Peter Grant doubts Celtic will sign striker with 12 goals this season, makes Giorgos Giakoumakis claim

Brendan Rodgers might lose Celtic’s striker duo Kyogo Furuhashi and Hyeongyu Oh in January to compete in the Asian Cup games.

Even with the duo in the Celtic side, the team has been finding it tough, as proven by the recent back-to-back defeats in the Scottish Premiership.

Not just the team’s recent form, but the possible absence of the above duo has only escalated talk of Celtic needing to sign another striker in the January transfer window.

Aberdeen hitman Bojan Miovski has been a man regularly mentioned, but Peter Grant is unsure about his possible arrival next month, as he told Go Radio.

It’s not easy doing transfer business during the middle of the campaign, especially for a player who is probably Aberdeen’s best and most important player on paper – he has 12 goals in all competitions this season.

There does seem to be interest from Celtic’s side, it’s now a case of whether that is taken to the next level and enquiries are made.

Even in this current form, Kyogo Furuhashi is Celtic’s main number nine, with Hyeongyu Oh as the backup as he tries to play the role that Giorgos Giakoumakis did ever so well.

Celtic’s January push for a striker

“I don’t know, this window is difficult for anyone to move,” said Grant about signing Miovski. “Celtic are talking about getting people out first.

“I think that has a lot to do with it, getting people out because they aren’t going to bring more people in if you have got more people still there. You need to make that space. I think that’s important.

“I know we will need a striker if the boys go away to the Asia Cup, so they do need a striker. You have to say to yourself, is this the challenge we are putting down? Is it a top-line striker who needs to challenge Kyogo and Oh?

“Then when they come back, it’s three people fighting for one position. We know that’s what happened with Giakoumakis, that’s why the dummy came out and he wanted to leave quickly.”

Not easy doing work in January

The issue here is that it now seems as though Rodgers needs players coming in next month, rather than, you could do with x, y and z players.

Even if the powers that be in the Celtic boardroom push the boat out – and they are going to need to after the farce of Hearts – then it doesn’t necessarily mean players will join because of the time of year it is.

But some form of action needs to be taken because fans aren’t happy and the manager seemingly wants proven stars through the doors.

Yes, the past few weeks haven’t been great for the team. But the title is still in Celtic’s hand. No more dropped points. Beat Rangers on December 30. And the team going into the New Year top of the table.
