Paulo Bernardo returns to Celtic on a permanent deal
The Portuguese midfielder made 33 appearances during a loan spell at Celtic Park last season.
Paulo Bernardo declared his delight after securing his return to Celtic on a five-year contract.
The Portuguese midfielder has joined on a permanent transfer from Benfica after making 33 appearances during a loan spell last season.
The 22-year-old scored four goals, including one in a league win against Rangers, and his swerving strike led to the late Scottish Cup final winner against Celtic’s rivals at Hampden when Adam Idah knocked home the rebound.
“It’s amazing for me and it’s a big step in my career,” Bernardo said after being reunited with his team-mates ahead of their William Hill Premiership opener against Kilmarnock on Sunday.
“I really enjoyed last season when we won the championship and the cup, so it was great for me – my first two titles in my career, too.
“I love the club, I love the fans and I love the city, too, so it’s very, very nice to be here again.
“I love the atmosphere at Celtic Park and away in all the games. Celtic is a big, big club. The fans feed us in the game so we can score one more goal or win the game in the last minute.
“They show that they love the club and I think they really like me too, so I love them.
“I trained this pre-season with Benfica so I’m fit, I did my own work at home to be even fitter so I’m ready. I want to become champion again and I think we can do that again, and I’m very excited to be here.”

Manager Brendan Rodgers added: “Paulo had a real desire to join us permanently, having had a great experience already at Celtic, and from our side we wanted to bring a quality player who has already made such an important contribution to the club.
“Paulo made a great impact for us at some real pivotal moments, delivering for us when he needed to for the team and we are sure that he can bring that same determination, ability and quality to us over the next number of years.
“He has been a popular figure in the dressing room and I know the rest of the players will welcome him back warmly.”
Celtic are also keen to bring back Idah, who was left out of Norwich’s pre-season friendly against Hoffenheim after missing the flight to Germany on Sunday and later travelling on his own.
Three major benefits come with the most recent Celtic transfer: Rodgers joins a refined operator who aspires to be a “champion.”
Latest Celtic transfer comes with 3 big benefits as Rodgers lands classy operator with desire to be ‘champion’
Celtic have completed their latest transfer.
Paulo Bernardo has completed a permanent transfer from Benfica to Celtic.
The midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Premiership champions, as boss Brendan Rodgers lands his third signing of the summer, having already secured goalkeeping pair Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo. Bernardo impressed during a loan spell at Parkhead last season.
Negotiations have been ongoing over the course of the summer but now Celtic have their man ahead of Flag Day versus Kilmarnock. Adam Idah is another Rodgers wants to land after time out on loan in Glasgow from Norwich City. Speaking on his new signing, Rodgers said: “I am delighted that we have secured Paulo on this long-term contract.
“Paulo had a real desire to join us permanently, having had a great experience already at Celtic, and from our side we wanted to bring a quality player who has already made such an important contribution to the club.
“Paulo made a great impact for us at some real pivotal moments, delivering for us when he needed to for the team and we are sure that he can bring that same determination, ability and quality to us over the next number of years. He has been a popular figure in the dressing-room and I know the rest of the players will welcome him back warmly.”
Bernardo adds: “It’s amazing for me and it’s a big step in my career. I really enjoyed last season when we won the championship and the cup, so it was great for me – my first two titles in my career, too.
“I love the atmosphere at Celtic Park and away in all the games. Celtic is a big, big club. The fans feed us in the game so we can score one more goal or win the game in the last minute. They show that they love the club and I think they really like me too, so I love them.

Celtic told to go and sign young SPFL player who has ‘got everything’
Transfer chat seems to be the order of the day for Celtic as Brendan Rodgers adds Paulo Bernardo to his ranks this afternoon.
The Portuguese was unveiled at Celtic Park as Rodgers’ third signing of the summer behind Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel.
The move will undoubtedly please the patient Parkhead support but they will be eager for Rodgers to get a lot more deals done before the transfer window closes in September.
And one player who Peter Grant would love to see at Celtic is young Motherwell starlet, Lennon Miller.
Celtic told to go and get Liam Miller ‘now’
The former Celtic hero was speaking about potential moves the club could make and was in no doubt that Brendan Rodgers must bring in the Scotland U19 international to club immediately.
Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “The midfield area, I’m going to throw one here, I really like the young boy, Lennon Miller at Motherwell.
“And people are talking maybe a creative and maybe he’s only young but I would take him now.
“I don’t know what Celtic have, but if they’ve got anything underneath that’s better than him at this moment in time, I’ll be surprised. I really like Lennon Miller.
“I think he’s got everything. I think he’s got an eye for a goal. I think he’s more than capable of playing in the league at this moment in time.
“Europe is completely different. But with the likes of Bernardo coming in, it’s another young group of players.
“I just really like Lennon Miller. That’s somebody that I would take even from here.”
Lennon Miller for Celtic?
The young 17-year-old was a revelation for Motherwell last season as he made 32 appearances for the club scoring once and creating three.
One of those assists was against Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic last season as The Steelmen made his team work hard for a 3-1 win at Fir Park.
Lennon clearly has potential and it is obvious he wouldn’t get into the Celtic team right away but he would get a superb education from Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley.
This would stand him in good stead to become a good Celtic player if he ever did make the Parkhead switch.
Celtic were said to be ‘keeping tabs‘ on Miller back in November and with less than two years left on his current deal, it wouldn’t break the bank to get one of Scotland’s hottest properties to make the move to Paradise.
Report: Celtic Back in for Owen Beck
Celtic’s pursuit of a new left-back has hit another roadblock as the club reportedly turned their attention back to Liverpool’s Owen Beck after being rebuffed by Wolves for Hugo Bueno. Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring in competition for Greg Taylor, but so far, finding the right fit has been a challenge.
The bhoys were close to landing Beck back in January, with a loan move from Liverpool seemingly on the cards. However, Liverpool’s then-manager Jurgen Klopp unexpectedly fielded Beck as a late substitute in a January match, which complicated matters. Under FIFA regulations, a player cannot appear for three different clubs in a single season. This last-minute appearance for Liverpool meant Beck’s potential move to Celtic had to be shelved, and he was instead sent back out on loan to Dundee.
Now, as Celtic continue their search for a solid addition to their defence, they’ve once again set their sights on Beck. According to MailSport’s Lewis Steele, Celtic are interested in securing the 21-year-old on loan. However, Liverpool are more inclined towards a permanent sale this summer, which could potentially complicate negotiations.

With the clock ticking and the need for reinforcements pressing, it remains to be seen whether the bhoys will be able to bring Beck to Parkhead, or if they’ll need to look elsewhere to bolster their ranks before the transfer window slams shut.
Three days before the new season kicks off, Celtic finally confirmed their first outfield signing of the summer, bringing some relief to a fanbase eager for fresh faces. After a summer of speculation and drawn-out negotiations, the bhoys have secured Bernardo from Benfica, a familiar face who impressed during his loan spell at Parkhead.

Bernardo’s arrival has been eagerly anticipated, with the midfielder showing plenty of promise during his previous stint with the club. His ability to dictate play from the centre of the park and his keen eye for a pass will undoubtedly strengthen Brendan Rodgers’ options as the team looks to defend their domestic crown and make strides in Europe.
This signing marks a significant step forward for Celtic in the transfer market, and fans will be hoping it’s a sign of more to come as the club looks to build a squad capable of competing on all fronts.
Kasper Schmeichel believes the Matt O’Riley Celtic transfer trump card will be crucial in the game of keeps.
Kasper Schmeichel has started the job of trying to convince Denmark team mate Matt O’Riley to stay put for another season at Celtic.
The veteran keeper revealed yesterday he is already attempting to talk O’Riley into turning down a potential big money move as clubs from around Europe circle the 23-year-old. Serie A outfit Atalanta are understood to have three bids turned down in recent weeks while Roma, Juventus, Southampton and Atletico Madrid are all believed to be monitoring the situation closely.
But, having arrived in Glasgow as Joe Hart’s successor on a one year deal, Schmeichel is desperate for his countryman to hang around. He said: “I’m trying everything, trust me! I’m trying everything to make him stay. But he’s not given anything away yet so you’d need to ask him. But from what I know of Matt he’s a very level-headed guy with great parents behind him helping him with whatever decisions.
“What I do know is that he does love playing here and he has loved his time here. And whether it’s now – or hopefully later – then no matter what, Celtic means a great deal to him. For me, I hope he stays. And I’m doing everything I can to convince him.”
O’Riley has been in sparkling pre-season form ahead of Sunday’s flag day showdown with Kilmarnock at Parkhead. Schmeichel admits that even he’s been caught by surprise by the levels his compatriot was hitting on the champions summer tour of the States. And he’s hoping the lure of a crack at the Champions League might be enough to make O’Riley stay put.
He said: “There aren’t many better arenas to show what you can do than the Champions League. And he’s already done that. I just hope he’s there again in a Celtic top for me to experience as well.
“He’s a top quality player. It’s always difficult to judge when your with the national team as you meet, have matchday -1, game day, recovery and then you go away again. You don’t get a lot of time to see people. But having seen him every day here, what a player!”
Kasper Schmeichel
Schmeichel is now back in Scottish football for a second stint – 17 years after a loan spell at Falkirk. And he revealed he always had a sneaking feeling he’d end up in Glasgow’s East End.
The 37-year-old said: “There was always something with Celtic for some reason. We have had Morten Wieghorst and Thomas Gravesen playing here and it was always a club that appealed to me in some way.

Kick off is packed full of insight into the season ahead. Our expert writers guide you through what to expect from Celtic in 2024/25, turn the spotlight on Brendan Rodgers, run the rule over the new signings and the players who are key to success.
“I followed Celtic a lot closer with Joe being here and having played here as a youngster, it made a big impression. I knew what the club was and how big it is. I just want to win here. That is my motivation – to be together as a team and accomplish something.
“Those days are few and far between in football and they last forever in the memory. There has been a rich history of winning here and I am here to do whatever I can to make that continue.”
Leicester is actively pursuing players from Arsenal, Celtic, Napoli, and Lens, since all of them would be ideal for Steve Cooper.
Looking at the different rumours coming through you are of course looking at it with a special eye, as we would like to see Leicester signing up new young players, having a squad of mature and experienced players.
There are four names we are cheering on, in the group of players lately seen as potential new signings, but of course not seeing Leicester going solo in any of these chases, again potentially difficult to get those moves over the line.
Jens Castore from Napoli, Elye Wahi at Lens and Reiss Nelson of Arsenal are the three names of the pack in the hot, cool and cold rumours list that really stands out as almost perfect additions. They would lift the roof and really give Leicester more power and fans something to be excited for.
Reiss Nelson looks to be a rumour cooling down as his name no longer is seen much in relation to Leicester, despite having a thorough update from Fabrizio Romano a few years back. Nelson would be a perfect addition and one to challenge over the total front line.
Jens Castore (24) is one very special player. The swede is one to really recognize and would be very interesting to see him in Premier League action. He is a central defensive midfielder, but he is skilled and can also go forward and find those pockets to play the ball through to forwards.

Elye Wahi (21), currently with Lens and previously playing alongside Stephy Mavididi at Montpellier. The forward is a young wonderful prospect and if Tom Cannon is to be loaned out to a Championship club, he could be the man to call on.
Exciting days as Leicester manager Steve Cooper is to build his perfect squad for the next season, but still none of the players suggested are not the playmaker Leicester need to be able to get the creativity. Matt O’Riley is the fourth name that we believe would have been one very special additon. Southampton seen as a frontrunner, but that surely should not stop Leicester to enter the chase. According to a Celtic fansite, he is not that eager to move on and we would probably not see him in a move to Leicester this summer.
Championship side hold talks with Celtic defensive target
Hull City are reportedly in talks with Celtic target Scott McKenna over a deal to sign the centre back. The 27-year-old was part of Steve Clarke’s Scotland side at Euro 2024 and was impressive in an underwhelming campaign from the Scots.
According to the Hull Daily Mail, Hull have held talks with the player over a deal but recognise that it may be difficult.
Celtic are said to be interested in a deal but the report states that Rangers are also interested in the 37-capped defender.
McKenna is available as a free agent after being released by Nottingham Forest at the end of his contract, which was expected after he made the temporary switch to Copenhagen. Back in June, McKenna admitted that he would be open to making a move to Celtic.
“That is just natural when you have got teams the size of Celtic and Rangers. I know a lot of people who support both teams, so it is going to happen. They are going to question you, but there is nothing to tell.
“I’m without a club, so I think I would need to consider anything. There is nothing as of now, so there is nothing to think about. For me, that is completely on the back burner – I just have to do everything I can in training to try and get whatever minutes I can on the pitch here. Anything after that will take care of itself.
“There is no bigger stage if you are on the pitch to put you in the shop window. I can only do that by first and foremost training well and trying to get in the manager’s thoughts. To be honest, I am open to anything. I would never rule anything out.”
Celtic will be looking to strengthen at centre back this summer and add competition for Liam Scales, who has become the first pick alongside stalwart Cameron Carter-Vickers. There is the added benefit of having a home-grown, Scottish Internationalist in the ranks for the UEFA Champions League quota.
Rangers’ Hampden move ‘better for Scottish football’ as willing Queen’s Park accommodate Ibrox switch
Spiders boss Callum Davidson happy to help Glasgow neighbours
Callum Davidson has stressed that Queen’s Park’s willingness to accommodate Rangers’ need to play home matches at Hampden was motivated solely by a desire to assist Scottish football.
It’s not clear what financial benefit the Championship club stand to gain from the arrangement, with Rangers having been left desperate for a temporary venue to host home matches following delays to renovation work at the Copland Stand at Ibrox.
Queen’s Park – and their supporters – have now been left unsure when they will be able to return to Hampden for home games. They had intended to do so after the upcoming international break in September after striking a deal with the SFA.

“It’s only affected my schedule, really,” said Davidson. His team now face Championship title favourites Livingston at 7.45pm at the City Stadium (Lesser Hampden) next Friday as opposed to the following day because Rangers face Motherwell at Hampden that afternoon.
“I think it is brilliant that we could help,” Davidson continued. “Obviously we want to help the big clubs, we want to help Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen. But we want to help any club really. We are in a position at Queen’s Park where we can do so. Football is quite fragile on the money side and hopefully Rangers can get full houses when they come here (Hampden) for European games and what have you.
“It is much better for Scottish football if that is the case, far better than them travelling 30 or 40 miles away to get a game,” he added. “I am delighted that Queen’s Park and the people behind the scenes here have managed to help Rangers. If it had been Celtic we would have done the same thing.
“I am always trying to help Scottish football, that is my big thing,” he added. “That is probably the reason I am manager at Queen’s Park. I came here with the remit to try and bring some young Scottish players through. That is my goal. Yes, results are important, but so is the development of young Scottish players.”
Davidson is adamant the uncertainty won’t be affect his own side’s ambitions this season as they seek to gain promotion from a very competitive division. Queen’s Park have already qualified for the second round of the Premier Sports Cup after finishing second in their group behind Hibs. They kick off the league season away to Falkirk on Friday night before facing Livingston, who have already registered their disapproval at the change of schedule, seven days later at the City Stadium, Queen’s Park’s ‘other’ home. Davidson accentuated the positives of playing more games than previously envisaged at the recently revamped ground.
“I don’t think I have seen a better football pitch, even when I played down in England,” he said. “We are working hard to get some temporary stands. Getting Queen’s Park into the Premiership is the ultimate ambition here. We will go back to playing at Hampden and will have some big games there and that will help us.
“We were always going to play the first couple of league games at The City Stadium because of the regeneration of the grass and then go back to Hampden. I don’t really mind where we play as long as the pitch is good. We are pretty spoiled. We have got two fantastic surfaces, great facilities. We are very lucky.”
Davidson was speaking at the launch of a new gambling harm prevention programme that is being delivered to players, staff and supporters at all 42 senior clubs by EPIC Global Solutions as part of the new SPFL title sponsorship deal with William Hill.
Celtic player named in team of tournament with Lionel Messi
Alistair Johnston has hardly been short of plaudits since joining Celtic last January, and now he’s been named in the CONMEBOL Copa America Team of the Tournament alongside Lionel Messi and other world class talent.
Having gone all the way to the competition’s semi-finals, ultimately losing 2-0 to Messi’s Argentina, Johnston impressed throughout the tournament – so much so that he’s now earned a place in the tournament’s best starting XI, rubbing shoulders with Leandro Martínez, James Rodriguez, and Manchester United key target (and current PSG midfielder) Manuel Ugarte.
Here’s the Copa America Team of the Tournament from back to front:

Due to his Copa America commitments, Johnston did not link up with his teammates on their recent tour of America, but is back training with Brendan Rodgers and his players at Lennoxtown ahead of their first Scottish Premiership fixture this weekend.
In an interview earlier today, Johnston hailed his new colleague, veteran goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
He said: “Replacing Joe not only on the pitch but off it is really difficult. I think the manager did a great job with Kasper. He is a man with a ton of experience just like Joe. He is a big presence in the locker room. He still has plenty of quality and we saw that throughout pre-season.
“We have all been happily surprised with the level that he still has. I think he is going to prove a lot of people wrong just the same as Joe did when he came up here. A lot of people wrote him off and not because they doubted his quality just because he had been out of the limelight a little bit.
“He’s been playing in France and Belgium for the past two years so he was kind of out of sight and out of mind. Now he’s going to remind everybody of how much of a quality goalkeeper he is.
“We have seen how good he is with his feet and some of the saves he made even just in my first two days at training have been unbelievable. I’m excited to build that relationship and trust with him as it is so important that you have a goalkeeper that instils confidence in the backline.”
Up the Road; Idah Tipped to Seal Celtic Move This Week
Celtic are reportedly on the verge of securing Adam Idah on a permanent deal, with the striker expected to make his second debut for the club in this Sunday’s Premiership opener against Kilmarnock. According to RecordSport, insiders suggest that the transfer is close to completion.
The Hoops have been in negotiations with Norwich City throughout the summer, with Brendan Rodgers eager to bring the Republic of Ireland international back to Parkhead after his impressive loan spell last season.
Idah made a significant impact during his time with Celtic, scoring vital goals that helped the club secure both the league title and the Scottish Cup. One of his standout moments was netting the winner against Rangers in the Cup Final, further cementing his place in the hearts of the Celtic support.

The 23-year-old has made no secret of his desire to rejoin the Hoops, and was even spotted holidaying with Celtic star James Forrest last month.
However, Idah finds himself in hot water with Norwich after missing a flight to the club’s pre-season camp in Austria. Although Norwich initially turned down a £4 million offer from Celtic, sources down south now indicate that a deal could be finalised within days.
Celtic fans have had a frustrating summer when it comes to transfers. The running joke is Bernardo has been confirmed so many times in the media we’ve signed the midfielder ten times. We should never count our chickens but hopefully we have some good news in the next few days with regards to both Bernardo and Idah.
Adam Idah Celtic move imminent with striker in line to make second debut in Premiership opener
The striker is poised to complete a permanent switch to Parkhead from Norwich City after impressing in a six-month loan spell last season.
Celtic are reportedly on the brink of signing Adam Idah on a permanent basis – with the striker in line to make his second debut for the club in Sunday’s Premiership opener with Kilmarnock.
The champions have been locked in talks with Norwich City all summer, with Brendan Rodgers keen to bring the Republic of Ireland international back to Parkhead after a successful loan spell where he netted nine goals in 18 matches – including the winner against Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final. Idah himself has made it no secret that he wants to rejoin the Hoops, and was spotted on holiday with Hoops star James Forrest last month.
The 23-year-old is set to be disciplined by the Canaries for failing to make a flight for the club’s pre-season camp in Austria. Norwich have already turned down an offer of £4million from Celtic for Idah but sources down south now claim that a deal could be completed within a matter of days.
The forward was left out of the squad for Monday’s friendly clash against Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, with Carrow Road gaffer Johannes Hoff Thorup then revealing that before the game that player will be facing disciplinary action for not turning up to the airport on time. He said: “With Adam, there are some internal issues where he reported late for the flight on Sunday going to Austria.
“We decided he should come as quickly as possible. But of course he could not be part of this game because there are some things we can accept and there are some things we cannot accept. And this is a part we cannot accept.”

Dissecting Matt O’Riley’s Celtic transfer state of play
Matt O’Riley has his fair share of transfer suitors this summer… (Image: NQ)
As you would likely expect at this time of year, Celtic’s prized asset last season has been heavily linked with a move away from the club.
Indeed, Matt O’Riley’s breakout season last campaign was one for the books, scoring 19 goals and contributing another 18 assists, a total of 37 goal contributions in all competitions. Though the majority of these happened domestically, O’Riley was Celtic’s standout performer in Europe, too, with three assists to his name against Lazio, Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord last year.
With good European performances comes potential suitors from around the globe, which proved to be the case when Champions League opponents Atletico came calling for the Denmark international’s services this January. Though this approach was rejected, this summer seems like a more likely time for the 23-year-old to depart the club.
In light of this, The Celtic Way discusses the options that the midfielder has, as the transfer vultures continue to swirl surrounding a potential move away from the club.
The Atalanta (and Juventus) links
The most consistently talked about destination this summer for O’Riley has been Italy, with the reigning Conference League winners Atalanta having lodged at least three bids thus far for Celtic’s number 33.
As it stands, the Bergamo club have not managed to submit a bid anywhere near Celtic’s asking price, with the latest offer standing at around £15 million plus add-ons. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are currently in the process of negotiating with Juventus over the sale of their star midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, which would free up both space and funds for O’Riley respectively. €45 million has been reported as the first bid submitted by the Turin side for the Dutch playmaker, with Atalanta reportedly holding out for a fee closer to €60 million for their asset.
Interestingly, Thiago Motta’s Juventus have also been reported to be interested in Celtic’s midfielder, though not as much as their Serie A rivals. If O’Riley was to be keen on moving to Italy, then stylistically Atalanta would be an attractive fit, particularly under Gasperini. His keenness to press the opposition would subscribe to the style of play that the now-legendary manager elects to play at the club.
Out of all the links thus far, this seems to be the one that is most likely to transpire at the moment, though this is an everchanging development day by day.
A Russell Martin reunion at Southampton
From foreign interest to a familiar face closer to home, English Premier League newcomers Southampton have registered an interest in O’Riley, who are managed by his former MK Dons manager Russell Martin.
Martin – who played for Rangers at the end of his career – worked with Celtic’s star man before moving to Swansea in 2021. Like Atalanta, Southampton have seen at least one bid being batted away by Brendan Rodgers and the club, not meeting their valuation of the player. “Not even close”, in the manager’s words to Sky Sports yesterday. It would seem like the St Mary’s side will have to up their bid like their transfer rivals Atalanta to get a seat at the Celtic bidding table.
Perhaps the most interesting facet of this development was the rumour that Northern Ireland international Shea Charles could be a part of this deal, as well as a fee for the receiving club Celtic. A position that Rodgers seems to be keen to improve on, any possibility of the former Manchester City player being involved in this transaction have been largely rubbished, though Celtic are still keen on the 20-year-old.
If you factor in the influence of a manager, then perhaps Martin knows O’Riley better than most. After all, he was a mainstay in the MK Dons team that were praised in the lower leagues of English football three or so years ago. If this reunion is to be fully realised, then Southampton will have to up their transfer offer considerably before O’Riley and Celtic even consider parting ways with each other.
Even still, you would expect O’Riley’s ambitions to lie higher than a newly promoted side, regardless of who is at the helm.
Other interested parties
Two European giants have recently expressed their interest in O’Riley in the shape of Inter Milan and the aforementioned Atletico Madrid.
However, the likelihood of either team actively pursuing the midfielder are likely consigned to history, with both sides having either completed or in the process of signing midfield reinforcements. In the case of Inter, Davide Frattesi has made the move from Sassuolo to Milan, whilst Madrid are in talks with Chelsea and England’s Conor Gallagher.
Of course, things can change quickly, though it looks as if O’Riley’s destination will not be situated in Milan or Madrid – at least, for now.
What if he stays put?
With the way that the player is discussed in some sectors, you would assume that O’Riley is a certainty to move on to pastures new in the next month or so.
While that may well turn out to be the case, staying at Celtic could be the most attractive option for the player – at least, on the pitch. Yes, Atalanta – like his current club – have at least eight games to play in the revamped Champions League, but O’Riley has all of that in Scotland plus the acclimatisation and experience of playing for Celtic.
O’Riley is only 23-years-old. What harm can another year do at a club that value your qualities and give you a platform to succeed and be the ‘main man’? If these sides are interested now, then the chances are that they’ll be just as interested in a year’s time – or more so.
Regardless of what transpires between now and the end of the window, the club hold all of the cards thanks to an ingenious contract renewal back in September last year. Signed on the same day as his goal vs Motherwell in the 97th minute at Fir Park, this bit of business secured O’Riley until the summer of 2027, essentially increasing his value as a Celtic asset through contractual length and stability.
To put it quite simply, the club’s position could not be any stronger concerning O’Riley.
‘But Norwich sources’ Celtic’s Idah deal is edging closer
closing in on a deal for Adam Idah but the story is based on unidentified ‘Norwich sources’.
The striker missed a friendly played on Tuesday night in Austria as a disciplinary issue with Norwich boss Johannes Thorup going public over after the issue after the match.
Norwich’s new boss also acknowledged that transfer speculation could be a factor with the final month of the transfer window likely to intensify activities.
CELTIC are edging closer to a deal for Norwich City striker Adam Idah.
Canaries chiefs have already turfed out a £4million Hoops bid for last season’s Parkhead loan star.
But Norwich sources believe a deal could soon be struck to bring Idah back to Celtic – potentially in time for Sunday’s Premiership opener against Kilmarnock.
The Irishman is set to be disciplined by the Championship club after failing to make a flight to Austria for a pre-season training camp.
The 23-year-old is understood to be keen on a Celtic return and further talks are expected between the clubs in the coming days.
Celtic and Norwich have probably remained in contact throughout the summer over a deal for Idah with both clubs keen to come out on top.
A permanent move to Celtic was always the likely outcome but with a contract running until 2027 the Championship side have a high degree of control.
Obtaining a fee far higher than anticipated when Idah moved out on loan in January would be a positive for the new boss, with the late arrival of the player in Austria there won’t be much backing for the striker from Norwich fans.

Celtic preparing bid to sign £9m player compared to Roy Keane and his club are happy to sell
Celtic are now ready to make a move to sign a player who has been described as the new Roy Keane.
Brendan Rodgers has already welcomed Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo to Glasgow this summer as the Bhoys aim to defend the Scottish Premiership title next season.
Now – however – a midfielder is on the radar for Celtic with a bid in the pipeline…
Celtic ready to bid for Hannibal Mejbri
A story from Mosaique FM now claims that Celtic are keen to sign Manchester United No.46 Hannibal Mejbri.
The Tunisian news outlet believe Celtic are preparing a bid for the Tunisia international as Rodgers attempts to improve his midfield department this summer.
Mosaique FM add that the Red Devils are willing to let Mejbri depart Old Trafford this summer, as he has already entered the final 12 months of his contract – this window may represent Manchester United’s last chance to secure a fee for the talented midfielder.
Manchester United actually spent £9m to sign the 21-year-old from Monaco back in August 2019, when he was just 16 years of age.
Unfortunately, several managerial changes in the dugout, and fierce midfield competition, have seen Mejbri make just 13 appearances for Manchester United, with Celtic now ready to offer the man from Ivry-sur-Seine a fresh start.
Brendan Rodgers could sign the new Roy Keane
As aforesaid, Mejbri has been compared to Keane – who made 11 appearances for Celtic before retiring in Glasgow.
It was Nicky Butt who made the comparison, also lumping the Celtic target in with greats such as Steve Bruce, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Bryan Robson after describing Mejbri as a “leader” on the pitch.
The 49-year-old told the Manchester Evening News: “Leaders are always looked at like a Roy Keane, a Steve Bruce, a Bryan Robson, those kind of verbal, real aggression, real leaders, and then you’ve got leaders like Paul Scholes or David Beckham or Ryan Giggs, who are quiet but really lead by example of how they play and how they work hard.
“Hannibal is a leader. The way he plays his football is 100mph, he’s non-stop running up and down.”
Celtic will hope Adam Idah incident, Johannes Hoff Thorup admission speeds up Norwich City deal: View
Adam Idah’s future is currently uncertain.
The 23-year-old remains with Norwich City at this stage, but he did extremely well on loan at Scottish Premiership giants Celtic last season.
This has allowed the Republic of Ireland international to put himself in the shop window, with his ability to pop up at crucial times helping Brendan Rodgers’ side to win multiple trophies during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, and there have been attempts to bring him north of the border permanently.
Joining during the January window, Idah only had a fairly short amount of time to make an impact in Glasgow, but it’s an opportunity he took with both hands with the striker scoring regularly.

However, a move away from Carrow Road isn’t guaranteed for the player this summer, even after such an impressive loan spell at Celtic Park.
Latest on Adam Idah’s situation at Norwich City
Speaking to journalist Paddy Davitt, Norwich boss Johannes Hoff Thorup revealed yesterday that Idah didn’t fly out to Austria with the Canaries’ first-team squad.
Following the Irishman’s decision, the Canaries are set to discipline the player, something that isn’t ideal for the club considering the club faces their first league game of the season against Oxford United in less than a fortnight.
Thorup has taken a hard line on this incident, stating that every player must follow the rules, including Idah.
He then went on to admit that the Scottish side’s interest in the player may have played a part in the striker’s decision not to travel out to Austria.
Celtic will be hopeful that Adam Idah incident will speed up Norwich City deal
A couple of things could work against the Scottish side.
Firstly, Idah’s contract at Carrow Road doesn’t expire until the summer of 2028 and with this in mind, the Canaries are in a very strong negotiating position.
Even if they need to cash in on players, something that seems unlikely considering Max Aarons and Andrew Omobamidele were both sold last summer, they have others they can sell.
Jonny Rowe, Gabriel Sara, and Josh Sargent could all attract interest between now and the end of the window, with Sara recently the subject of a bid, so it would be difficult to see Norwich finding themselves under pressure to sell him because of financial reasons.
The possibility of Idah becoming an integral part of the Canaries’ squad for next season cannot be ruled out either, with Willy Gnonto managing to force his way back into Leeds United’s first team despite being embroiled in an unhelpful transfer saga last summer.
The Irishman could be an extremely valuable first-teamer during the 2024/25 campaign and Thorup probably recognises that, so the Bhoys need to keep an eye on the situation.
This pre-season incident could also help Rodgers’ side to get a deal over the line for the player, however, having submitted a £4m bid for the striker earlier this summer.
According to Football Insider, they are set to make a new offer for Idah, potentially in the hope that the incident will pressure Norwich into accepting a bid for him.
If the situation worsens, his situation at Carrow Road could become untenable, if it hasn’t already.
This is a situation that needs to be sorted out before the start of the season, because it could potentially affect on-field performance if it doesn’t, with the headlines that this story has already created.
They face Oxford away from home for their opening game of the campaign and on paper, they will be expected to come out on top in that clash, but it won’t be an easy tie.
Des Buckingham’s side will be buzzing after their promotion and keen to put on a good performance in front of their home fans, reinforcing the need for the Idah situation to be sorted as quickly as possible.
From Celtic’s perspective, they’ll hope that this incident will help push the Canaries into a sale sooner rather than later.
Report: Celtic to Hijack Rival’s Forward Deal
Celtic’s Strategic Shift: Pursuing Lawrence Shankland Over Adam Idah
Hoops Eye Adam Idah Alternatives
Celtic’s summer transfer saga continues to intrigue as they shift their focus from Norwich City’s Adam Idah to Hearts’ sharpshooter Lawrence Shankland. The Scottish Premiership champions are considering alternatives after their initial £4 million bid for Idah was rebuffed, with the striker valued at about double that amount by Norwich. With the new Norwich coach, Johannes Hoff Thorup, emphasising a close look at Idah during pre-season, Celtic’s pursuit might face significant delays.
As reported by HITC, “Celtic are looking at alternative options to Norwich City striker Adam Idah with the Scottish Premiership champions potentially hijacking Rangers’ move for Hearts frontman Lawrence Shankland.” This move underlines the dynamic nature of the transfer market where timing and opportunity often dictate terms.
Shankland’s Stellar Record
Lawrence Shankland’s appeal as an alternative is enhanced by his remarkable scoring record. Last season, Shankland was nothing short of sensational, securing the Scottish Premiership Golden Boot and Player of the Year awards. With 31 goals in all competitions and a staggering total of 59 goals in two seasons at Hearts, his prowess in front of goal is well documented.
“HITC have been told that Celtic are now stepping up their pursuit of Lawrence Shankland as an agreement with Norwich continues to prove elusive.” His contract situation at Tynecastle, which runs out in 2025, also presents a potentially more affordable and feasible acquisition for Celtic compared to Idah.
Glasgow Giants’ Rivalry Intensifies
The storyline gets even more fascinating considering the involvement of Rangers, who are currently leading the race for Shankland’s signature. However, Celtic’s interest could turn this into a classic Old Firm transfer battle. Shankland, a Glasgow-born player, might find the allure of staying in his hometown with a top club too tempting to pass up, especially if it comes with the chance to play Champions League football.
Potential Impact at Celtic
The potential addition of Shankland could be a strategic masterstroke for Celtic. Not only would it bolster their attacking options, but it would also prevent a key talent from strengthening a direct rival.
Our View – EPL Index Analysis
The prospect of signing Lawrence Shankland feels like a strategic coup in the making. Not only does Shankland boast an incredible goal-scoring tally that promises to light up Parkhead, but the thought of snatching him right from under Rangers’ noses adds an exhilarating edge to this transfer saga.
Shankland’s knack for delivering big goals in crucial moments makes him an ideal fit for a club with Celtic’s ambitions. His arrival could signal a shift in the balance of power in the Scottish Premiership, especially if he replicates his goal-scoring feats in the green and white.

— CONMEBOL Copa América™️ (@CopaAmerica) July 31, 2024
