West Brom latest: Mikey Johnston/Celtic update, Jed Wallace on Corberan, Shane Long makes Dike comparison

A round up of the latest West Bromwich Albion news.

With the international break upon us, West Bromwich Albion have been afforded a rare break in their pursuit of the Championship play-off spots this week.

With the likes of LeedsLeicester, and Ipswich well ahead, any automatic promotion hopes at this stage are not realistic. However, with the Baggies currently sitting fifth in the division, finishing inside the top six and getting a shot at promotion via Wembley is a real possibility.

As you can see above, Corberan’s side are eight points clear of seventh-placed Hull City, meaning West Brom will really fancy their chances.

Putting aside the current league table, though, despite it being the international break, the Baggies news has continued to roll in, some of which we have discussed below.

Mikey Johnston/Celtic update

One strand of West Brom news in recent days is regarding Mikey Johnston, currently on loan at The Hawthorns from Scottish giants Celtic.

The 24-year-old Irish international has made 10 Championship outings for the Baggies since his arrival in the winter transfer window, scoring six goals in those matches.

In potentially good news for West Brom, it now appears Celtic could be willing to sell the player permanently this summer.

As per Chris Dunlavy in the Football League Paper (p10, 24/03), via West Brom News, the Hoops are willing to sell, although their asking price will depend on how many clubs come in for him.

Dunlavy predicts that the Baggies will not be the only side interested in taking Johnston permanently.

Wallace on Corberan

In further Baggies news, midfielder Jed Wallace has been discussing club boss Carlos Corberan and the play-offs.

Corberan has previous play-off experience, having came close to promotion in 2021/22 with Huddersfield Town, guiding the Terriers to Wembley only to be beaten in controversial fashion by Nottingham Forest.

Wallace does not believe that experience gives Corberan the edge, because he does not believe Corberan could not be any more prepared.

“I don’t think he could have more of an extra edge if he tried,” Wallace explained, via BirminghamLive.

“His motivation is insane. I agree, Huddersfield were unlucky in that game. For me, he’s a top manager and I don’t think anyone deserves the chance to manage in the league above more than he does. We know there’s a lot of football to play but if there’s a manager you’d want in a play off campaign.

“He’ll probably watch every single game the other teams in the play-offs have watched in the last two years and we’d have the perfect plan for it – he’s the manager to have when you enter the crunch time of the season. It’s impossible not to go with him – and you can see that.

“You have every opportunity to play well here, because of the staff we have – the manager , the medical staff, the chefs, they go above and beyond for us. We get every chance to play well as an individiual and a team – you’re not always going to be at the top of your game, but you can see how hard we work at our game.”

Shane Long makes Dike/Lukaku comparison

Last but not least, former Baggies striker Shane Long has been discussing the current squad at the Hawthorns.

As well as discussing the likes of Grady Diangana, Mikey Johnston, John Swift and Jed Wallace, Long also turned his attention to Daryl Dike and his recent injury, comparing him to one of his former teammates.

“It’s such a shame to see Daryl Dike out again with another long-term injury; he reminded me a little bit, actually, of Romelu Lukaku.” Long explained to Ladbrokes Fanzone, via BirminghamLive.

“I played against him when he was at Barnsley and he’s such a tough opponent; a great goalscorer who, once he gets going, is so hard to stop. But with those big legs and that power and speed, comes injuries.

“Hopefully Dike’s injury is something the players can rally around, and even use as motivation for the rest of the season; you know, do it for him… make sure he’s returning to fitness as a Premier League player.”

Adam Idah’s subtle Celtic tweak gets Ireland boss giddy as Brendan Rodgers finds ‘key’ to unleashing the beast

Idah is in form for Celtic and Stephen Kenny says Brendan Rodgers’ work with the striker is reaping rewards.

Adam Idah speaks to Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers is the ideal man to take Adam Idah up a gear – and Stephen Kenny reckons he’s done it already.

The Norwich striker joined Celtic on loan in January and while there were some grumbles about the deal, many feeling it was a panicky last-minute addition at the end of a window that failed to deliver, he has impressed so far. Idah has five goals in nine games including key braces against Hibs and Motherwell while his arrival has also brought the best out of Kyogo, who appears to be rejuvenated by the competition.

Idah was picked by Ireland boss Stephen Kenny for their March internationals and after he came off the bench against Belgium on Saturday, he could be in line for a start against Switzerland on Tuesday night. And his international gaffer is already seeing a big difference in him after just a few months working with Rodgers at Parkhead.

James Forrest has Celtic value beyond minutes as Joe Ledley sees title advantage in gradual transformation

“There was criticism of his goals ratio at Carrow Road, but a lot of those appearances he made in the Premier League under Daniel Farke were substitute appearances, so those statistics can be very misleading,” Kenny told the Celtic Way. “He got into the first team there pretty early. He did very well for himself but he had to play second fiddle for a while to Teemu Pukki when they were in the Premier League.

“He’s been at Norwich for a few seasons and I think it is a fantastic opportunity for him. It is one that he has grasped straight away and from the outside looking in I am sure he is enjoying his spell in Glasgow.

“Tactically under Brendan (Rodgers), I know he will be getting the work put into his game for him to progress again. That is one of Brendan’s key strengths and whatever happens to Adam at the end of his loan spell he will certainly be a better player for it. I do feel with Adam that he can learn a lot at Celtic and improve under Brendan.

“He is hungry to do that and he has all the right attributes as I said. All that Adam needs to add to his game now is the consistency of performance and whatever transpires at the end of the season, so be it. Celtic are a fantastic club, a big club with fantastic traditions. Adam is now playing for a Celtic team that creates a lot of chances and it is no surprise to see him go up to Scotland and score goals.

“Adam has pace. He is very quick. He has a real physical presence and technically he is very good. He can press aggressively and he can run the channels. He can be a focal point of any team’s attack. He possesses all the right attributes that you need in a modern-day striker. He’s playing at a good level now for both club and country and progressing his career along nicely.

“I think Brendan is an ideal coach for a player like Adam at this time as he is still learning the game. Brendan will help Adam do that and contribute massively to his development. I’m sure Brendan will be working on improving Adam, especially with his movement in the box.”

James Forrest has Celtic value beyond minutes as Joe Ledley sees title advantage in gradual transformation

The Welshman saw Forrest emerge as a Parkhead boy but insists the man can still have a big say in Rangers title race.

James Forrest and Joe Ledley

Joe Ledley joined Celtic as James Forrest was starting out on his remarkable career of medal winning. Fast forward 14 years and the winger is still having an influence.

And Ledley reckons his old team-mate and pal can again be a key contributor as the champions attempt to see off the challenge of Rangers and claim their latest crown. 32-year-old Forrest has been a peripheral figure through most of the campaign with Brendan Rodgers trying a variety of wide options. However, no one at the club has more experience of winning titles than Forrest and he gave notice of his current wellbeing with a stunning strike for a goal in Celtic’s last outing against St Johnstone 10 days ago.

The attacker is now in line for another opportunity against Livingston on Sunday and Ledley says Forrest’s valuable nous will be key in the weeks ahead. The Welshman, who signed just a few weeks after Forrest made his top-team debut under the management of Neil Lennon against Motherwell in 2010, reckons there’s no substitute for know-how when it comes to the nitty-gritty stage of the term.

“What you do off the pitch and away from a matchday can be just as valuable to a squad and to a manager. It is all about setting standards and making sure that everyone is up to speed.

“Also making sure everyone around the group realises how much this title, and any title, means to the club. Seeing him come on the other day against St Johnstone and scoring is fantastic, but he can play a massive role off the park, too.

“I know he has been limited with minutes at the moment with some of the other wingers doing so well. Daizen Maeda for example has been doing well and scored a hat-trick recently.

“It is going to be difficult for him to get in there but once you get that chance, it is all about making an impact and Jamesy has shown for a long time he is capable of doing that.

“He just started to get more and more goals and assists and he has been unlucky in the last few years with injury. He has always produced for the club.”

With eight games to go, every moment is going to be crucial in the flag fight as the Old Firm go head to head for the honour. With two league derbies in the season remaining, the outcome of the crunch clashes at Ibrox on Sunday week and Celtic Park after the split may be pivotal.

Ledley, who will be back at his old club at the end of May to play in Celtic Legends versus Borussia Dortmund Legends charity match, knows what it takes to deliver in those matches having scored a winner for Lennon’s team as they defeated the Light Blues on their way to the title in 2011/12.

However, although he is aware the head-to-heads are going to hold major significance, the former midfielder is wary about all emphasis going onto the double header. Both Celtic and Rangers have spilled points in other matches this term to reach this point and there could be twists and turns away from the derbies.

Norwich City: Stephen Kenny on Adam Idah Celtic move

Adam Idah is in the goals at Celtic since a Norwich City loan move

Norwich City are in the box seat if Adam Idah and Celtic continue to hit it off.

The Canaries’ loanee notched five goals in seven league appearances for the Scottish Premiership title chasers ahead of linking up with the Republic of Ireland for friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland on Tuesday in Dublin.

Stephen Kenny gave the striker his international debut, and the former Irish boss believes the frontman is now answering his critics.

The 23-year-old is scheduled to return to Norfolk at the end of his loan deal, with no buy option for the Bhoys negotiated in his original January move.

Celtic have already been touted with a permanent bid in the summer after his impressive start in Glasgow, while there was also firm interest from Serie A in a player behind Josh Sargent and Ashley Barnes under David Wagner at the Championship promotion hopefuls.

“There was criticism of his goals ratio at Carrow Road, but a lot of those appearances he made in the Premier League under Daniel Farke were substitute appearances, so those statistics can be very misleading,” said Kenny, speaking to the Celtic Way. “He got into the first team there pretty early. Celtic captain Callum McGregor misses out on prestigious international award

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will be keen to use the international break to make sure his squad are match-ready for the season run-in.

With eight games to go, the Bhoys sit one point ahead of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race heading into their trip to Livingston on Sunday.

Of course, Rodgers also has the chance to see his side’s name inscribed on the Scottish Cup trophy for the second year running if they can negotiate a tricky tie against Aberdeen at Hampden in the last four, followed by a victory over Rangers or Heart of Midlothian in the final.

Nevertheless, the Irishman won’t be getting too ahead of himself, with his primary focus likely to be on ensuring his key men return for our final charge towards the finish line.

Later this week, when we travel to West Lothian, club captain Callum McGregor, Japanese midfielder Reo Hatate, and Republic of Ireland defender Liam Scales could all return for the contest against David Martindale’s outfit.

The former has been left out of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad due to his current injury status; however, as long as he is fit, McGregor is a shoo-in to be on the plane to Germany for EURO 2024.

Despite his absence, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston have linked up with the Tartan Army over the break, and the latter came on as a late substitute in a 4-0 defeat to the Netherlands last Friday [BBC Sport].

Unfortunately for McGregor, his Scotland teammate McTominay was the eventual winner. In truth, it would’ve been hard to deny the 27-year-old, given his seven-goal tally during EURO 2024 qualifying that helped Scotland to qualify for Germany [SFWA official website].

Nevertheless, our captain also played an important role in the nation’s success and will be expected to be a key man for club and country from now until the end of the season.

Hopefully, McGregor can pack his bags for Germany this summer off the back of lifting two pieces of silverware for his club!

Rodgers must finally unleash Celtic teen after 9.9/10 performance

The impressive forward caught the eye on international duty for his country last week.

Celtic went into the international break in first place in the Scottish Premiership after they beat St. Johnstone 3-1 in Glasgow in their last match.

The Hoops picked up all three points at Parkhead thanks to goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, James Forrest, and Nicolas Kuhn, which sent them to the top of the division after their rivals had their game postponed to a waterlogged pitch at Dundee.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side need to have a strong end to the 2023/24 campaign to avoid a trophyless season, after they were knocked out of the League Cup by Kilmarnock in August and finished bottom of their Champions League group.

This international break has provided a chance for some of Celtic’s crop of injured players to nurse their way back to fitness, and – in some cases – it has offered players who are not playing many first-team minutes an opportunity to catch the eye whilst playing for their country.

Hoops teen Rocco Vata is yet to establish himself as a regular in the senior side but Rodgers may now want to finally unleash the young gem after his phenomenal display for Ireland at U21 level on Friday.

Rocco Vata’s performance against San Marino

The 18-year-old magician lined up as one of the three attacking midfielders behind Sinclair Armstrong against San Marino in the U21 clash at the end of last week.

He recorded a sensational Sofascore rating of 9.9/10 for his performances in the match, with three goals scored and one chance created in a 7-0 thumping.

Vata’s first goal came after a series of errors at the back by the opposition defence. They failed to deal with Tony Springett’s initial shot and then a sliced clearance allowed the Celtic teen to volley the ball into an empty net.

As you can see in the clip above, his second goal came just after the hour-mark as the midfielder picked the ball up on the half-turn in the opposition’s half before brilliantly jinking past one defender before rifling a long-range effort into the bottom corner.

He completed his hat-trick in stoppage time at the end of the match after Bosun Lawal – his former B team teammate who is currently on loan with Fleetwood Town in England – fired a shot towards goal that the midfielder deflected in, much to the versatile defender’s frustration as he appeared to be gutted that Vata got a touch on the ball that seemed to be going in anyway.

The Celtic starlet, who also completed four dribbles during the game, showcased his lethal finishing at the top end of the pitch from an attacking midfield position, and Rodgers should take notice of that.

Daniel Kelly has had plenty of first-team opportunities in recent weeks and should now be moved over to make room for Vata to make his mark at senior level, or be played alongside his B team colleague.

Daniel Kelly’s season in numbers

The Scotland U19 international, who did not score or assist a goal in his side’s 3-1 defeat to Italy last week, has made five first-team appearances for the club this season.

His emergence for Rodgers’ men came after a return of one goal and zero assists in 15 appearances in the Lowland League, along with two goals in six UEFA Youth League outings as a central and attacking midfielder.

Last season, Kelly was predominantly deployed as a defensive or central midfielder and failed to contribute with a goal or an assist in 20 matches for the B team and Youth League side.

As you can see in the table above, the 18-year-old maestro has almost racked up 90 minutes of Premiership action for the Scottish giants this season, and has scored his first senior goal.

The teenage dynamo brilliantly curled the ball into the far corner from Hyun-jun Yang’s cross into the box in a 7-1 win over Dundee towards the end of February.

However, his aforementioned statistics at youth level do not suggest that the midfielder is likely to provide consistent quality as a scorer or creator of goals from the middle of the park.

Whereas, Vata’s form for Celtic B, and his exceptional performance for Ireland, shows that the potential is there for him to emerge as a lethal option for Rodgers in the final third.

Rocco Vata’s goalscoring quality

The 18-year-old star, who talent scout Jacek Kulig claimed has an “exciting” future ahead, has only played 11 minutes in one appearance in the Premiership this season.

His goalscoring exploits for the B team, however, suggest that there is a quality attacking midfielder to be unearthed for the Scottish giants.

Vata, who scored his first senior goal against Buckie Thistle in the SFA Cup earlier this year, has racked up 13 goals in 16 matches across the Lowland League and Challenge Cup this season.

The Irish youngster, who can play anywhere in the frontline, as an attacking midfielder, winger, or striker, has scored 14 goals in 24 games for the academy and first-team combined this term.

Meanwhile, Kyogo Furuhashi (15) is the only Celtic player with more than 11 goals for the senior side in all competitions during the 2023/24 campaign so far, which speaks to how impressive Vata’s scoring rate has been.

As you can see in the table above, Ange Postecoglou offered the youngster a chance to shine in the Premiership last season, and the teen starlet produced an eye-catching two ‘big chances’ created in just 44 minutes of action.

This suggests that Vata, who scored nine goals in 16 Lowland Leage appearances during the 2022/23 campaign, also has the quality to create high-quality chances for his teammates, whilst also being able to carry a big goalscoring threat of his own.

Therefore, Rodgers must finally unleash the Ireland U21 international, whether that is from the start or as a substitute on a regular basis, ahead of Kelly after his sensational performance during the international break, and due to his general form for the B team and first-team over the last 18 months.

Celtic should move against disgraceful lies spread by the Israeli media

Liel Abada reacts after missing a scoring chance. Celtic v Buckie Thistle, Scottish Cup, Celtic Park, 21 Jan 2024 Photo Stuart Wallace Shutterstock

The disgraceful lies spread by the Israeli media should be dealt with by the club. It’s libellous and it’s damaging. Time to act, Celtic…

Liel Abada may no longer be a Celtic player, but that still hasn’t stopped the many lies being spread about the reason why he felt the need to leave the club. The Israeli media are the main culprits, and the lies that they have published are both inaccurate and damaging to the good name of the Celtic supporters. It’s bewildering that these lies are still getting media attention despite the player himself thanking the football club and the supporters for his time at the club in his farewell speech.

Some guy by the name of Ben Green produced the biggest lot of nonsense on X not so long ago. He said the Liel Abada transfer was the most shameful football transfer of all time! All based on a false article by an Israeli sports outlet. Green has reposted this fabricated piece on many social media forms.

Green, who is based in Israel is some sort of ‘growth builder’ according to his Linkedln profile. He should add shameful liar to his resume. Ben Green doesn’t exactly have a big X following, but his lies reached all the right people. Yes the backward folk of this country who have no qualms about spreading lies about our football club to fulfil their own warped agenda.

Ironically the same folk are consumed with their own prejudices. Maybe folk such as Ben Green should do some research into our club, our identity, and why we were formed. Not to mention the many challenges a lot of us, our fathers and forefathers  have had to face over the past 100 years or so. I think they would be quite surprised.

Ben is a nobody just seeking attention, but his false accusations have been very damaging to the good name of our supporters, all aided and abetted by the lies of the Israeli media. Our football club needs to stand up to these propagandists and demand an apology and a retraction or threaten legal action. The supporters all know it’s a lie. The club know it’s all lies, even the Israeli media know it’s all a lie.

It’s time we took action and stopped these false smears. Unfortunately I don’t think our club have the backbone to do so.

Celtic Breaks into Top 20 European Football Clubs for Shirt Sales in Calendar Year

In an extraordinary achievement for Scottish football, Celtic FC has catapulted into the elite circle of the top 20 football clubs worldwide in terms of shirt sales for the year 2023. This remarkable feat is not just a testament to the club’s massive fanbase but also highlights the successful merchandise partnership with Adidas. Celtic’s inclusion in this prestigious list marks a milestone, showcasing the club’s global appeal and the thriving relationship with its kit manufacturer.

Celtic’s journey to the top echelons of global merchandise sales has been nothing short of spectacular. With €34 million in shirt sales, the club has outperformed numerous football giants and has become the only Scottish club to make it to the list. [ESPN]

Since the inception of their partnership in 2020, Adidas and Celtic have set new standards in football merchandise, blending innovative designs with the club’s rich heritage. The 2023 milestone is perhaps the best testament to what has been described as Celtic’s most fruitful merchandise partnership.

Celtic finds itself in illustrious company, rubbing shoulders with football’s elite in the merchandise sales league. The list is topped by Barcelona, with sales amounting to €179 million, followed closely by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Notably, Celtic’s inclusion signifies its status not just within Scottish football but on the global stage, being among renowned clubs from the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and beyond.

The bhoys’ significant achievement underscores the club’s position as having the largest fanbase in Scotland,. The iconic green and white hoops have become more than just a team uniform; they are a symbol of pride and history that fans around the world recognise.

The mutual benefits from this collaboration between Adidas and Celtic have been evident, raising anticipation about the potential renewal of their agreement. Although there has been no news on that front as of yet.

Brendan Rodgers speaks as Celtic continue exciting Lennoxtown initiative; draws on his journey

Celtic have confirmed details for the 12th instalment of their International Coaches Convention that is set to take place between April 10th and April 13th in Glasgow.

Brendan Rodgers will join a host of other keynote speakers at the event, which will offer ‘unprecedented’ behind-the-scenes access at Lennoxtown and our home, Celtic Park [Celtic FC official website].

Scottish FA and UEFA license holders will be able to purchase either two-day or four-day passes to the convention, with a plethora of theoretical and practical content being covered, including technical sessions, tactical development and sports science.

Ange Postecoglou took a leading role in the event last year, taking time out of his first-team duties to present work being carried out in conjunction with the Soccer Academy.

Once again, the four-day affair promises to be exciting for all involved, who will gain a unique insight into the internal workings of Celtic Football Club.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers speaks ahead of ICC event

Ahead of the ICC convention, Celtic boss Rodgers has taken time out of his busy schedule to sound his excitement ahead of the event, which he believes could be a vital tool for some of the coaches that will be present once the action gets underway.

He stated [Celtic FC YouTube]: “I think initially, you have to have that hunger to learn. You have to want to learn; I think coach education is there, but it’s taking up the responsibility and having that desire to want to improve.”

MORE CELTIC STORIES

“I think it’s a great thing that the club do, to put on an event which allows coaches at various levels and all various countries to attend.”

Taking inspiration from his own experiences in coaching, Rodgers added: “Now, I’m sat here at 51, I became a manager at 35. I don’t know how many games I’ve had, over 700 games.

“I’m certainly a different coach and manager now than when I got my first job at Watford, so those experiences — if you can help people— that’s key for the next generation of coaches.

“For me, in my career, I can only talk personally; it’s been huge, being able to meet different coaches, different people and finding out about the different facets of the game and talk about the different things and learn about the different things in your make up as a coach and a manager.”

The Irishman finished by saying: “You might pick up one thing from the few days that you’re here, which then enriches you in your coaching life.”

With proceedings set to kick off in a little over two weeks, learning from the likes of Rodgers and his staff will be an amazing opportunity for all attendees.

Dejected Craig Levein explains why he’s glad he doesn’t face ‘fantastic’ Celtic every week

Celtic’s 3-1 win over St Johnstone puts the pressure back on Rangers at the top of the table this afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side looked back to their best as they delivered a brilliant all-round performance that the Celtic fans have not seen for quite some time this season.

Their constant pressure at closing down the St Johnstone players and their attacking intent was reminiscent of the kind of football we witnessed under Ange Postecoglou.

And it was this type of performance that left St Johnstone manager, Craig Levein, admitting that he’s happy that he doesn’t need to face the Parkhead side every week.

Levein said [Sky Sports], “I thought without the ball we were pretty good. Whenever we did win it back, particularly in the first half, we just turned it over nearly every time probably doubling the amount of attacks that Celtic had through our own inadequacy to keep possession of the ball.

“And that just made it harder for us defensively. And if you can get periods of control in the game then what that means is that your defenders are constantly under pressure in here.

“Attack after attack after attack with players who it’s not as simple as just defending crosses, there’s a lot of different passes that are played in that created opportunities for the Celtic players and you fall asleep for a second and you find yourself in trouble.”

“But this isn’t a game that’s going to define our season. We’ve got a lot of matches to play that will involve many different types of mental problems for us.

MORE CELTIC STORIES

“This is a tricky place to come with a big pitch, a great surface and the movement Celtic have got is fantastic.

“And that was really tiring. For us. But that’s not what we’re facing every week.”

Watching the interview you could see the abject disappointment on Levein’s face in the tone of his voice as Celtic blew his St Johnstone team away.

As I said earlier, this was a performance that we have not seen from a Brendan Rodgers side for pretty much of the whole season.

Their attacking flair, particularly down the right flank with Nicolas Kuhn, was exceptional. The German winger is really starting to show the signs of the player that persuaded Rodgers to splash £3m on the German winger in January.

The only blot on Celtic’s performance was the fact that we conceded a poor goal that should have been dealt with much better by the back four.

But overall, as Levein admits, Celtic were fantastic yesterday and it’s just a pity that the international break has come when it has.

Because looking at what Brendan Rodgers’ side has delivered recently, barring the Hearts result, this team is growing more and more with confidence at the business end of the season and it has just made this title run-in all the more interesting for the Celtic fans.

Celtic news: Wyness shares Peter Lawwell transfer reveal that will surprise fans

Wayne Veysey

Former Aberdeen chief Keith Wyness has insisted chairman Peter Lawwell and his Celtic board have done “the right thing long-term” despite fan backlash over transfer spending.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Lawwell is a “canny operator” having dealt with him many times during his career.

Celtic’s only permanent signing in January was winger Nicolas Kuhn for a £3million fee – despite the club’s 2022-23 financial accounts showing £40million of profit and cash reserves of £67million.

The Hoops are also under pressure from Rangers in the race for the Scottish Premiership title race, with their Old Firm rivals moving two points ahead in recent weeks.

Peter Lawwell has ‘done the right thing for Celtic’, says Wyness

Football Insider detailed in February the huge fan discontent on social media about the lack of spending – with former Celtic forward Chris Sutton also slamming Lawwell’s statement on the issue.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I know Peter, I’ve dealt with him many times on player transfers and I’ve observed how he’s run Celtic.

“They’re very canny operators, and I think they’ve done the right thing long-term for Celtic.

“It’s always nice to have the resources available if you do have to make a big change and a new manager does come in. It’s great to have that luxury.

Join the Football Insider WhatsApp channel to get all our exclusives and the breaking transfer news FIRST.

“They made a judgement at the time, they thought they had spent enough to get success. It hasn’t proved to be the case – but with hindsight, it is easy to say that.

“In football, everything’s 50:50. 50% of fans will hate the decision, 50% of fans will love it – that’s just the way it’s always been.

“The season’s not finished, so we’ve just got to watch this space and see this great soap opera develop.”

Man Utd target £100m signing from Rangers’ Euro opponents as Arsenal ‘name price’ for ex-Celtic star

Arsenal have named their price for a former Celtic star as Manchester United are interested in a player who features for one of Rangers’ Europa League rivals.

A Benfica star is wanted by Man Utd.

It was a weekend to celebrate for Celtic and Rangers as they both progressed through to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup – but what is else current going on around Glasgow?

A former Celtic player, who now plays for Arsenal, has had a price tag slapped on him – meanwhile, Manchester United are interested in a star from Benfica, who Rangers will take on in the Europa League on Thursday.

Arsenal ‘name price’ for Kieran Tierney

Arsenal are looking to put on a ‘fire sale’ at the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming summer transfer window – and former Celtic defender Kieran Tierney could be one of several names on Mikel Arteta’s chopping block, according to a report from GIVEMESPORT.

The Gunners are hoping for bids in excess of £20 million for the 41-cap Scottish international. Tierney could return to his former club, but it is unclear if the Celts have this amount of money to spare. Additionally, Tierney could potentially make the jump to La Liga, following his enjoyable stint with Real Sociedad on loan this season. Additionally, Celtic will be owed 15% of the fee that Arsenal sell him for should they reach an agreement.

Manchester United interested in Benfica’s Joao Neves

Rangers are due to take on Benfica in the second leg of their exciting Europa League tie on Thursday – and one of Os Encarnados’ top stars, Joao Neves, is thought to be in the crosshairs of Premier League giants Manchester United.

This is according to a recent report featured in the Mail Online. The move to try and bring Neves to Old Trafford is believed to have been spearheaded by new minority owner Jim Ratcliffe – the Red Devils could put forth a offer as high as £100 million to try and snap up the young Portuguese starlet.

Priceless Maeda

I had a conversation a week ago along the lines of, “Daizen gives us lots of running, but not much else.” A player with speed as his most potent weapon is stifled against Scottish opposition.

Putting the ball in the net is the best counter to that concern. A player who produces a hat trick when his team mates most need him is priceless.

More of the same, Daizen.

Kit Loferski opened the scoring early with five minutes on the clock. Lucy Ashworth-Clifford, who was named in the starting line-up once again, sent a brilliant delivery into the box for Loferski to convert from close range.

Great to see Lucy Ashworth-Clifford back in the team after a long injury lay-off

Kit got a brace for herself a few minutes later with a beautiful finish. The American forward made a run across the front post and put the ball in the back of the net. She then had the chance to secure her hat trick as she cut in from the left just past the half-hour mark, but she couldn’t find the back of the net.

That didn’t mean we were without another goal before the break though, as with 42 minutes on the clock, a ball from Amy Gallacher found Jenni Smith, who put the ball in the bottom corner with a well-composed shot.

Smith scores and congratulates Gallacher for the assist

With the second half underway, the Celts were desperately searching for a fourth. It eventually came with 56 minutes gone as Shen Mengyu pounced on a loose ball and smashed it home.

Celtic weren’t done yet, with Caitlin Hayes getting in on the act. Maria McAneny sent a cross into the box and Hayes was there to meet it. She jumped up and headed beyond the goalkeeper to make it five.

Rounding off a decisive Scottish Cup performance, Murphy Agnew got on the end of a Menglu pass. The American rounded the goalkeeper and tapped it home, adding a sixth goal to Celtic’s tally for the afternoon.

And with that, our place in the last four was secured!

Speaking after the game, two-time goalscorer Loferski said: “Coming up here is a bit of a trek, but straight off the bus and onto the pitch, we couldn’t ask for a better performance! We put some goals in the back of the net and kept it out of our own. What more could you ask for.

🗣️ “We’re feeling good as a whole. We scored goals, and kept a clean sheet. So what more could we ask for?”

“We came out flying. For myself, I wish I could’ve kept that composure more consistent throughout the game but I’m happy with my performance, just not entirely satisfied.

“We’re really looking forward to that [going to Hampden]. It’s always a great experience for girls that have done it already but also for girls that haven’t. The atmosphere is amazing, and our fans make it that much better, so we’re looking forward to it.”

🗣️ “Obviously we are very happy to be through to the semi-final. We didn’t concede and keep scoring, so it’s a positive day!”

Elena Sadiku also reflected on the performance, saying: “We’re happy about going through to the semi-final. We didn’t concede any goals and we kept scoring. Standing here now, I wanted more goals, but the most important thing is that we’re through to the semi-finals, so mission accomplished.

Elena Sadiku enjoying her away day at Montrose. It was freezing!

“We were ready from the start and that’s something that we always talk about. We had fans travelling to Montrose, so we had to show how much we wanted it, not just for us but for the fans.

“Every day, we’re working every single day to get better, so it makes us happy that we’re doing what we’re training on. Hopefully, we can keep going like this.

“I’ve never been there [Hampden]. I know we have some good history there. We’re moving towards the end of the season but we’re happy that things are going our way. We hope we can keep building on this.”

We certainly got the job done yesterday as we continued our defence of the Scottish Cup. It’s good to see goals being scored by numerous players and to see some names returning to the starting line-up, most notably, LAC.

As we enter the final stages of the season, let’s hope that we can continue our good form with a win in the Glasgow Derby next weekend.

Before our next match though, we will find out who we will be facing in the semi-finals of the Women’s Scottish Cup. The draw will be made at half-time in the Greenock Morton vs Hearts tie, which is set to kick off at 19:45. Our opponent will either be Hearts, Spartans or theRangers.

Celtic carnage causes rubbernecking on night a roar about elsewhere sparks an onslaught – Keith Jackson

Six goals before the half-time whistle had reduced Dundee’s defence to a write-off in thumping win for the Hoops

CELTIC 7 DUNDEE 1 – BEST OF THE ACTION FROM PARKHEAD

If Celtic turned a corner in added time at Fir Park on Sunday this was the night they planted a foot back on the title accelerator.

Six goals before the half-time whistle had reduced Dundee’s defence to a write-off and that seemed perfectly fitting given their own journey to Glasgow’s east end included a breakdown just a few miles out from the scene of this car crash. Indeed it was difficult not to rubberneck at the carnage the champions were leaving in their rear-view mirror such was the extent of the damage being done to anyone daft enough to turn up in a dark blue shirt.

A seventh goal was added in the second half by youngster Daniel Kelly as Brendan Rodgers and his team roared out a message to their rivals that this season’s race has some distance left to go yet. Tony Docherty probably suspected it wasn’t going to be his night when the team bus clapped out somewhere along London Road, an hour or so before kick-off. The hosts had to come to the rescue by sending Celtic’s own coach to shuttle Docherty and his players safely into the ground. But it didn’t bode well.

Brendan Rodgers and Celtic players after Dundee big win

RELATED ARTICLES

Nor for the matter did the fact this midweek road trip south coincided with the return to Celtic’s starting line-up of Cameron Carter-Vickers, adding a bit of American steel to a defence that has been wobbling generously for almost everyone else since the turn of the year.

Not on this night though, despite all of the gloom that has descended around the place in recent weeks. Perhaps sensing the unusual lack of energy in the stands, Dundee went straight onto the front foot with two shots and a half hearted penalty claim within a 60-second blitz.

First, Jordan McGhee forced Joe Hart into a sharp flying save after Amadou Bakayoko had managed to play him in behind despite losing his footing in a tussle with Greg Taylor. From the corner that followed the ball ricocheted around the box and a couple of Dundee players screamed for a handball before it broke to Owen Beck whose deflected effort looped wide of Hart’s right-hand post.

The sight of all this activity in and around Celtic’s box popped a pin in what little atmosphere the crowd had mustered before kick-off.

But all that would soon change. First, after six minutes, Carter-Vickers got the spirits soaring when he climbed at the back post to meet Matt O’Riley’s sand wedge of a free-kick and smash a header into the roof of Trevor Carson’s net. But the roof really came off soon after when word filtered up the M77 of Kilmarnock’s opener against Rangers.

And from that moment, Dundee didn’t stand a chance out there. A second goal followed in 16 minutes when Alistair Johnston hit the byline to collect Yang’s pass and conjure a delightful cross for Adam Idah to head spectacularly home from five yards.

But this onslaught was only getting started. Three minutes later came the third when Taylor picked out O’Riley with a cross from the left and the Dane hurled himself at it to send a diving header in at Carson’s right-hand post. Dundee hadn’t been playing badly at all. But already they were entering a world of pain.

It intensified on the half hour mark when Daizen Maeda spun on a sixpence inside Dundee’s box, leaving Ricki Lamie for dead before swivelling on the same spot and curling a left-foot shot around Carson and into the net.

And it was 5-0 with 10 minutes to spare before the break when Lamie got his head on Johnston’s cross from the right but succeeded only in glancing it into the path of Taylor who stabbed it home as he raced in at the back post.

Even when Dundee thought they had stopped the bleeding with a goal from Curtis Main they were clobbered again – by a VAR review that showed the striker was marginally offside before crashing a superb shot past Hart. And before they made it into the sanctuary of the dressing room, they were six goals down.

Daniel Kelly celebrates after Celtic goal

Callum McGregor got in on the act, working a sharp 1-2 with Taylor on the edge of the box before wrapping his left boot around a shot that gave Carson no chance. And so the visitors headed in at the break giving serious consideration to commandeering Celtic’s bus and making a hasty retreat up the road. McGregor was allowed to go for a shower and take the rest of the night off, his place taken by youngster Daniel Kelly, 18.

Docherty made three changes of his own, replacing McGhee, Joe Shaughnessy and Malachi Boateng with Josh Mulligan, Aaron Donnelly and Mohamed Sylla – while praying for the punishment to end before things became any more excruciating.

It helped that Celtic were kind enough to take their foot off the gas, with Rodgers making three further changes on the hour when Kyogo Furuhashi, Stephen Welsh and Anthony Ralston were sent on for Idah, Carter-Vickers and Taylor.

No sooner had they arrived than youngster Kelly was sweeping home the seventh goal from 18 yards after connecting perfectly with a cut back from Yang to curl one inside Carson’s left-hand post.

He was very good’… Brendan Rodgers said one Celtic player was ‘fantastic’ in win over Dundee last night

What a win last night and, to be honest, I am still scratching my head at where that performance came from.

Now I know we got a glimpse of it in the second-half of the Motherwell win on Sunday but, jeez, not one Celtic supporter would have saw that coming last night.

seven-goal hammering of Dundee wipes out the goal-difference advantage Rangers had over us at the top of the league and even though they scraped to a 2-1 win at Kilmarnock, there will be nerves over at Ibrox when they heard of this result.

But what is most pleasing is that every single player in that Celtic team was superb. To a man, it is hard to pick fault in any of their performances.

But Brendan Rodgers reserved special praise for one player and it was one who the Celtic manager admits that was struggling at the start of the season.

Brendan Rodgers was loving Hyunjun Yang’s Celtic performance

The Celtic manager was full of praise for the South Korean last night and specifically mentioned the winger due to his lack of form earlier this season.

Yang looked like a player bereft of confidence when he arrived in Glasgow but last night, he was brilliant and Rodgers had no qualms in pointing that out.

MORE CELTIC STORIES

Rodgers said [BBC Radio Scotland], “I thought Yang was fantastic. Again, great to see him because earlier on in the season he had a problem with the young right wing back because he’s done really well against him.

“But I thought tonight he was very good. Inside, outside he was very creative.

“But overall, it was very pleasing that like I said, the manor of is always important.”

It certainly looks like Yang is starting to find the form that persuaded Celtic to splash out £2m for him in the summer.

And it couldn’t have come at a better time. The 21-year-old looks hungry and brave on the ball now and if he produces that kind of performance against Hearts on Sunday, you wouldn’t bet against the Bhoys coming away from Tynecastle with another three precious points.

Yang Praised For “Fantastic” Display By Brendan Rodgers; Huge Improvements Noticed

Celtic winger Yang has been rightly praised for his man-of-the-match performance in the Hoops’ dominant 7-1 win over Dundee on Wednesday night.

The South Korean internationalist was handed a deserved start after he made an impactful difference against Motherwell on Sunday. This evening, he repaid the faith manager Brendan Rodgers showed in him.

Soccer Football – Scottish Premiership – Rangers v Celtic – Ibrox, Glasgow, Scotland, Britain – September 3, 2023 Celtic’s Yang Hyun-Jun during the warm up before the match REUTERS/Russell Cheyne

Throughout, Yang terrorised opposition full-back, Owen Beck. He constantly ran at the Liverpool loanee who was linked with the Celts in January.

The 21-year-old set up teenage sensation Daniel Kelly for his first goal in senior football before being subbed off on 76 minutes. After the match, gaffer Rodgers heaped praise on Yang.

The boss noticed the improvements he had made since he last came up against Dundee and Beck: “I thought Yang was fantastic”, he said (BBC Sportsound).

“It was great to see him as earlier on in the season he had a problem with the young wing-back who did really well against him.

“I thought tonight he was very good. Inside or outside he was very creative.”

On Sunday at Tynecastle, Yang is assuredly in line for another start. The right-wing spot is currently his to lose and after his performance tonight, such a fact is understandable.

“It certainly wasn’t what I said to you!” Rodgers ends BBC row humorously

Brendan Rodgers made a rather amusing final remark in his post-match interview last night with Jane Lewis from BBC Radio Scotland after his side hammered Dundee 7-1 with seven different Celtic goalscorers at Celtic Park.

The two were involved in a media storm in a teacup controversy after the Celtic manager used the expression, ‘Good Girl’ at the end of a tense interview at Fir Park at the weekend. This was jumped upon by all sorts of vested interests while the two folk involved didn’t really get what the fuss was all about.

This evening Jane Lewis finished by asking what he’s said to his players that got the brilliant reaction this evening and Rodgers – quick as a flash joked, ‘well it wasn’t what I said to you!” The BBC journalist certainly appreciated the moment.

Here’s how the interview went this evening on a night where Celtic sorted out the goal difference deficit on theRangers who sneaked a 2-1 win down at Kilmarnock to maintain a two points advantage for now.

Cameron Carter-Vickers scores his team’s opening goal during the Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Dundee at Celtic Park on February 28, 2024.

Jane Lewis: Was it the high level of performance that pleased you the most tonight?

Brendan Rodgers: “Yes. We always look at the performance. You can see players starting to return and how that connects everything in our team. I thought the level of our football for large parts of that was really good.

The speed and touch-pass tempo was excellent. We created a lot of opportunities and what was really pleasing in the second half was that we didn’t get into our comfort zone. We still kept pushing and we were creative.

We had seven different goalscorers which was great as that shows what we want in the team as we need the whole team to contribute goals. Overall it was a fantastic performance and a great result for us.”

Jane Lewis: I know it is all about the squad but your starting eleven were bang on the money, weren’t they? They really set the tone.

Brendan Rodgers: “Yes. It is what has been missing for us all season that connection and the importance of players who have been out. If ever there was a night to demonstrate that it was tonight. Cameron coming back in just frees up other players in areas of the field. I thought Adam Idah was a great reference point for the team. His set-up play and threat when the ball came into the box was great. I thought Yang was fantastic. It was great to see him as earlier on in the season he had a problem with the young wing-back who did really well against him. I thought tonight he was very good. Inside or outside he was very creative. Overall it was very pleasing and the manner of it is always important.”

Adam Idah celebrates scoring his first goal at Celtic Park

Jane Lewis: You had the chance to make changes because you were so far ahead but the tempo did not go down. Nothing was disrupted. How pleasing an aspect was that for you?

Brendan Rodgers: “I said at half-time you can either do one or two things here you can applaud yourself and come in here at full-time and it is still 6-0 and you’d be disappointed. The players showed that drive and determination as we created other opportunities and their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves and we hit the crossbar. It was brilliant for young Daniel Kelly. It is so nice when you get a homegrown player as he has been here since he was eight years of age. I saw him in pre-season and I really like what he has. He has good physicality and he has an incredible attitude for a young player. It was just really about timing for him and to give him the chance to come in and he scored a really good goal.”

Daizen Maeda celebrates his goal with Matt O’Riley

Jane Lewis: There was great energy from the players but there was great energy from the crowd as well. You spoke about that in your pre-match interview and how important was it to see that back?

Brendan Rodgers: “It was very important. Celtic is a club that is all about the players, the manager and the supporters being together, Whoever the manager is. It is so important that you have that. Nights like that took me back to back to when I was first here. That feeling, that football, that level, that performance, that intensity, and everyone enjoying it. We are here to entertain the supporters and we are here to win. Celtic is very much a club about playing a level of football that gets the supporters excited and I think they were that tonight.”

Callum McGregor scores

Jane Lewis: Finally was that performance coming or did something spark it? Did you say something in midweek to get the players fired up for this match?

Brendan Rodgers: “It certainly wasn’t what I said to you!”

Green Brigade Release Troubling Footage

In what has become a contentious issue within the Scottish football over the years, the Green Brigade has raised serious concerns over the treatment of fans by police during their recent trip to Motherwell.

As Celtic faced off against the Fir Park club in an SPFL clash, reports of police heavy-handedness have marred the day with troubling footage and images emerging

The Green Brigade took to social media to express their alarm and dismay at the actions observed on Sunday, marking yet another chapter in what is described as a disturbing trend.

25th February 2024; Fir Park, Motherwell, Scotland; Scottish Premiership Football, Motherwell versus Celtic; Blair Spittal of Motherwell celebrates with his team mates in front of the fans after he shoots and scores to make it 1-0 to Motherwell

“Once again, Celtic fans were subject to dangerous police practices at Sunday’s match through the use of excessive force, police horses, and steel pens,” the statement began, laying bare the frustrations felt by many. The account detailed incidents where fans, including a young supporter, were allegedly subjected to undue force. One particularly harrowing account involved a young fan pinned to the ground by an officer, with additional officers exacerbating the situation, leading to the fan’s distress and claims of being unable to breathe due to the pressure applied to his neck.

ONCE AGAIN, CELTIC FANS WERE SUBJECT TO DANGEROUS POLICE PRACTICES AT SUNDAY’S MATCH THROUGH THE USE OF EXCESSIVE FORCE, POLICE HORSES AND STEEL PENS. THIS IS A PATTERN OF BEHAVIOUR THAT THE CLUB HAS DONE NOTHING TO ADDRESS DESPITE INCREASING CONCERNS OF FANS. PIC.TWITTER.COM/9DPMNS9X6W

— North Curve Celtic (@NCCeltic) February 27, 2024

Another separate incident, as reported, involved a young fan assaulted, resulting in severe physical injuries. These accounts are not just isolated incidents but are symptomatic of a broader issue of criminalisation and antagonism towards football fans, the GB argues.

There’s a growing sentiment that the current approach to policing fans not only undermines the rights of supporters but sows a culture of fear and antagonism, rather than ensuring safety and respect for all.

The core of the Green Brigade’s message is a call to action for Celtic Football Club. It’s a plea for the club to acknowledge its duty of care towards its supporters, who are the lifeblood of the club. The repeated instances of alleged heavy-handedness and the subsequent silence or inaction from those in positions of authority have only served to alienate a passionate and dedicated fan base.

This situation raises pertinent questions about the balance between security and respect for fan rights, the role of football clubs in advocating for their supporters, and the mechanisms in place for addressing grievances and ensuring accountability.

The starkness of the Green Brigade’s experiences and allegations cannot be ignored. They serve as a reminder of the need for dialogue, transparency, and reform in how football fans are treated, both by the authorities and by football clubs themselves.

Brendan Rodgers dealt more bad luck as Celtic man receives injury treatment, out for Dundee

Celtic fans finally have some positivity to work with following the Bhoys’ dramatic 3-1 victory over Motherwell last Sunday.

Republic of Ireland international Adam Idah is the man of the hour following his match-winning exploits, while the likes of Hyunjun Yang and Tomoki Iwata deserve great credit for their role in the comeback at Fir Park

Brendan Rodgers hailed the psychological impact of his side’s late heroics, stating post-match: “it was important for us to get the win today psychologically. There’s a story being written about this club, but we will write our own story.”

Nevertheless, there is no time to waste at Lennoxtown, with the challenge of Dundee making the trip through to Glasgow on Wednesday unlikely to be straightforward.

The Bhoys sit two points behind Rangers with 11 matches left to navigate this term and will be keen to keep the pressure on their rivals, who face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on the same night.

Everything can change in an instant, signifying that Celtic need to stay on their guard by ensuring they guarantee three points on home soil.

Celtic suffer yet another injury blow this season

Frustratingly, Celtic have suffered another injury blow, which has become a common theme of Rodgers’ second stint in charge at Parkhead.

According to The Daily Record, Polish defender Maik Nawrocki was unable to feature in training on Monday due to a leg issue, which the Bhoys are now looking to find out the full extent of amid the 23-year-old receiving intensive treatment.

Nawrocki is now out for the Dundee clash on Wednesday, which will leave Rodgers needing to assess his other defensive options ahead of facing Tony Docherty’s Dark Blues.

Last weekend, the former Legia Warsaw man lasted for 61 minutes before being replaced by Cameron Carter-Vickers, who came on to shore things up alongside Liam Scales for the last half hour [BBC Sport].

Maik Nawrocki’s frustrating Celtic career continues

Undoubtedly, big things were expected of Nawrocki at Parkhead following his £4.3 million move from Legia Warsaw last summer.

Nevertheless, his Parkhead career has become a source of frustration despite his obvious talent, taking into account the fact he has made just ten appearances in green and white so far [Transfermarkt].

Hopefully, Nawrocki can recover and fulfil his promise, though it does seem like he really can’t catch a break at the moment.

Celtic star Matt O’Riley got an ink-redible new tattoo at an exclusive Glasgow studio recently.

The 23-year-old visited Literal Ink on North Street to go under the needle for two new tattoos.

A video shared by the studio and O’Riley on Instagram shows the midfielder being inked with the designs, which appeared to be a bird and feather on his left arm.

The team at the studio called O’Riley “one of the most humble human beings and a football genius.”

Literal Ink is a members only tattoo and piercing studio in the city, and has previously been visited by fellow Celt Odin Thiago Holm.

‘Big difference’… Adam Idah shares what’s shocked him most on star players in Celtic

Celtic’s man of the moment, Adam Idah, has opened up on what it’s really like to play for the club and it’s fair to say it has been a shock to his system.

The Republic of Ireland international is a hero in the eyes of the fans after scoring two goals against Hibs earlier this season and another double today in the 3-1 win over Motherwell.

However, it was when the team drew against Aberdeen that Idah got the biggest shock to his system and realised just how massive it is to play for a club like Celtic.

Idah said [The Herald], “It is intense in Glasgow. It is such a big club that the demand for winning games is there every single week.

“I am not used to that. There is obviously a big difference between Norwich and here.

“In my first game we played Aberdeen away and when we drew, I thought to myself, ‘OK, that is a decent result’. It definitely wasn’t!

“The demand is what it should be because Celtic is such a big club. The more I’m around the place and the city it’s all football here, which I am loving.

“It’s not like that in England where you can get a draw here and there.

“That’s the big difference for me, which is understandable. It’s a learning curve.

“To have that mentality of needing to win is great and the lads who have been here a while know the score.”

Adam Idah is winning over the Celtic fans

I don’t think it’s too outlandish to say that the jury was still out on the on-loan Norwich man despite his penalty heroics against Hibs.

He hadn’t scored in two games prior to today and after missing a sitter in the draw against Kilmarnock yesterday, Idah still had a lot to do to win over the Hoops fans.

I think it’s fair to say that he has done that with today’s performance at Fir Park and if Idah didn’t realise just how important it is to play for Celtic and the demands of the club before today, he really does now.

Next up for Idah is a trip to Tynecastle next Sunday in a game that he is sure to start. And as every Celtic fan knows, a game against Hearts can be a fiery affair and it is one that Idah is certain to relish.

Marco Tilio wondergoal has Celtic fans united as Melbourne City boss tells Brendan Rodgers how to unlock loanee

The Australian winger managed just 27 minutes of football before returning to the A-League.

Celtic loanee Marco Tilio has kickstarted his career away from Parkhead as he netted a crucial goal for Melbourne City to secure a draw with Sydney FC.

The seven-time Australia cap returned to City on loan after a less than impressive stint with the Scottish Premiership after joining the Hoops last June for £1.5 million. He made just two appearance for Celtic before being sent back to the A-League – and following his return he would insist that an injury sustained before signing his five-year deal had hindered his chances of impressing Brendan Rodgers.

And he has taken his chance away from Celtic Park as he netted first goal at senior level in nearly 10 months at the Allianz Stadium. The strike showed why Celtic were keen to land the 22-year-old in the first place as the winger latched onto a clearance from City goalkeeper Jamie Young.

Tilio then rounded two defenders with a burst of pace before he buried the ball past goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne. The Paramount commentary team were sent into a frenzy by the stunning strike declaring: “Marco Tilio, welcome back to the A-League. Tilio returns from Scotland with a goal.”

The goal left Celtic fans scratching their heads over why the winger was not given a chance at Parkhead – as he racked up just 27 minutes over his two cameo appearances. One Hoops supporter on X quizzed: “Wait, you’re saying we had a winger with an actual end product?”

Another noted a similar feeling over Mikey Johnston’s form for West Brom: “We have 2 wingers we’ve papped out on loan beating defenders and scoring goals.” One chimed in: “Would loved to have seen him get a chance with us.”

One punter added to the demands for game time: “Scoring goals because he’s on the pitch playing. Won’t score many at Celtic sitting in the stands.”

And following the full-time whistle Melbourne City boss Aurelio Vidmar sang the praise of Tilio – as well as offering Brendan Rodgers a clue on how to unlock the potential of the forward. He said: “It’s a great goal. Marco’s first touch sets it all up. Incredible. He hasn’t played for six months give or take. He just needs match rhythm.

“He got 70 minutes last week and we thought at the beginning of the game he would get another 70 minutes, but he looked like he was still going and making runs. Sometimes when you have not played for five or six months it takes you five or six games to find a rhythm”

The Celtic PLC Board will be backslapping over financial results, but for the most Celtic supporters it feels like a slap in the face…

Celtic yesterday announced their eagerly awaited half-yearly financials and it came as no surprise to learn that the club is sitting on a massive pile of cash, which will thrill and delight that curious group of Celtic supporters, the Balance Sheet Bhoys, who will be lapping up the numbers on their spreadsheet and drooling over just how clever Peter and his boys really are.

This week we’ve found ourselves in the position where we are looking for a new goalkeeper after the classy Joe Hart announced his decision to hang up his gloves at the end of this season. I’m surprised that the Balance Sheet Blogger hasn’t quickly suggested sticking his best pal Pistol Pete in the team to replace Hart. Well, he certainly knows how to save! On second thoughts the wages and bonuses would too much even for our remuneration friendly PLC.

David Watson of Kilmarnock scores with a header to tie the score 1-1. Celtic v Kilmarnock, Scottish Premiership, , Celtic Park,  17 February 2024. Photo Stuart Wallace/Shutterstock

Celtic’s revenue increased by 11% to £85.2 million. Profit trading was £32.0 million, and a profit before taxation of £30.3 million. You don’t need to be a financial expert to know that is a healthy figure in this current landscape.

That is good news for those in charge who no doubt amidst some back slapping opened the bubbly and raised a glass to toast yet another healthy bonus heading their way. That’s how it works, right?

But it was ever so touching to read that they were as disappointed as the supporters when they failed to add the required quality to the squad in the January transfer window, after Project Shambles last summer. Yes, it isn’t just about this window, it’s about the one before that, and the one before that too! In my view they’ve taken their eye off the ball and neglected their duties regarding squad improvements for quite some time.

They really do take us for fools if they think we are going to fall for this nonsense. They must think we are as gullible as our rival supporters across the city, we are anything but.

By announcing these massive financial numbers it certainly clarifies the position as we watch a Celtic team showing the quality you’d expect if we were skint and couldn’t afford anything better.

That’s where we started on this PLC lark back in the 1990s and the deal was always the supporters back the PLC and they deliver the team on the park. It now looks like one side of that bargain is being taken for mugs by the other. Our team isn’t strong enough and we lack the required quality and depth which is evident in our performances and current league position.

Celtic supporters make their thoughts clear up at Pittodrie ahead of the first match after the January transfer window closed.

The incoming manager Brendan Rodgers accepted what he was given last summer, after they explained to him how clever they were with this project signing strategy then when he saw what he had to work with he very respectfully made it clear that he was short of four quality signings. Yet they delivered none in January as we watched a ten points swing in the title race where we could be five points behind at kick-off time tomorrow.

The way this Board are lording it up while trying to sympathise and connect with the supporters is a kick in the teeth to each and everyone one of us who have put our hard earned money into the club.

They are the ones reaping the rewards while we get excuses in return, delivered alongside those incredible financial result, numbers actually driven by the outstanding financial support given to the club by the Celtic support. In return get to watch an underwhelming, underperforming side on the pitch, a team devoid of quality and no real hope of improving while they get to enjoy their big fat bonuses.

Was there a note in those figures explaining that not a single penny will be paid in bonuses or dividends this season as a result of the failings to deliver in the key aspect of the club, the team on the park?  If not, there should have been.

And there’s nothing on the situation in the women’s game were for every pound Celtic spend on the team theRangers are apparently spending three and they are now eyeing a Double Treble in one season, where we’ll be back to world records and all that stuff and the board’s pals in the mainstream media will be lapping it all up. How many pages do you think the Daily Record’s Special pull-out supplement will be? 16? 24, 32?

It can’t be allowed to continue, we need to push for change and we need to hear from Dermot Desmond.

Talking of Celtic PLC’s biggest shareholder, yesterday after the Interim Results were released, Roger Mitchell posted this on his X account:

“For some reason I get to hear stuff about Scottish football, even here. I was told by two different sources that Dermot Desmond is going to have a total clear-out of the Board and Csuite. He’s had enough they said. I have no idea if this is true but I hope it is. We all love this club.”

Roger Mitchell

The former SPL Chief Executive added: “The board has been in place for 23 years and that is just bad corporate governance. Especially in a sector that is changing so much. Some of the CSuite are frankly less than mediocre. The business of football is markedly different than it was in 2002. The model, fans, comms. The club needs a radical injection of new thinking and energy.”

Then this: “It has major weaknesses in needs to draw a line under. The waft of nepotism…the legal and brand concerns over the Boys Club’…the idea that the club has no ambition beyond beating rangers as cheaply as possible, without killing them.”

The good news is this. It’s got money. Give to Caesar that which is Caesar’s…It’s got a diaspora of management talent all over the world who’d join the board likely for free…it’s got a backstory of glory no one can match. This can be fixed. Easily. If there is will.”

And finally: “Football is entering the End Game. Who knows its future? UEFA and the UCL look tired. There will be environment change. The club needs to be ready and tooled up. The big game and prize is not Scotland. I shall watch with interest.”

Mitchell was asked What is Csuite? He explained: “Ceo CFO CRO director of football. CTO. The senior exec team.”

For some reason I get to hear stuff about Scottish football, even here.

I was told by 2 different sources that DD is going to have a total clear-out of the Board and Csuite. He’s had enough they said.

I have no idea if this is true but I hope it is. We all love this club. https://t.co/zRrBQTJ16m

— Roger Paul Mitchell (@RPMComo) February 23, 2024

Make of that what you will. We know that the Celtic support is not happy at the failing in the January transfer window. It’s hard to believe that the manager is happy about it either. The Board’s Chairman yesterday said that they were frustrated and disappointed. What if Roger Mitchell is right and we have a situation where Dermot Desmond is all of those things, angry , disappointed and frustrated? Maybe he will decide to take action?

Or will we say he failed?

Just an Ordinary Bhoy

“Big lion” Jose Mourinho tipped for shock appointment at Celtic in move that would ‘make sense’

Jose Mourinho joining Celtic would make sense.

This is the view of talkSPORT’s Shebahn Aherne, who believes the ‘Special One’ in the Old Firm would bring the ‘magic’ to Scottish football.

Mourinho has been out of work for a little over a month since his Roma exit

The legendary manager, a three-time Premier League winner with Chelsea, is currently without a club following his departure from Roma in January.

Mourinho won the Europa Conference League in his first season and Roma’s first trophy for 11 years to add to his illustrious collection that includes two Champions League titles.

However, he left the club ninth in Serie A and is now awaiting his next appointment, one that could be surprisingly made in Scotland.

Speaking on Hawksbee and Jacobs for talkSPORT, presenter and Celtic fan Aherne revealed her belief that the Bhoys could be a potential destination.

Aherne said: “I like the idea. He’s in his 60’s now, he’s a legend, I think he could spice up the Scottish Premiership. I think the idea of Jose Mourinho being involved in Old Firms [derby against Rangers] could be total magic and also it could give them a chance of Europe.

“The [s***]housery would be real, it would be utter chaos and we like to see that. Okay, there’s lines to the chaos here but I do think that there’s something in it there.”

Speaking on his previous job, she added: “You look at the job that Jose did at Roma, the proud moments that it brought for him over his career, Celtic is a massive club all over the world, a world-renowned club.

“And then we talk about money, would they be able to afford him? You look at what he earned at Roma, it was around about €6million the salary over the year, [Brendan Rodgers is on] about £3-3.5million but we all know the cost of living is a little bit cheaper in Glasgow.”

Mourinho reportedly snubbed the Celtic job in 2021 after he was sacked by Tottenham and he has held a previous interest in the club.

Aherne would love to see Mourinho replace Rodgers should he leave

The Portuguese manager is one of the best in the business

Aherne added: “He actually spoke about Brendan Rodgers, his first stint at Celtic, and how he credited the job that he’d done at the club. So he does have eyes on Celtic, he is aware of the club and the stature.

“We’re also hearing that there’s links to the Bayern [Munich] job too because he’s been learning German but we can teach him colloquial Glaswegian. He could absolutely have a party up in Glasgow, imagine that? I text my dad, my dad said, ‘I’d love Jose Mourinho.’”

Graeme Souness tells Simon Jordan of Jose Mourinho’s biggest regret at Manchester United was getting rid of Zlatan Ibrahimovic

With Celtic sitting second in the Scottish Premiership behind Rangers and pressure building on Brendan Rodgers, Aherne further added to her case, saying: “It would make sense, wouldn’t it?

“Big manager, big club, experience in Europe. Celtic are terrible in Europe, Brendan Rodgers actually is worse in Europe I think than Celtic are. He’s got a terrible record, so a manager that actually could bring maybe some glory.”

Mourinho has won 26 major trophies during his career, with his most notable spells coming at Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

He recently revealed that he previously turned down the England job and shut down speculation over a return to Manchester United, with whom he won the Carabao Cup and Europa League.

JOSEPH MOURINHO TO CELTIC THEORY GIVEN ANOTHER AIRING BUT ALAN BRAZIL CAN NOT SEE FUNNY SIDE AMID HOOPS PLIGHT

Brazil kept his game face on when asked about Celtic…at least until the topic of Ally McCoist giving him pelters came up.

Alan Brazil says he’d love to see Jose Mourinho add some box office appeal to Celtic – but back in the real world, he has a big question for Brendan Rodgers and his flops.

The recent Parkhead plight has been a source of frustration for Hoops-daft radio host Brazil and Thursday morning was no different as he looked ahead to this weekend’s clash with Motherwell.

Depending on Rangers’ result against Hearts on Saturday, there could be a five-point gap between the Glasgow giants before a ball is kicked at Fir Park, and it already looks like a must-win for Rodgers who is coming under serious scrutiny.

The subject of Celtic was light-heartedly brought up on talkSPORT breakfast by co-host Shebahn Ahern, who once again floated the idea of Mourinho replacing Rodgers at Parkhead. But the vacant Bayern Munich job might be more likely for Mourinho – as Brazil kept his focus on the here and now at Celtic Park.

He said: “I would like Mourinho at Celtic…I thought you were going to say he was going to Bayern there! Look, I don’t know what’s happening at Celtic at the moment. Clearly there’s a problem, I might be wrong but I heard there was a problem with the pitch, and Rodgers wanted money for players but didn’t get it.

“These are things I’ve been told that might not be 100 per cent true. What I do know is, look at the results, there’s something not right….”

It was then put to Brazil by co-host Ahern, who initially floated the Mourinho theory on Wednesday night, that they are missing Ange Postecoglou – and added the caveat that injuries haven’t helped. Before getting to that, though, Brazil was more concerned with the ‘pelters’ he’s been getting from one of his pals on the other side of the Glasgow divide…

THE BEST CELTICS STAR PLAYER BEEN CRITICIZED, ALL THROUGH THE SEASON. SAYS BY PETER GRANT

SINCE THIS SEASON: PETER GRANT SAYS IT’S VERY STRANGE THAT 25-YEAR-OLD CELTIC PLAYER IS BEING HEAVILY CRITICISED

The criticism levied towards Celtic and Brendan Rodgers for their performances and collapse in the league is warranted. Let’s not beat about the bush.

To surrender such a commanding lead in such a weak fashion over the course of the past couple of months is unacceptable.

The players must share a portion of the blame, of course, but there is one player that Peter Grant believes is being harshly criticised and the former Celtic hero has been surprised at just how much of the spotlight Greg Taylor has taken.

Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “Greg Taylor’s back from injury, you know all these things he’s gone off in the game. It’s weird. Greg’s getting a lot of criticism but I felt when he went off on Saturday, the game changed.

“I don’t mean necessarily with Bernabei coming on, I know he’s getting a lot of criticism, I don’t necessarily mean with that,  because of the position that Greg plays and how well he plays it, but that was a blow.

“I know it was probably 60 minutes he’s got to go off, I understand that, but it was a big change in the performance even after that and that’s the fine lines.

“It’s not a team of champions, let’s not be kidded, so it’s gonna be interesting to see how they respond.”

THE GREG TAYLOR CONUNDRUM

Look, I get it. I understand that Greg Taylor is not everyone’s cup of tea and I also get that the Scotland fullback has his weaknesses.

However, the fact remains that when he is out of the team, Celtic are far weaker without him. That fact has been highlighted with the recent performances of Alexandro Bernabei.

Now I get that that could suggest that Taylor is the best option in a position where Celtic are really weak in quality but no one can deny that over the course of the past two and a half seasons, the 25-year-old has been a major contributor to Celtic’s successes.

Having said that, Celtic must strengthen that area of the team. More quality is required even if only to create healthy competition for that position of the team.

Whether that will happen in the summer remains to be seen as it will all depend on whether or not Celtic successfully defend the title and whether Brendan Rodgers is still the manager.

Assange’s wife tears into ‘dangerous’ Mike Pompeo over plan to kill WikiLeaks founder, slams UK for siding with US

Days after interviewing Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tucker Carlson spoke to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s wife Stella after conclusion of a two-day of crucial hearing on his extradition.

During her appearance on Carlson‘s show Uncensored on X, Stella blasted the UK government for supporting the United States, claiming it would be a “very high-risk moment” for Assange if Britain favours Washington.

Hindustan Times – your fastest source for breaking news! Read now.

“Well, look, we’ve just been in court for two days, and this decision could be the final one. We didn’t know when we were coming into it yesterday whether we would have a decision today, and if the UK decides in favor of the US, then it will put Julien on a plane to the US,” she said.

Notably, Assange has spent nearly five years imprisoned in London’s highly secure Belmarsh Prison. According to sources, after WikiLeaks released Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hacking tools, then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo discussed with officials the possibility of assassinating Assange under Donald Trump’s administration. He spent a considerable amount of time detained at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Stella talks about Mike Pompeo and the murder plot

When Carlson asked her about Pompeo “attempting to murder” her husband, Stella, who is a lawyer and human rights defender, called CIA a “rogue organisation”.

“They are trained to assassinate; they are trained to fabricate information and place it in the media, conduct propaganda warfare, and overthrow governments,” she said.

Assange’s wife chastised Pompeo as “dangerous individual within the CIA”. “And you know, Mike Pompeo’s ability to move around Washington without consequence, I don’t think is because of his attractiveness to the Washington circles, but because there he’s seen as a dangerous person.”

“We know the story about Julian and the murder plot because people within his organization said that he had lost the plot, that he had become obsessed with Julian, that he wanted to kill Julian, and that he was discussing it with the White House,” she added.

Stella blasts UK govt for acting as ‘lap dog’ to the US

Assange‘s wife argues that there will be no more opportunities for an appeal should they lose the current legal battle in the UK. “He can try to go to the European Court of Human Rights, but last year, only one application to the European Court of Human Rights to stop an extradition or deportation was granted,” she stated. Notably, in 2023, 63 applications pertaining to extradition were submitted to the European Court of Human Rights.

Slamming the UK government for acting as a “lap dog” to the US, Stella told Carlson that the European Court of Human Rights “should stop an extradition if the UK finds against him, but it’s not a given”.

“Julian could be on US soil within a matter of weeks,” she continued.

Carlson stated at the start of the conversation that he had just been to the jail where Assange is being held. When the American Conservative speaker questioned Assange about whether he regretted disclosing classified information that belonged to prominent politicians like Hilary Clinton, the founder of WikiLeaks allegedly said, “it was fun.”

Assange won’t know until at least next month if he can fight extradition to the United States on allegations of spying or if his protracted court battle in Britain has come to an end.

Following a two-day hearing in which Assange’s attorneys contended that extraditing him to the USwould result in a “flagrant denial of justice,” two High Court justices announced on Wednesday that they would take some time to examine their decision.

‘Forever downsizing’ ‘manipulating their fans’ ‘What an utter waste’ Celtic PR stunt backfires spectacularly

In times of trouble getting some good news out there to take attention away from the real issues is very worthwhile, it buys time and fools a decent number of people.

During season 20/21 Celtic’s social media team would have been as well going on furlough, with negativity hanging over everything they reverted to wishing obscure former players a Happy Birthday as fans waited for news of change.

The comparisons have been obvious in recent weeks, yesterday the club dug out a feature on the new training complex at Barrowfield with world class and state-of-the-art being used in a similar fashion to the unveiling of Murray Park a generation ago.

Celtic’s Academy and B team will soon have incredible facilities for preparing to face Cumbernauld Colts and Caledonian Braves- along the M8 on Airdrie’s plastic pitch.

Wednesday’s announcement was greeted with no acclaim or fanfare from supporters wise to the tactics of the club.

They know that the club is holding back on the Interim Accounts to 31 December 2023 which will reveal a bank balance of around £100m while the team collapses on the pitch, gift wrapping the SPFL title across the city.In the final week of the transfer window with expectations high for improvements the club revealed that Cameron Carter-Vickers had signed a new contract- a clear signal that there would be very little business completed before the transfer window closed.

Two days after he was pictured in Glasgow the club waited until 10.30pm on Deadline Day to announce the loan signing of Adam Idah. The reaction was almost entirely hostile- the player was excused with the fans hostility all aimed at the Chairman, CEO, Board of Directors and the former CFG Head of Information and Content.

Trust: “Pundit” has confirmed star player low performance in Celtics

The true cause of Matt O’Riley’s poor performance at Celtic, pundit said his in picture of it,

“He suffers”: Pundit said he is aware of the true cause of Matt O’Riley’s poor performance at Celtic

The form of the Celtic group is some thing that has bothered the fans for a range of months now.

Gone is the fast, free-flowing football that we cherished under Ange Postecoglou and it has been changed with a tons slower tempo and patient build-up by Brendan Rodgers.

Obviously, the damage troubles Rodgers has had to deal with haven’t helped however overall, the supporters are less than impressed with what they have been staring at from their group recently.

The most urgent trouble for the followers is the alarming drop-off of Kyogo Furuhashi. Clearly struggling for goals, Rodgers modified his procedures to accommodate the Japanese striker by playing Adam Idah as a goal man for Kyogo to work off of.

And it has worked. Two dreams in his last two games mean that Kyogo should be about to recapture his exceptional shape but, it seems, that this has been to the detriment of Matt O’Riley. That’s in accordance to pundit, Gordon Dalziel.

Dalziel stated Dalziel stated [Superscoreboard], “When he bought modified into that wide variety 10 position he scored two goals. I’ve stated from day one that Kyogo, for me is an out-and-out striker.

“Brendan Rodgers, at St Mirren, had to alternate information. It wasn’t in reality working and he was once coming in for criticism with his wingers.

“So he determined to go with the two strikers. He received the sport and they played quite well and all and sundry was pretty happy.

“What I idea used to be the difference for me is, Matt O’Riley was in the form of his life. And each and every time I assume Kyogo gets played on that 10, he suffers from it.

“I don’t assume he can make the identical runs, I don’t suppose his timing is right and the whole lot about it short. He sacrifices a little bit of his game.

“But if I was taking part in my strongest side, I would play Kyogo through the middle all day because I suppose he’s such a brilliant participant on the shoulder of defenders and motives so many problems.”

Matt O’Riley’s Celtic form

Out of all the players off form, Matt O’Riley is one that should challenge the Celtic supporters. The 23-year-old has been one of the team’s most terrific gamers over the past two seasons and it did seem like he had kicked on under Rodgers.

But over the direction of the last few games, he has mostly been anonymous. And his goals and assists in the league have dropped off massively.

In fact, you have to go as a long way again as the commencing of January when O’Riley ultimate contributed with a purpose and help in the 3-0 win over St Mirren but considering the fact that then he has mostly been disappointing. [Transfermarkt]

The Celtic guide will be hoping O’Riley turns this round soon due to the fact with 12 games left of the season, the team wishes him to locate his goalscoring touch if they have any hope of winning the league.

‘I can’t see it happening’ – John Hartson had to destroy punter Rodgers’ bizarre plan B

A current episode from Go Radio vividly illustrates the bizarre spectacle that unfolds when passion, nostalgia, and, frankly, a bit of delusion, collide stay on air.

A caller, most likely fueled by a mix of hope and desperation, floated the thinking of Martin O’Neill, the revered former Celtic supervisor (2000-2005), returning to the helm as an intervening time answer have to Celtic and Brendan Rodgers go their separate ways.

O’Neill, whose tenure is fondly remembered for a heroic run to the UEFA Cup final, has on the grounds that navigated managerial waters a ways and wide, from Aston Villa and Sunderland to the Republic of Ireland. The suggestion itself, while a heartening nod to previous glories, borders on the fantastical in today’s context.

Soccer Football – Championship – Nottingham Forest v Bolton Wanderers – The City Ground, Nottingham, Britain – May 5, 2019 Nottingham Forest manager Martin O’Neill before the match Action Images/Peter Cziborra

Rangers legend Craig Moore, caught in the moment, initially heralded the suggestion as “what a shout that is,” solely to at once tether his enthusiasm lower back to reality. Moore highlighted the monetary impracticality of such a cross by way of paying Brendan Rodgers off, mainly given Celtic’s apparent reluctance to splurge in the switch market.

Adding a layer of credibility to the discussion, Celtic icon John Hartson, who performed underneath O’Neill, expressed scepticism about the feasibility of such a reunion. “I can’t see it happening. “But Michael has thrown the cat among the pigeons there. Celtic fans, get in touch, would you like to see Martin O’Neill back?”

Hartson’s insight gently ushered the dialog from the geographical regions of fantasy back to the harsh mild of day, questioning now not simply the likelihood of O’Neill’s return but the very premise that Brendan Rodgers should be shown the door due to a season’s shortcomings.

The call to axe Rodgers and beckon O’Neill back to the fold is emblematic of the knee-jerk reactions that often pervade football discourse. It overlooks the complicated internet of decisions, strategies, and, indeed, failures that make contributions to a club’s fortunes. Blaming the manager by myself for a terrible season, except scrutinising the roles of these orchestrating the club’s recruitment and overarching policies, is simplistic and unjust.

it highlights the absurdity that football phone-ins can spiral into. The platform, whilst a precious outlet for fan expression, regularly veers into the territory of baseless speculation and wishful thinking. The name for O’Neill’s return, with all due admire to the legendary manager, is a case in point.

As entertaining as these spectacles can be, they additionally replicate a broader longing among fans for instantaneous options and fairy-tale comebacks. The reality, however, is continually extra complex. Football, for all its magic, is grounded in the hard truths of strategy, finance, and long-term planning.

Sutton is correct about Rodgers, but he ignores the board’s leading role in the Celtic disaster

Chris Sutton’s depressing precis of Celtic’s season is accurate enough in that few Celtic supporters will locate fault in what he says however will have plenty of objections about what the former striker didn’t say as he tried to select the bones over a dreadfully inconsistent domestic marketing campaign the place if some thing the consequences have on the total been higher than the performances merit

When Kilmarnock determined to press Celtic high up the park at the weekend with that pleasant header from Kyogo keeping apart the sides, this must have applicable Celtic, who have been complaining about taking part in in opposition to groups with a low block and a parked bus. Yet they had been determined out and discovered out badly when the possibility to punish a crew like Kilmarnock for taking such dangers introduced itself.

While there’s nothing many Celtic supporters will disagree with in what Sutton had to say the day past lunchtime on Sky Sports, as Celtic grip on the title weakened as theRangers moved two points clear with a predictable win against St Johnstone in Perth, it’s what Sutton didn’t say that they’ll have a hassle with.

The Celtic Board misplaced Ange Postecoglou last June. Aaron Mooy determined to retire due to a lower back injury, Carl Starlet used to be allowed to leave, Jota offered to Saudi Arabia of £25m, we had already lost Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis in the January 2023 window and there has been no alternative anywhere near the level of the personnel leaving the building.

Having had incredible success with the good buy buys Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley, the Celtic powerbrokers reckoned that this was once the way to go and devised a formula and set Peter Lawwell and Gordon Strachan’s (other) son (the one who preceding managed a golf shop) to work to discover from round the world players in their early 20s, paying no extra than £3m in costs and with a wages cap in their remit. And we bought a pile of dross.

David Watson of Kilmarnock scores with a header to tie the score 1-1 during time added on after 90 minutes. The goal stood following a VAR check for a foul. Celtic v Kilmarnock, Cinch Scottish Premiership, Football, Celtic Park, Glasgow, UK – 17 Feb 2024. Photo Stuart Wallace/Shutterstock

The of the two central defenders signed we had one sitting behind Peter Lawwell and Michael Nicholson at the weekend (see picture above) and the different sitting on the bench, and alternatively we had Liam Scales and Stephen Welsh at the centre of our defence.

Reo Hatate and Cameron Carter-Vickers have been massive losses this campaign thorough damage whilst Liel Abada is now not section of the way forward, and it’s practical for these in charge at Celtic to pin that one on the guide the resistance banner from the North Curve in early October.

Brendan Rodgers changed Ange Postecoglou after Celtic officials and Callum McGregor met him in Majorca however he got here returned to a club in transition and without any manage over the transfer business, admitting he’d coach what he’s given, and no doubt he’s heard of how clever Celtic now had been in the transfer market.

The fashion of soccer is nothing like it was beneath Postecoglou, the squad is nowhere close to as right and why Sutton factors the finger of blame at Brendan Rodgers, it’s no longer his who controlled the switch commercial enterprise or is sitting with greater than £7m in the bank. In the January window we bought a striker struggling for a recreation at Norwich and a participant that leads to the conclusion we’ve been shafted by way of Rapid Vienna yet again. Sometimes it helps to have longer recollections in football. Kuhn leaves mny pining for Mickey Johnson!

Kyogo’s now not scoring as many desires this season, yet closing season his assists got here normally from Jota and Hatate, this time around our (millions of) wingers are growing nothing, every and each one is dreadful. After the recreation at the weekend I said Rodgers have to now go 4-4-2 and just no longer start a single winger. Unless something modifications quickly then this league is gone.

Mark Lawwell used to be curiously noticed at the sport at the weekend and acquired an earful. He played a part in recruiting Ange Postecoglou – credit where it is due – but is he the first-class qualified person to build a squad succesful of beating St Johnstone, Motherwell and Kilmarnock at Celtic Park? That’s a fairly low bar but right there we’ve spilled six points.

If arguing the case for the defence then be equipped for the knock-out blow: Mark Lawwell is assisted through the other Strachan boy who would be extra suited to shifts in the Celtic superstore.

Put it this way if his dad wasn’t WGS he’d be nowhere close to the job that he’s currently in and Celtic go on about exceptional practice. It’s superb that these two are depended on but the supervisor we are supposedly paying £3m per 12 months is not.

“The end result yesterday, I don’t suppose it came as a wonderful shock. Celtic have been bang common this season. The wins have papered over the cracks – performances haven’t been there – they’re not a accurate crew this season.

“Everybody talks about the board, signings and this being a long time in the making this precise moment. Brendan Rodgers has to take responsibility. I can’t think of one participant at Celtic who he has expanded – that’s on the manager,” Chris Sutton stated on Sky Sports.

“You seem at the points they’ve dropped domestically in isolation, they’ve been poor. They’ve been outplayed, I cant keep in mind the final time a Celtic team were outplayed in halves of soccer via so many teams. That’s on Brendan. Why is it? We’ve touched on the extensive players before. They have been taking part in speedy and livid below Ange Postecoglou – the manufacturer of football is slow, predictable.

“There isn’t a concern aspect when groups go up against Celtic – groups fancy getting a result. The end result as awful as it used to be wasn’t a fantastic surprise.”

Sutton added: This is on Brendan. Celtic need to be inserting groups away domestically. Since Brendan’s come again all we’ve heard is the need for speed, passing, play. Celtic are predictable.

“You appear at Celtic’s backline – I fancy enjoying against them at my age!”

🗣️ “I can’t think of one player he has improved… Their brand of football is slow, it’s predictable.”

It has to do with mentality: has Rodgers breached a boundary that calls for action?

One comment from Brendan Rodgers honestly ought to be causing panic in the Celtic boardroom this morning.

Most of the issues of this season surfaced in the 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock, the fourth time this season that Celtic have failed to win at domestic in the SPFL, the third time in 4 video games that they’ve failed to beat Kilmarnock.

Four wingers have been used at some point of the fit with barely a single cut-back for strikers to work on, when Greg Taylor went off injured Rodgers turned to Alexandro Bernabei who was restricted to four alternative appearances in the first 1/2 of the season, more often than not failing to make the matchday squad.

Whatever issues are going on at the membership the manager is predicted to get the excellent out of the players, the majority of whom have been worried in triumphing a domestic treble closing season.

A manager has to get the nice out of the 19 players he selects after working with them for a week in training.

With one comment the previous day suggested by The Scotsman it appears that Rodgers has given up on the gamers he selected:

It is not about capability or approach now, it is about mentality. It is about now not letting that man go past you and having that power and composure to play. We saw it the second half, even although we have been now not underneath extremely good strain we kept making it challenging for ourselves.

Questioning the mentality of gamers is a very serious issue, it isn’t something that can be worked on in training.

Throughout soccer the answer in these situations is to eliminate the manager, that is easier to do than clear out a dressing room of players on long time period contracts.

If Michael Nicholson and Peter Lawwell require any proposal into taking tough choices they can appear throughout the metropolis to see what happened when Michael Beale used to be removed before the first spherical of SPFL fixtures had been completed.

Celtic’s Title Hopes Dented: Concerns Over Squad Understanding the Standard

Celtic’s title hopes took a hit with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock, leaving them unable to retake a three-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Kyogo’s opening goal was not enough as Kilmarnock’s David Watson secured a late equalizer, prompting concerns about the team’s performance.

Rodgers Takes Responsibility, McGregor Acknowledges Concerns

Manager Brendan Rodgers took responsibility for the result, and post-match, captain Callum McGregor addressed concerns about the squad’s understanding of the required standard. McGregor emphasized the need for effective communication to make players aware that a certain standard is essential every time they step onto the pitch.

Communication Breakdown and Unmet Standards

McGregor’s statement raises questions about the communication within the squad and suggests that some players may not fully grasp the consistently high standard expected at Celtic. The skipper acknowledged the recurring situation and hinted at a potential breakdown in conveying the required level of performance to some members of the team.11th February 2024; St Mirren Park, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, Scottish Cup Football, St Mirren versus Celtic; Callum McGregor of Celtic

Changes in the Squad and Concerns Over New Names

While there have been a few alterations to the squad from last season to the current one, with new names regularly among the substitutes, McGregor’s comments indicate that there might be a lack of understanding among some players about the club’s standards. Fans are expressing concerns about how the manager is managing and communicating these expectations to ensure a cohesive and high-performing team.

Long-Term Impact on Title Aspirations

With title aspirations at stake, McGregor’s candid remarks shed light on potential issues within the squad. The need for effective communication and understanding of the expected standards is crucial for Celtic to navigate the challenges of the season successfully. The concerns raised by McGregor amplify the urgency for addressing any communication breakdowns and reinforcing a unified understanding of the performance standards required for the team’s success.

‘Fabulous’ – Mikey Johnston’s performance as West Brom ‘enraged’ against Soton left a Sky Sports Pundit speechless

Controversial Incident in West Brom vs. Southampton: Mikey Johnston’s Cross and Handball Shout

In the West Brom vs. Southampton match, Mikey Johnston’s cross that led to a handball incident was praised by Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe on 16 February. Johnston’s cross found Darnell Furlong, whose volley was blocked by Jack Stephens’ hand in the Southampton box.

Hinchcliffe described the cross as “fabulous” and acknowledged that West Brom had a legitimate reason to be “enraged” at the lack of a penalty award by the unsighted referee, Sam Allison. The incident occurred in first-half stoppage time and could have potentially changed the course of the game.

While Hinchcliffe sympathized with the difficulty the referee faced in spotting the handball due to Stephens’ body obstructing the view, he highlighted the contentious nature of the situation. Challenges at Celtic

Brendan Rodgers had previously emphasized the need for the player to add physical bravery and robustness to his game to secure a regular spot in the first team.

Positive Start at West Brom

Thriving away from the pressure at Celtic, Johnston’s positive start at West Brom provides him with an opportunity to develop and showcase his abilities. At 25, time is of the essence for the Irish winger, and a successful stint at West Brom could potentially open doors for a more prominent role upon his return to Celtic.

‘He’s a shadow’: John Hartson now says ‘excellent’ 22-year-old player could depart Celtic shortly

John Hartson Raises Concerns Over Liel Abada’s Form at Celtic

Former Celtic striker, John Hartson, has expressed concerns about Liel Abada’s recent drop in form, suggesting that it might be time for the Israeli winger to consider leaving the club if he continues to be excluded from the first team.

Devoid of Confidence

Hartson, speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, highlighted that Abada appears to be lacking confidence and has become a shadow of the player who initially made a significant impact upon his arrival. Despite an impressive start alongside Jota, Abada has faced injury setbacks that have hindered his ability to replicate his earlier form.

The Dilemma for Abada and Celtic

The former Celtic striker emphasized that if Abada continues to be sidelined without featuring in the first team, it might be in the best interest of both the player and the club for him to seek regular football elsewhere. Acknowledging the challenges faced by a player who was once a key contributor but is now struggling to replicate past performances, Hartson suggests a departure could be a viable solution.

Abada’s Impactful History

Reflecting on Abada’s history at Celtic, Hartson acknowledged the player’s pivotal role in Ange Postecoglou’s transformation of the club into record-breaking Treble winners. Abada’s goals and assists played a crucial part in defeating rivals, including scoring in the Scottish Cup Final win over Inverness, contributing to Celtic’s eighth domestic treble.

Hope for a Resurgence

While the prospect of Abada leaving Celtic might have been met with resistance in the past, Hartson suggests that the situation could evolve based on the player’s form and role in the team for the rest of the season. Celtic fans, familiar with Abada’s ability to rise to the occasion when needed, hope for a resurgence that could see him reclaim the impactful role he once held.

As the Abada story unfolds, the outcome remains uncertain, with the possibility of a return to form or a departure for a fresh start hanging in the balance. Celtic supporters, eager for success, remain optimistic about the talented winger’s potential resurgence on the pitch.

‘Superb’… On Sunday, St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson was astounded by a Celtics player who makes £15,000 a week

St Mirren manager, Stephen Robinson, has shared how he was blown away by one Celtic player’s performance in Paisley on Sunday.

Stephen Robinson

Robinson’s side succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Brendan Rodgers‘ men and whilst The Buddies boss was disappointed to go out of the Scottish Cup, he reserved special praise for Celtic goalkeeper, Joe Hart.

Robinson said [PLZ Soccer], “Celtic defensively, they don’t really get that kind of credit. They are classed as a very good football team.

“But some of the blocks that they made in the six-yard box and Joe Hart, I thought was superb on the day dealing with corners and deliveries into the box.

“And you know, they deserve credit for that as well. At times the two 18-yard boxes is where the difference is between winning and losing football matches.”

A real touch of class and humility from Robinson there. Hart’s performance at St Mirren was, probably, one of his best of the season.

As I spoke about yesterday, the £15k p/w ‘keeper has been criticised for making some blunders earlier this season but of late, he has really shown his value to the Celtic team.

Against Hibs, he made three brilliant saves and at Aberdeen, he made a further two and ten ball recoveries. [Fotmob]

However, against Rangers at Ibrox earlier this season, Hart showed his true value to the Celtic team. His leadership and experience helped coach an inexperienced centre-back pairing of Gustaf Lagerbielke and Liam Scales through a tough afternoon at Ibrox which led to a 1-0 Celtic win.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Rodgers needs to make a decision on the £1m man and decide whether or not he still has a future at Celtic.

Based on the last few performances, it does seem that despite having a career spanning 20 years, Joe Hart still has a lot left to offer.

Ex-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is linked to an incredible Premier League move

Ange Postecoglou’s Rumored Move to Liverpool

Recent rumors suggest that former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is being considered for the managerial position at Liverpool, following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of stepping down at the end of the season.

Soccer Football – Premier League – Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, Britain – October 23, 2023 Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou reacts REUTERS/David Klein

Postecoglou’s Impact at Spurs

Since his move from Celtic to Spurs in the summer, Postecoglou has left an indelible mark on the North London club. He has not only transformed the team’s playing style but has also created a positive atmosphere. Under his guidance, Spurs have gained recognition for their attractive football and are currently competing for a spot in the next season’s Champions League, thanks to their strong performances in the league.

Speculation and Invitation

The speculation regarding Postecoglou’s potential move to Liverpool gained traction when Andy Maher mentioned on SEN 1116 that “Ange Postecoglou’s agent has formally received an invitation to discuss his potential interest in the Liverpool managerial position.” This revelation has added fuel to the ongoing discussions about Klopp’s successor.

Career Milestones and Achievements

If Postecoglou were to take on the managerial role at Liverpool, it would mark another significant milestone in his career. The Australian coach has experienced a meteoric rise, starting from his days in the A-League and J-League to a successful stint at Celtic, where he secured five trophies in just two years.

Stepping into Klopp’s Shoes

Taking over from a managerial giant like Klopp, who led Liverpool to numerous domestic and international triumphs, including the Premier League and Champions League titles, would undoubtedly be a massive step for Postecoglou. The potential move is further complicated by the fact that Liverpool is Postecoglou’s boyhood club, adding a sentimental layer that might make it challenging for him to turn down such an opportunity.

As the managerial saga unfolds over the coming months, the potential shift of Ange Postecoglou to Liverpool will be a storyline worth keeping a close eye on, given its potential impact on both the coach’s career and the future trajectory of the iconic English club.

The Celtic wonderkid whose cost essentially has truly skyrocketed with the aid of 1,267% after leaving in a massive way.

Celtic supporters may have enjoyed the latest sight of academy brain Rocco Vata emerging as a first-team alternative for Brendan Rodgers this year.

The 18-year-old talent has been in five matchday squads for the senior group in 2024 and made two appearances – scoring in opposition to Buckie Thistle in the SFA Cup.

Hopefully, the teenage whiz will be in a position to earn greater minutes on the pitch over the weeks and months to come as he appears to translate his brilliant academy form, with 12 goals in 15 Lowland League fits this season, over to the first-team.

The Hoops will be hoping that Vata can emerge as a everyday for Rodgers subsequently and that they can gain on the pitch from his development.

Whereas, they were now not able to do that with one of the last homegrown wonderkids to come thru their academy as Ben Doak made the jump to be part of Liverpool in the Premier League.

Ben Doak’s market price at Celtic
The Reds snapped him up from the Hoops in March 2022 for a suggested compensation charge of £600k, as he had yet to sign a professional contract with the Scottish giants – due to being sixteen at the time.

He had already made two first-team appearances beneath Ange Postecoglou in the Scottish Premiership at some point of the 2021/22 marketing campaign however that was not enough to convince him to commit his future to the club.

Doak, who used to be once described as “explosive” by way of brain scout Jacek Kulig, used to be spotted by using Liverpool and they moved to take him away from Scotland in 2022 to be part of their academy system.

Ben Doak’s modern-day market value at Liverpool

It is challenging to argue in opposition to that being a exceptional choice for the teenage dynamo as Jurgen Klopp has provided him first-team opportunities and his market cost has soared over the last two years.

At the time of writing (12/02/2024), Transfermarkt fee Doak at a whopping €10m, which is round £8.5m, and that is a fantastic make bigger of 1267% on the £600k that the English giants paid for him.

The 18-year-old gem, who has been sidelined with a meniscus tear on the grounds that December, made five senior appearances for Liverpool throughout the first half of of the season, with three of those coming in the Europa League.

Interestingly, Doak has played more first-team games (ten) for Liverpool than Vata (six) has for Celtic in all competitions, regardless of the Irish teen being seven months older.

The Scotland formative years international, who was once hailed as a herbal “force” through Klopp, has been shown a clear pathway into the senior squad on Merseyside and his soaring market cost displays his wonderful growth down south.

This suggests that there is no reason for Doak to regret his choice to make the go away from Celtic as his profession seems to be heading in the proper course at this moment in time.

Hopefully, the teenage whiz will return from harm and pick out up where he left off as a real choice for Liverpool’s first-team, with a view to incomes a increased function in the future.

Meanwhile, the Hoops might also watch on with a tinge of sadness, at the same time as they have to still be thrilled to see him doing well, as they lost out on having the homegrown dynamo as phase of their personal group moving forward.
