m really looking forward to them and two teams that I know very well.”

 

Former Celtic hero, Chris Sutton, has told how he can’t believe what he’s been hearing about the signing of Kasper Schmeichel this week.

At 37, the signing of Schmeichel may have raised some eyebrows but it seems that enough negativity has caught the ears of Sutton and he wasn’t best pleased about it.

Sutton said [Daily Record], “There was always going to be big gloves to fill at Celtic following Joe Hart’s decision to retire at the end of last season.

“But Brendan Rodgers has found one of the few keepers around that can slot into them with ease. Hart had experience, stature and presence at the back for the club – and that is exactly what Kasper Schmeichel will bring as well.

“I find it quite incredible that there’s been some resistance to the signing. Listen, you always want the perfect fit.

“In an ideal world, you’d go out and sign some 28-year-old international who has yet to hit his peak, a guy with Champions League experience and who could make the club a lot of money down the line.

“But in the real world, those players are extremely hard to find – and even harder to afford. There are teams paying 10s of millions for those kinds of keepers.

“Celtic are not going to do that. I’ve got no doubts Schmeichel will be a success. I watched him at the Euros and he was excellent.”

I’ve got to say, I’ve not heard much negativity about the signing of Schmeichel, to be honest. Yes, there have been a few doubters but, in my humble opinion, the reaction to the Danish keeper coming to Paradise has largely been positive.

Schmeichel proved this summer that he still has what it takes to perform at the top level in football after making it to the last 16 of Euro 2024 with Denmark.

If the veteran ‘keeper can provide that level of performance at club level with Celtic next season, then those murmurings surrounding his capture will quickly dissipate into thin air.

Liverpool has been linked with Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley. But time could be running out if it wants to strike a deal, with multiple bids going in for him.

Outside of the Scottish top flight, O’Riley is a relatively unknown quantity. But the former Fulham academy prospect just had a hugely successful season with Celtic, earning his first Denmark caps and scoring 18 times from midfield in the league.

Liverpool was actually credited with transfer interest back in 2022. That might well mean he was originally on a Michael Edwards list, and it would be no surprise to learn that tabs have been kept on him at Anfield in the intervening years.

And if ever there was a time to act, it may well be now, with Edwards back in the fold and O’Riley having just had such a brilliant campaign. At 23, he seems ready for the next step in his career — even if former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic has no need to sell.

But if Liverpool is genuinely interested, it needs to get a move on. His form has not gone unnoticed, and Atalanta looks particularly keen to secure his services.

According to Gianluca di Marzio, the Serie A side has now tabled three bids to Celtic. The latest is worth $18.5m (£14.5m/€17m).

Moreover, O’Riley has agreed the outline of a five-year deal with Atalanta. Having suffered a Europa League defeat last season, Liverpool will not now want to come off second-best in the transfer market.

Liverpool.com says: Of course, Liverpool would not be “losing” to Atalanta if it never had any intention of making a bid. And that’s certainly a possibility, given the huge step up required from Celtic straight to Anfield.

Perhaps more pertinently than that, O’Riley does not meet a particular positional need for Liverpool. In fact, it signed three players in a broadly comparable mold last summer, adding Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch; if Arne Slot is to dip into the market in midfield, it will surely be for a specialist number six.

Much probably depends on just how high Liverpool thinks O’Riley’s ceiling is. It’s very believable that it is keeping tabs, but it will only move without having a clear space in the squad for him if it thinks he still has many more levels to find. Atalanta would be an intriguing transfer for him.

News of Celtic‘s interest first came from Gianluca Di Marzio, who says the Hoops have joined Brentford, as well as Italy’s Torino, Parma and Como in pursuing the 22-year-old. There’s also been interest from Everton in the past, while Ipswich had reportedly hoped his move to Inter would go through so they could sign him on loan. So, what’s all the fuss about?

Who is Tanner Tessmann?

A central midfielder who started playing soccer at collegiate level in Alabama, Tessmann’s talent was spotted by FC Dallas in MLS who signed him to their academy in 2016. Then just 15, he quickly rose through the ranks, making his first-team debut in 2021. And he was just 19 games into his career as a senior pro when he was handed his first USA cap by Gregg Berhalter.

Venezia gave him his European breakthrough in 2021, paying just over £3m to bring him to Italy. A 20-year-old in his first season abroad, he initially struggled in Serie A – particularly with Venezia themselves scrambling to keep their heads above water. They dropped into Serie B, but that proved to be a blessing in disguise for Tessmann.

Out of the glare of the top flight, he has blossomed into a creative force of nature and managed 10 goal involvements last season (7G 3A) – a career best. Physically as strong as they come, he’s a bit of an all-rounder with an improving eye for goal and knows a key pass when he sees one. He’s on an upwards trajectory, and that’s why clubs around Europe are starting to take notice – getting in before he sets Serie A alight this season and his value skyrockets.

How much will he cost?

Venezia reportedly want €8m (£6.75m) for his services – a seemingly reasonable ask, but it’s thought that’s what torpedoed his move to Inter, who had plans to sign him and then loan him out. Club director Filippo Antonelli told TuttoMercato, he said: “It was closed with Inter. We wanted to keep the player on loan, but he wants to go elsewhere. Inter have been looking for a solution but they still haven’t identified which club he could join on loan. The deal may collapse because of this.”

It was reported that Ipswich were keen to take him on loan if that went through, but it’s now being reported all over Italy that the deal is off the table. And that leaves Celtic and Brentford, as well as a host of Italian clubs, from Serie A newboys Como to Turin giants Torino, circling like sharks.

£6.75m is at the high end of what Celtic would hope to pay but the Ipswich route of signing him on loan, if he signs for a powerhouse where he’s unlikely to play regularly, could be another way to get the deal done and limit the risk that comes with that type of immediate investment.

At the Olympics this summer! Tessmann is expected to captain the American U23 side at the Paris games and says it would be a dream of his to lift Gold. The US kick off against France on July 24 and any impressive performances from Tessmann could add a zero to his price tag.

“Besides Venezia and winning promotion, the Olympics is my main focus. To be part of one of the biggest sporting events in the world and represent my country would be a dream come true. Wow, it would just be an honour to be there.”

Liverpool has been linked with a flurry of new players recently as we approach the final month of the transfer window. One of the more left-field names to emerge is Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.

It’s been a slow burn for the new era at Liverpool, with sporting director Richard Hughes keeping his powder dry while Arne Slot gets to grips with the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. The upshot is that the Reds are one of just two Premier League sides yet to dip into the transfer market.

That only invites more scrutiny on the first deal when it finally happens. And it’s been suggested that O’Riley could be handed the honor of being the first through the door, with Rudy Galetti reporting that Liverpool is being kept “well-informed” on the situation.

Atalanta of Serie A has supposedly “moved first” for the Celtic man, but it remains an open race. In La Liga, Atletico Madrid is also staying abreast of developments.

So who exactly is O’Riley, and what’s the potential transfer appeal to Liverpool? The 23-year-old moved north of the border to Celtic from MK Dons in January 2022, having initially come through the youth system at Fulham (he made a League Cup appearance in 2018/19, when the Cottagers were in the top flight, but is yet to taste Premier League action).

Born in England, he was eligible to represent Denmark or Norway through his mother’s side. Having played for various English age-group sides, he made the switch at U21 level, and is now a full Danish international.

That speaks to the impressive form he has continued to show at Celtic. He showed at MK Dons that he is a central midfielder with an uncommon eye for a goal, and that has been the case in Scotland as well.

O’Riley hit 18 goals in the Scottish top flight last season, contributing 13 assists for good measure. He also played the vast majority of minutes, having remained remarkably injury-free throughout his career to date.

It’s not actually the first time Liverpool has been credited with an interest. Back in 2022, just six months into O’Riley’s stint at Celtic, the Reds were among a host of top clubs supposedly tracking the midfielder.

If Liverpool has continued to keep a watchful eye, it will have seen a player continuing to develop and thrive. This could be an interesting one to watch.

Liverpool.com says: There is undoubtedly talent to be found in the Scottish top flight. And O’Riley comes with the added benefit of experience in the English football pyramid.

Conor Bradley has proven that the jump from League One to the Premier League is far from insurmountable, and O’Riley has had a pretty ideal intermediate step at Celtic. That’s given him some Champions League game time, as well as the responsibility of playing a central role in a title charge.

Celtic have brought in two new players during the summer window and now seem to be pushing on with attempts for more.

Both the players they’ve signed have been goalkeepers – the experienced Kasper Schmeichel along with the highly-rated younger man Viljami Sinisalo, who will be mentored by and learn from the Dane over the next season or two, with a view to taking over as No.1.

Manager Brendan Rodgers wants quality additions in other areas too and is pressing on with that. Midfielder Paulo Bernardo is one of those desired after impressing enough on loan last season, and a permanent deal for him seems to be getting closer and closer.

Adam Idah has been handed another Norwich start as they look determined to disappoint Celtic and include him in their plans.

The Hoops and manager Brendan Rodgers would love to bring the Republic of Ireland striker back on a permanent deal after his more-than-productive half-season on loan in the last campaign. It’s looking like a tricky one to do though and Canaries’ new boss Johannes Hoff Thorup stated he wanted to take a look at the player in pre-season.

He was then picked from the start when the English Championship side faced Club Brugge in a friendly earlier in the week. Idah was then hooked after just half an hour of the match but Thorup later insisted it was a planned substitution. He also sent a strong message to Celtic with his post-match comments.

“Hopefully, on Saturday we can build him up to a little bit more. From watching his qualities and what he can do, he will be an important player for us. We have to take into consideration this was the first 30 minutes from him for a long while and he will be better. But I think he showed some signs of what we can get out of him.

“We gave him a couple of passes where he had to chest it and hold it and gave a couple of lay-offs to progress the game. I think he did well in that sense. We could have used him even more in the offensive part of the game but I think that will come. From what I see, it’s a matter of time.”

Now, Idah starts for Norwich again today. He leads the line for them in their latest friendly against Standard Liege.

Newcastle United have announced the signing of 19-year-old defender Miodrag Pivas from Serbian club FK Jedinstvo Ub.

Pivas, who has represented Serbia at Under-17 level, played as a defensive midfielder for Jedinstvo last season as they won promotion to the Serbian Super Liga.

Pivas said: “It’s absolutely unbelievable to join such a big club like Newcastle United and I cannot wait to get started. I see the project of the club and it looks great which helped convince me to sign for Newcastle.

“I see the young players have developed very well here and I would like to do the same – to develop and get into Newcastle’s first team. I’m very excited and I can’t wait to begin.”

Magpies chief executive Darren Eales said Pivas’ capture was part of an ongoing drive to identify potential as the club continues to operate within Premier League profitability and sustainability rules.

Eales said: “Miodrag is a promising talent with high potential. Our recruitment network is continuing to watch young players like Miodrag around the world with a view to identifying and developing them into first-team players of the future.”

On Friday Celtic Women wrapped up a deal to bring in Republic of Ireland attacker Saoirse Noonan.

The 25-year-old Cork native joins the Hoops on a three-year deal after a stint with Durham in the FA Women’s Championship. She’ll link up with fellow Ireland international Caitlin Hayes at the reigning champions.

“It’s a bit surreal for me,” said Noonan. “I’ve been a Celtic fan growing up, all my family are Celtic fans. To be here is a bit surreal and I can’t wait to get going.

“Celtic is a huge club and I’m delighted to be part of it. I’m Irish, I play with my heart on my sleeve, I bleed with green. I’ll give my all, work hard as I can and hopefully get plenty of goals.”

All was quiet on the transfer front at Celtic Park. The Scottish Premiership champions seemed content with the squad which just secured a third consecutive league title before they finally burst into life to solve their goalkeeper problem. Having welcomed Viljami Sinisalo from Aston Villa, Celtic wasted no time finding competition and an outright No 1 to replace the retired Joe Hart – signing Premier League winner Schmeichel on a free deal.

Speaking to CelticTV after officially signing for the Scottish giants, Schmeichel said: “I am absolutely delighted to join Celtic and can’t wait to get started.

“Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success. Celtic is what football is all about.

“I know Brendan very well, too. He is a top manager and someone I can’t wait to work with again. I’m really looking forward to meeting up with the boys in America and start our work and then, of course, meet our fans who bring so much to Celtic. Now, after finding their replacement for Hart, the Bhoys’ transfer window looks unlikely to die down again. According to reporter Sacha Tavolieri, Rodgers has now personally held talks with Michel-Ange Balikwisha in an attempt to convince the winger into a move away from Royal Antwerp amid recent talks.

Just 23 years old, Balikwisha could emerge as Celtic’s first attacking boost of the summer before the transfer window slams shut at the end of next month.

Following recent reports linking the forward with a summer move away from Scotland, Celtic may need to replace Hyeon-gyu Oh in the coming weeks by welcoming Balikwisha. The Antwerp left-winger, who can also play as a second-striker, has plenty of potential and could become the latest player to realise that potential under the guidance of Rodgers.

After ten goals and eight assists in all competitions for Royal Antwerp last season, Balikwisha has little to prove on the output front, and if Celtic lose Matt O’Riley as well as key depth in Oh this summer, goals could be of short supply. Following talks with Rodgers, the 23-year-old is certainly one to keep an eye on.

There were always going to be big gloves to fill at Celtic following Joe Hart’s decision to retire at the end of last season.

But Brendan Rodgers has found one of the few keepers around that can slot into them with ease. Hart had experience, stature and presence at the back for the club – and that is exactly what Kasper Schmeichel will bring as well. I find it quite incredible that there’s been some resistance to the signing.

Listen, you always want the perfect fit. In an ideal world you’d go out and sign some 28-year-old international who has yet to hit his peak, a guy with Champions League experience and who could make the club a lot of money down the line. But in the real world, those players are extremely hard to find – and even harder to afford. There are teams paying 10s of millions for those kinds of keepers. Celtic are not going to do that.

So they have to think out side the box. They can either go for an experienced veteran or an up and coming youngster. It turns out they have done both.

Schemeichel is on the way and Viljami Sinisalo has also arrived with a view of him being No.1 in the future. There’s a succession plan in place. I’ve been mildly critical at the lack of signings so far this summer but you have to say the two keepers coming in looks like smart business.

Schmeichel will be the main man and there’s an eye on the future with Sinisalo, who has come in as a prospect with a lot of potential. I’ve got no doubts Schmeichel will be a success. I watched him at the Euros and he was excellent.

People will point to his age and the fact he’s actually older than Hart, who has just called time on his career. But age is just a number – especially when it comes to shot-stoppers.

Schmeichel didn’t look like he’d lost any sharpness for Denmark as he took his cap count to way beyond the century. He also played the majority of games for Anderlecht in Belgium last season.

No one can doubt his pedigree either. It’s slightly interesting in that it was Rodgers who let him go from Leicester City, but clearly the pair had a solid relationship given they will be reunited at Celtic. I’d be looking at Schmeichel to have a similar role as Hart had at the club.

The former No.1 had the same questions asked about him when he arrived. He was youngster than Schmeichel now but some people were suggesting he was washed up or on the wane.

Instead he was reinvigorated. Hart was one of the biggest influences in the dressing room. His leadership and temperament was crucial. It’s not easy living in the Glasgow goldfish bowl and it’s not just about being a decent keeper.

It’s about having concentration, providing inspiration and leading by example in a dressing room full of young players from around the world. Callum McGregor is the Celtic captain but Hart was a right hand man. He had an outstanding career – and the same goes for Schmeichel.

The Dane has been around the top level for two decades and he won’t be fazed by the challenge ahead at Celtic. He knows the rules in this city. He’ll know second place is last in this environment and you’d expect him to thrive in it.

Despite some lukewarm responses, I wouldn’t be surprised if Schmeichel won over the supporters the same way Hart did and he becomes a player they eventually love. It’ll be interesting to see how Sinisalo fares in the long term.

He was highly-rated at the Aston Villa academy and he’s on the back of a strong season at Exeter City, albeit at a lower level. My old team-mate Gary Caldwell was his manager there and he’s raved about the youngster.

He’s only 22-year-old and already been capped by Finland. The five-year deal suggests a development plan but we might see him get a few games here and there in his first season. It’s now all about who will be in front of the keepers.

The return of the international players will give the side a more familiar look over in the United States but there is still work to be done. The decision to allow Oh Hyeon-gyu to leave suggests to me Celtic are confident they will get Adam Idah back – despite some of the noises from Norwich.

I’m sure Rodgers would have preferred to have him on board for the US but the good thing about Idah is they know all about him and he wouldn’t need time to settle in. Celtic can afford to wait until the deal is right and he’ll walk back into the set-up without too much fuss.

Rodgers will need another striker though as Kyogo is the only one they have got right now. Even if Idah arrives, it still leaves them at least one short with Rocco Vata also heading for the door.

The third forward role is a tough sell as game time won’t be a given. It could be back to the same formula as the keeper with either an experienced campaigner or a young prospect coming in. Regardless of the profile, Celtic do need another option up top. Rodgers has got the ball rolling in the transfer market but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Report: Kasper Schmeichel seals Celtic transfer as Leicester City legend reunited with Brendan Rodgers

The 37-year-old will succeed the recently retired Joe Hart between the sticks at Parkhead

Celtic have confirmed the signing of Kasper Schmeichel as the Denmark No1 takes over from the retired Joe Hart.

The Hoops have been in the market for a new shotstopper after legendary Hart decided to hang up his gloves. Now, Brendan Rodgers has finally got his wish after being reunited with his former Leicester City captain, Schmeichel. The Scottish champions had scoured the globe for a new first-choice keeper, with £8million-rated Sparta Prague star Peter Vindahl Jensen among their top targets.

But Rodgers has opted for a safe pair of hands in the vastly experienced Schmeichel, who played in all four Euro 2024 games for Denmark. The 105-times capped star was a free agent after spending a year in Belgium with Anderlecht. Schmeichel – who turns 38 in November – was part of Leicester City’s fairytale Premier League-winning story.

He also lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield during Rodgers’ reign in charge of the Foxes and previously credited the Northern Irishman among the most influential figures of his career. Speaking for the first time after being officially announced as a Celtic player, Schmeichel said: ““I am absolutely delighted to join Celtic and can’t wait to get started.

Schmeichel will work closely with fellow new Bhoy Viljami Sinisalo who has sealed a £1million switch from Aston Villa. The Finland international, 22, has been brought in as an understudy and will be mentored by Schmeichel with the view to eventually succeeding him between the sticks.

Celtic are poised to confirm the signing of veteran keeper Kasper Schmeichel in the next 24 hours.

The Denmark No1 is on his way to meet his new teammates in the USA today after passing his medical in Italy yesterday. Schmeichel, 37, will be reunited with Brendan Rodgers after the pair forged a close relationship at Leicester City. Schmeichel will mentor new back-up keeper Viljami Sinisalo, who sealed a £1million move from Aston Villa on Tuesday, and will fill the void vacated by the retired Joe Hart.

It’s understood the son of Manchester United legend Peter will put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. The 105-times capped star – who played all four games at the Euros – is a free agent after spending a year with Belgian giants Anderlecht.

Hoops boss Rodgers hopes his new first-choice keeper will soon be joined by midfielder Paulo Bernardo. Celts are said to have agreed an initial £3.5million fee with Benfica, with negotiations ongoing over future add-ons and personal terms. The former Portugal Under-21 international broke cover on Instagram last night by sharing a snap of himself in pre-season training with the Lisbon club.

Meanwhile Norwich City boss Johannes Hoff Thorup is adamant that Adam Idah will be an “important player” for him this year after watching the striker close up for the first time. Idah, 23, was thrown in from the start in yesterday’s 3-0 friendly defeat to Club Brugge but lasted just 33 minutes in a planned early change as he built up his match fitness.

Celtic are keen to bring the Old Firm Scottish Cup-winning goal hero back to Parkhead after the Irishman starred on loan last season. However, the Canaries are playing hardball and have already thrown out an opening £4m bid for their homegrown talent. And Thorup has made it clear to the Scottish champions that he sees Idah as a big part of his plans after being asked directly about his future.

Meanwhile Scotland defender Scott McKenna remains a free agent after his contract at Nottingham Forest expired. The ex-Aberdeen stopper has been linked with both Celtic and Rangers and admitted last month that he’d be open to returning to the Premiership. McKenna spent last season on loan with Copenhagen and the Danish club have hinted that they could attempt to lure him back this summer.

Finally, Oh Hyeon-gyu has issued a classy farewell message to Celtic fans after rubber-stamping his move to Genk at the weekend. The South Korean striker moved on after just a year-and-a-half in Glasgow but made it clear he has no hard feelings.

Trabzonspor linked with Tavernier

Rangers captain James Tavernier has emerged as a transfer target for Turkish side Trabzonspor. The Scottish Sun reports that the Super Lig outfit have made a formal offer for the 32-year-old, whose future has been under constant speculation during this transfer window, with a move to Saudi Arabia also mooted.

Trabzonspor are keen to strengthen their squad ahead of their domestic season and having already landed two former Rangers players in Borna Barisic and John Lundstram, they are now believed to be targeting the Ibrox skipper.

Rangers would listen to viable offer for Tavernier, with manager Philippe Clement stressing earlier this week that every one of his squad – with the exception of goalkeeper Jack Butland – is available for transfer if the price is right.

Conway trains with 21s

Scotland internationalist and reported Rangers target Tommy Conway has been banished to Bristol City’s Under-21 squad due to him not signing a new contract.

Conway is out of contract next summer but has not committed his future to the Robins, with the Ibrox club said to be monitoring the situation. The 21-year-old made his national team debut ahead of Euro 2024 and his club manager Liam Manning set the record straight on Conway’s situation.

“Tommy has had a contract offer on the table, which is an excellent offer,” said Manning. “This has been turned down, and not negotiated with the player expressing a desire to leave. The decision has been made for him to train with the U21s, with the focus wholly on players who are fully committed to what we are trying to achieve.”

Earlier, Schmeichel has penned an emotional farewell to Anderlecht supporters. The Danish internationalist wrote on Instagram: “Grateful for my time at Anderlecht – a club with incredible passion and history. I’ll always remember the memories and friendships made here.”

Hibs land keeper

Hibs have signed former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Jordan Smith after allowing Jojo Wollacott to return to England. The 29-year-old has joined Hibs on a two-year contract after a season at Stockport, where he played five times. Smith joined County from Forest where he made 54 appearances and also featured on loan spells with Mansfield and Barnsley.

Head coach David Gray said: “He is a player with good experience playing at a high level in the English Championship and has strong pedigree and high standards having spent over 20 years at Nottingham Forest. He will provide healthy competition with Joe (Bursik) and Max (Boruc) in the goalkeeping department and we are all excited to work with him.”

Wollacott earlier left to sign for Sky Bet League One side Crawley. The 27-year-old former Swindon and Charlton player made eight appearances after joining Hibs last summer.

 

Leeds United could be about to enter a five-way transfer battle for a highly-sought after attacker this summer.

The Whites, Celtic, Ipswich Town, West Ham and Everton are all said to have been ‘credited with an interest’ in a deal for one of the most prolific players in England over the last 12 months.

Marquee additions to their front-line are likely to be hot on the agenda at Elland Road in the coming weeks as speculation continues to grow on their big-name stars.

Crysencio Summerville is wanted by Rennes, Chelsea and a host of other clubs, while his best friend Wilfried Gnonto is the subject of a 10 way transfer fight too.

The Denmark No1 has penned a one-year deal at Parkhead, with the option of extending it by another after his debut campaign. It has been in the works over the past week or so and the 37-year-old completed a medical yesterday before jetting out to the USA to meet his new teammates.

Official confirmation came from the Hoops’ social media this evening and the man himself is delighted. The Leicester City Premier League and FA Cup winner worked with Brendan Rodgers at the Foxes and that has been one major factor in his decision to come to Scotland, where he previously played on loan for Falkirk.

But the club itself was also a massive sell. Schmeichel insists Celts are a “proper club” and he’s ready to “follow in the footsteps of giants.”

Responding to the confirmation, he tweeted: “A dream come true to sign for a club with such a rich legacy as @celticfc. Excited to be part of this historic club and follow in the footsteps of giants. A new journey starts, can’t wait to get to work.”

Schmeichel also told the club website: “I am absolutely delighted to join Celtic and can’t wait to get started. The Dane has signed a one-year deal with the Parkhead club.

Schmeichel is travelling to the USA to join up with his new teammates as they prepare for the new season, and will be reunited with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who he played under for three years at Leicester City.

The 37-year-old is an experienced replacement for Joe Hart, who retired at the end of last season. Schmeichel joins the club just days after another goalkeeper was signed, with 22-year-old Finland international goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo joining on a five-year contract from Aston Villa.

“I am absolutely delighted to join Celtic and can’t wait to get started,” Schmeichel said.

“Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success. Celtic is what football is all about.

The goalkeeper spent 11 years at Leicester, playing more than 400 games, winning the Premier League and playing in the Champions League.

After leaving the English side two years ago, he spent a season at Nice and then moved to Anderlecht, where he played last season before becoming a free agent at the end of his one-year contract.

Schmeichel has 105 caps for Denmark and has played at both the World Cup and the European Championships.

Celtic could perfectly replace Oh by signing £8.5m star

Celtic enjoyed a relatively decent season last time out as Brendan Rodgers lifted two domestic trophies in his first year back in the dugout at Parkhead.

The Northern Irish boss came in to replace Ange Postecoglou, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League, last summer and won the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup.

However, the Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, finishing bottom of their group, and they could be set to aim for more success in Europe to go alongside domestic success next term.

Changes to the squad could help the Scottish giants to push on in the continent and the forward department has already seen some alterations this summer.

Adam Idah spent the second half of last season on loan from Norwich City and the Hoops are reportedly continuing talks to sign him on a permanent deal, having already had an offer of £4m plus add-ons turned down.

The Scottish Premiership champions have also allowed one of their senior strikers from last season to move on this month as Hyeon-gyu Oh was sold to Genk.

As you can see in the table above, only four Celtic players underperformed their expected tally by more than the South Korean dud, who was behind Kyogo Furuhashi and Idah in the pecking order in his final few months at the club.

The biggest issue for Oh was that he did not offer much outside of scoring goals and that meant that his wasteful finishing made him a liability for the side.

In the Premiership last season, the right-footed marksman failed to create a single ‘big chance’, did not register any assists, and only made 0.3 key passes per game across 20 appearances, which shows that he offered very little, if anything at all, as a creative threat.

Oh also lost 58% of his ground duels and 60% of his battles in the air in those 20 league outings, which shows that opposition defenders got the better of him in physical contests more often than not.

Taking these statistics into account, Celtic played a blinder to make a £2m profit on him as his performances on the pitch did not suggest that he was worth more than they paid for him, as the forward struggled physically and technically.

Rodgers could, now, perfectly replace the £4.5m sale by dipping into the market to sign one of the club’s reported targets before the end of the summer transfer window.

Celtic’s interest in Danish sensation

The Scottish giants reportedly have a long-standing interest in Brondby centre-forward Mathias Kvistgaarden, and they already know how much he would cost.

Back in June, Austrian outlet VICTAURI, as relayed by the Daily Record, claimed that the Hoops target had a price tag of €10m (£8.4m) this summer.

The report stated that RB Salzburg are also eyeing up a possible move for the Danish sensation and that they had already sent scouts to watch him in action.

However, the Bundesliga side were not willing to pay the £8.5m transfer fee required for him at the time, which meant that they did not press ahead with a deal for his services.

This means that the door could still be open for the Hoops to swoop in to bring him to Parkhead as the dream replacement for Oh in Glasgow next season.

Why Mathias Kvistgaarden would perfectly replace Oh

Being a back-up striker option, at least initially, is a hard sell for players and a difficult position for Celtic to fill, particularly if they also sign Idah from Norwich to join Kyogo in the striker ranks at Parkhead.

However, it could be sold to Kvistgaarden as an opportunity for him to prove himself and potentially earn a move to a major league in Europe, whilst winning trophies and playing European football.

At the age of 22, he is younger than Oh and seven years younger than Kyogo, which means that the talented gem could come in as the long-term heir to the Japan international.

This suggests that Kvistgaarden would be perfect for the role that the South Korean dud vacated as a young back-up striker with the potential to emerge as a key figure for Rodgers in the future.

His statistics for Brondby in the Danish Superliga also suggest that he could come in as a big upgrade on Oh, in terms of what he offers on and off the ball, as he enjoyed what talent scout Jacek Kulig described as a “superb season”.

Martin Dubravka’s Newcastle United future remains in doubt as one possible suitor, Scottish champions Celtic, focus their transfer attention elsewhere.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been one of many contenders to win the race for the Slovakian’s signature as Eddie Howe embarks on a revamp of his goalkeeping department on Tyneside. Other suitors linked with Dubravka include Southampton, clubs in Saudi Arabia’s top flight and Bundesliga sides.

Celtic, however, have this week secured the signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, landing the 22-year-old on a five-year deal. Now, attention appears to have turned to signing former Leicester City stopper Kasper Schmeichel.

Rodgers worked with the 37-year-old at the King Power Stadium and a reunion is on the cards after he left Anderlecht this summer. Schmeichel is expected to undergo a medical in Italy before linking up with Celtic on their pre-season tour of the United States.

A double signing in between the sticks will likely leave no room for Dubravka‘s arrival, paving the way for another side to swoop in and seal a deal for the former Manchester United loanee. The goalkeeper is currently on holiday after his Euro 2024 campaign with Slovakia and wants to speak with Eddie Howe before making a decision on his future.

“I have no idea [if I will stay at Newcastle]. I have seen they are talking with other goalkeepers,” Dubravka told the Daily Mail after exiting the competition. “I need to speak with the manager first. What is the plan for me? What is my future? I don’t know if they want me to stay or not. It is difficult for me, because I have been focussed on my job with the national team.”

Newcastle have already bolstered their goalkeeping ranks this summer with Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy arriving to offer support to Nick Pope. Mark Gillespie also penned a new contract earlier this summer.

Dubravka is subsequently expected to make way, with his agent admitting earlier this year that a new challenge may be sought after Euro 2024.

The Hoops have bolstered their goalkeeping department with Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo so far this summer, but more arrivals are expected. Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo are two they are on the prowl for, and Mjallby points to Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers as perfect transfer examples.

With both joining in the £6-£7m price bracket – one since being sold for £25m to Al Ittihad and the other a mainstay of the team – the former defender and coach reckons it shows that market can unlock benefits for boss Brendan Rodgers. With the success of the last three seasons in mind, he reckons they’ll be keen to use the window as a chance to widen the gap between themselves and Rangers.

Mjallby told the Sunday Post: “There are five or six weeks of the window still to go and I expect some really good reinforcements to be added. I’ve no idea what the budget is for players this summer but I would expect it to be a really healthy one.

“It could well be Brendan is able to look at the market for players in the region of £6 million or £7 million. When you think the club signed Cameron Carter Vickers and Jota for that kind of money then you know the quality that’s out there.

“Also, I think that players in that price range are not too different from some players at £15 million. But winning titles and trophies must never be taken for granted. That’s why more new signings are required.

“Celtic will want to build on the success of the last three seasons and make sure Rangers don’t get anywhere near another title for years to come.
