Asked about the importance of Abada’s abilities to the Celtic set-up, Wilson said: “Since his debut he has been. He scored on his debut and he never stopped from there.

“He’s like any winger. Sometimes it can be hit and miss on the ball. Everyone’s obsessed with stats these days and what can wide players and front players produce?

“He’s right up there in terms of assists and goals, so there’s no doubt any team would miss him. So he will come in and that’s been a position that’s been chopped and changed this season.

“Yang was given a go out there, a whole list, James Forrest brought back in and Mikey Johnston as well. None have really stood out. Even when [Daizen] Maeda came back and played there, he looked a bit rusty. No doubt a fit Abada just comes straight back into that starting eleven.”

It’s not just Abada who missed matches during the gruelling first-half of the term. Rodgers was without more key stars for a host of big games since the campaign kick off. Midfielder Reo Hatate has been absent for large chunks with hamstring issues.

Star centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers has been pushed onto the sidelines for important matches with Alistair Johnston and Maeda amongst other vital squad members who have been stuck on the sidelines at various stages.

With some of the replacements unable to consistently reach the levels of the recognised stalwarts, Celtic stuttered at times and suffered back-to-back Premiership defeats for the first time in 10 years when losing to both Kilmarnock and Hearts last month.

But the key men are back for the second push towards the run-in. Although off to the Asian Cup with Japan, Maeda and Hatate have regained their fitness.

This insinuation being that Collum can not officiate a Rangers game fairly, this request/leak was enough for a torrent of bigotry and prejudice on social media and fan forums. Images and videos of Willie Collum performing a reading at a Catholic mass were circulated by Rangers fans, purportedly as ‘Exhibit A’ to argue he officiates Rangers games with bias.

A year earlier Collum denied what looked to be a stonewall penalty to Celtic in the reverse fixture at Ibrox. Observable reality doesn’t show a pattern of bias, it shows a referee not very well equipped to do his job; the distinction is important. Nearly every SPFL club has had issues with Collum over the years.

This episode is not isolated but indicative of a deeper, more insidious issue, one that Andrew Smith poignantly addressed in his article on Rangers’ ‘superiority syndrome’ and anti-Catholic bigotry. Smith shed light on the entrenched sense of entitlement and bigotry that has long been cultivated within certain segments of the Rangers fanbase.

It’s time for a collective effort to challenge and change the narrative, to ensure that our game isn’t tainted by hatred and prejudice. The call is clear: It’s time for Rangers, and indeed all involved, to step up and be the change that is desperately needed.

This article will more than likely be dismissed as mere ramblings from a Celtic page by a non-practicing Catholic writer aiming to take potshots at rivals, but that’s far from the truth.

The call for transparency in Scottish football, including Rangers’ demands, is welcome. However, the line is drawn when officials are put in precarious situations where their faith influences debates over on-field decisions. It’s about fairness and integrity, not rivalry.

The more transparency we have, the less room for ambiguity going forward for all clubs, not just Celtic and Rangers. This ensures a level playing field where decisions are made clear and accountability is upheld, fostering a healthier, more respectful football environment for everyone involved.

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt has reportedly been attracting interest from Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers.

The 21-year-old’s progress has stalled since his breakthrough 2021/22 campaign at Elland Road and he has made just six Championship appearances this season.

He has faced stern competition in the forward department and has also had injury issues. Like teammate Charlie Cresswell, he does not appear to be at the forefront of Daniel Farke’s mind.

Leeds’ relegation to the Championship failed to open up a path into the picture for Gelhardt and a departure could potentially kickstart his career.

Gelhardt was recruited by Leeds back in 2020, having shown plenty of promise while cutting his teeth at Wigan Athletic. He starred for the Whites at under-23 level before being integrated into the senior set-up under Marcelo Bielsa.

“Whether you are a young player at Celtic coming through the ranks, or just a young player or an experienced player, the one thing that this club teaches you is that you have to win. You have to win at every level. If you don’t have that feeling of winning, you crave it. It is like a drug. You always need it. It gives you a great grounding.

“If you do happen to move on from Celtic to pastures new then players quickly find out that there are not many clubs like it. The demands that are placed on Celtic players are incredible. In my opinion, the future of Owen Beck is bright. That he is going to play for the Liverpool first team in the second half of the season shows how good he is.

A recent report from DaveOCKOP has suggested that Celtic and Rangers are both interested in taking Beck on loan for the remainder of the campaign. With Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas currently out injured, Jurgen Klopp might have chosen to bring Beck back to Anfield to provide cover at left-back, rather than to find him a new temporary deal away from the club.

In my view, we witnessed a clear punishable handball offence. Such incidents are notoriously difficult for referees to detect, and thus the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system is tasked with reviewing all decisions in the penalty area.

Had the penalty been awarded on the field, it would have been subsequently overturned once VAR reviewed the Attacking Phase Possession (APP).

Since no initial award was made, VAR would have examined the play; if VAR determined a penalty was warranted, they would have also reviewed the APP to ascertain any offside positions. To prevent any misunderstanding, an on-field review by the referee would be necessitated to make the final call. If the referee on review agreed with the penalty, they would then highlight the offside to reset play accordingly.

If, however, the referee concluded that no penalty occurred, the game would resume from the point of interruption. Admittedly, this process can seem laborious, but it exists to ensure clarity in the decision-making process.

In essence, VAR did not believe a penalty was due. The later release of an offside image served to justify the decision not to intervene. Ultimately, it seems the correct decision was made.

A point of clarification: if no offside had occurred in the APP and a penalty had been given, it would not constitute a cautionable offence. It certainly wouldn’t be grounds for a second yellow card for handball, contrary to what some might argue.

The media quickly picked up the narrative set by Rangers, running with it, thereby amplifying the club’s discontent. The demands for audio, despite knowing it would be due to them anyway after the 22nd round of fixtures, and the subsequent meeting with the SFA, were steps in a dance of deflection and obfuscation.

The narrative took a darker turn when it was leaked that Rangers had requested Collum not officiate their games again, not coming from Rangers themselves but their lap dogs in fan media.

This insinuation being that Collum can not officiate a Rangers game fairly, this request/leak was enough for a torrent of bigotry and prejudice on social media and fan forums. Images and videos of Willie Collum performing a reading at a Catholic mass were circulated by Rangers fans, purportedly as ‘Exhibit A’ to argue he officiates Rangers games with bias.

A year earlier Collum denied what looked to be a stonewall penalty to Celtic in the reverse fixture at Ibrox. Observable reality doesn’t show a pattern of bias, it shows a referee not very well equipped to do his job; the distinction is important. Nearly every SPFL club has had issues with Collum over the years.

This episode is not isolated but indicative of a deeper, more insidious issue, one that Andrew Smith poignantly addressed in his article on Rangers’ ‘superiority syndrome’ and anti-Catholic bigotry. Smith shed light on the entrenched sense of entitlement and bigotry that has long been cultivated within certain segments of the Rangers fanbase.

As Andrew Smith rightly pointed out, the media, authorities, and society at large must also play their part. There can be no more turning a blind eye or deaf ear to the issues at hand. It’s time for a collective effort to challenge and change the narrative, to ensure that our game isn’t tainted by hatred and prejudice. The call is clear: It’s time for Rangers, and indeed all involved, to step up and be the change that is desperately needed.

This article will more than likely be dismissed as mere ramblings from a Celtic page by a non-practicing Catholic writer aiming to take potshots at rivals, but that’s far from the truth.

The call for transparency in Scottish football, including Rangers’ demands, is welcome. However, the line is drawn when officials are put in precarious situations where their faith influences debates over on-field decisions. It’s about fairness and integrity, not rivalry.

The more transparency we have, the less room for ambiguity going forward for all clubs, not just Celtic and Rangers. This ensures a level playing field where decisions are made clear and accountability is upheld, fostering a healthier, more respectful football environment for everyone involved.

Boost for Rodgers as Celtic make aggressive January call on Matt O’Riley

Bringing in a striker has become a priority for the Hoops and their need is exacerbated by the fact that Kyogo Furuhashi, Oh Hyeon-gyu and Daizen Maeda could all head off to represent their respective nations on Asian Cup duty. Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Fabio Silva is believed to have been offered on loan as a potential short-term solution to the Scottish Premiership champions’ conceivable shortage of frontmen and it remains to be seen whether the Portugal Under-21 international will move to Parkhead.

Celtic “advance” in Jung negotiations

As per reports from South Korea, cited by The Daily Record, Celtic have managed to “advance” in negotiations with Gwangju midfielder Jung Ho-Yeon, who was scouted by Hoops’ chiefs in the summer transfer window.

The Hoops have previously dipped into the South Korean market to recruit Yang Hyun-jun and Oh and could now be set to return to familiar territory for the 23-year-old midfielder.

Speaking to local media, Gwangju manager Lee Jung-Hyo detailed the latest on the situation, stating: “Jung Ho-Yeon is currently in talks to advance to Europe from Gwangju, but still have a long way to go. If you go to Europe now, you are bound to end up in a clumsy situation. It is wise to prepare well like Cho Gue-sung (who signed for Midtjylland last summer) and choose the team and league well.”

Labelled a “prospect” by Asian football expert Dario Focardi, the South Korea Under-23 international has gone on to make 34 appearances in 2023, registering two goals and three assists (Jung statistics – Transfermarkt).

Celtic will need to attract quality reinforcements if they are to retain their Scottish Premiership title and Jung looks like a midfielder who could add a different dimension to Rodgers’ engine room.
