Sky Sports canceled an interview with Andy Burnham in which he demanded that the Premier League rescind their 10-point penalty against Everton.

The Greater Manchester mayor and Gwladys Street season ticket holder was approached by the broadcaster before of the Toffees’ 0-3 defeat against Manchester United at Goodison Park on Sunday – but the film was not shown.

Former Cabinet Minister Andy Burnham, an ardent critic of the competition’s contentious decision to withhold 10 points from the ailing Merseyside club for financial rules violations, now wants to know why.

‘I’m not sure why that wasn’t televised, and I’d need an explanation,’ he told Mail Sport. ‘I don’t expect third parties to dictate what I can and cannot say as a former Cabinet Minister.’

Sky Sports did not display footage of a plane flying above the Etihad Stadium during the televised match between Manchester City and Liverpool, which was paid for by disgruntled Everton fans, on Saturday. It hoisted a banner that read ‘Premier League = Corrupt’.

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester and an Everton fan, was interviewed by Sky Sports and asked the Premier League to remove the Toffees’ points deduction.

Although the subject was mentioned with Sean Dyche, Mauricio Pochettino, and David Moyes, Sky reporters covering the Friday manager press conferences were ordered not to inquire about Everton.

According to insiders, those covering the Sunday match at a tense Goodison Park for Sky were also reminded of their ‘editorial obligations’ before Burnham’s interview for Sky Sports News was canceled.

According to Sky sources, the change was made in the aftermath of Terry Venables’ death and the accompanying shift in editorial direction.

They also claim that they did not dial down the level on Everton fans’ numerous, loud, and profane anti-Premier League shouts during the game because they were not loud enough to warrant a change in the output.

Burnham, on the other hand, is unimpressed. ‘There appears to be a larger picture here, with Evertonians’ sentiments spoken at the game being muted as well,’ he continued. ‘I find it all quite unsettling. They’ve taken away our points. It can’t be right to deny Evertonians our freedom to speak, can it?’

Burnham has accused the Premier League of abusing the process and believes the punishment, which has dropped Sean Dyche’s club into the relegation zone, should be reversed.

He wrote to the Premier League’s chair and the secretary of state for culture, media, and sport, accusing the league of regulatory misconduct for attempting to implement a punishment policy tailored to Everton’s situation midway through the investigation.

Burnham said the’silence’ of Everton supporters as ‘very worrying.’

Burnham, who spoke on Sophy Ridge’s Sky News show on Monday, also said that they are using Everton as a “pawn” to prevent the creation of an independent football regulator.

Around 38,000 pink cards with the Premier League emblem and the word ‘corrupt’ were handed and held aloft by Everton fans during the game on Sunday.

The situation arises at a potentially sensitive time for broadcasters, as the Premier League invited tenders for UK rights from 2026 in October. The deadline for bids is this Friday, with an announcement on successful offers expected before the end of the year.

A Sky Sports spokesperson said: ‘Sky Sports has covered this news story extensively across our TV and digital channels, taking a fair and balanced approach to our reporting as always.’
