FSG interviewed a former Manchester United and Everton striker for the position of Liverpool manager.

Mark Hughes, a former Premier League manager, has disclosed that he was previously considered for the Liverpool position.

Hughes has spent more than a decade in control of Premier League clubs, most notably Manchester City as they began to make marquee signings. The former Wales manager also guided Blackburn Rovers to Europe before suffering relegation with QPR, Stoke City, and Southampton.

As a manager, the 60-year-old was a fixture in the Premier League for more than a decade. Hughes, on the other hand, has disclosed that his coaching career could have taken a completely other path after confessing that he was interviewed for the Liverpool post when Roy Hodgson was fired in January 2011.

Surprisingly, Hughes had succeeded Hodgson at Fulham and was on track to lead the west London team to eighth place in the league in his first season. His tenure at Craven Cottage could have been cut even shorter if the Reds had chosen the ex-Manchester United and Everton striker over rehiring Liverpool great Kenny Dalglish.

“I once had an interview for the Liverpool job, I don’t think that’s well-documented,” Hughes said on Sam Allardyce’s No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

“I believe Kenny decided he wanted to be a manager again.” Maybe the candidates weren’t the best, and that’s why I didn’t come any closer. I had a meeting with people at Liverpool, and I think it would have been more shocking than my obtaining the Man City job.”

Hughes’ most recent management job was with League Two side Bradford City in February 2022, following an extended period of unemployment. The Bantams made the play-offs last season, but Hughes quit in October after a dismal start to this season.
