The Rolling Stones Reveal How Fan-Inspired Tongue and Lips Logo Changed Their Lives
The Rolling Stones’ tongue and lips logo is one of the most recognizable symbols in rock history. For decades, it has been a badge of rebellion, swagger, and timeless coolness. Recently, the legendary band shed new light on the logo’s origins, revealing that it was, in fact, inspired by their own fans—a piece of information that has only deepened its mystique.
The Origins of an Icon
Created in 1970 by graphic designer John Pasche, the logo was commissioned to reflect the band’s rebellious spirit and charismatic frontman, Mick Jagger. The design’s bold red lips and protruding tongue were intended to capture Jagger’s distinctive mouth and his larger-than-life persona. But what many fans don’t know is that the concept itself was influenced by the passion and creativity of the Stones’ own audience.
During a recent interview, Jagger admitted that the band was inundated with fan art and sketches during their early years. One recurring theme stood out—images emphasizing Jagger’s expressive lips and audacious stage presence.
“Our fans have always been incredibly creative. We’d get these wild drawings and posters sent to us from all over the world,” Jagger explained. “A lot of them exaggerated my lips or had these cartoonish versions of me sticking my tongue out. It stuck with us—no pun intended.”
Fan Art Turned Global Symbol
Inspired by their devoted followers, the band approached John Pasche to create something that would capture their essence. While Pasche took inspiration from the Hindu goddess Kali, known for her protruding tongue, he was also influenced by the fan sketches that highlighted Jagger’s mouth as a focal point of the band’s persona.
According to Keith Richards, the decision to adopt the tongue and lips logo was a nod to the fans who had been drawing similar designs all along. “We wanted something that was ours, but also theirs. It was the fans who saw that in us before we even did,” Richards admitted.
How the Logo Changed Their Lives
The logo’s impact on The Rolling Stones’ career has been monumental. Beyond album covers and tour posters, the emblem became a cultural phenomenon, appearing on merchandise ranging from T-shirts and hats to skateboards and tattoos. It represented not just the band, but an attitude and lifestyle that resonated with generations of fans.
“It gave us something more than just the music,” Jagger reflected. “It was like our own flag. And it wouldn’t exist without the fans. They inspired it, and they kept it alive.”
A Lasting Legacy
The Rolling Stones continue to tour and release music decades after the logo’s creation, and it remains as powerful a symbol as ever. What makes it even more remarkable is knowing that it was born out of a dialogue between the band and their fans—a visual representation of their shared spirit.
As the Stones move forward, the logo remains a testament to their legacy and the loyalty of their audience. More than just a marketing tool, it’s a symbol of connection between artist and listener. And according to the band, that connection is what truly made them legends.
