Everton’s faith in a ‘lawless’ Premier League, according to Gary Neville, has been completely shattered following their ten-point deduction.

The former Manchester United midfielder claimed that the Premier League is a “defunct organization” where “greed and selfishness are out of control.”

Everton were docked ten points after failing to meet Premier League profit and sustainability regulations, resulting in huge financial losses of around £372 million over a three-year period.

That’s more than £250 million more than the Premier League’s criteria allow clubs to lose during a three-year rolling period.

However, with Manchester City facing 115 allegations of violating the league’s financial regulations and eight clubs opposing a move to prohibit clubs from loaning players from sister teams, Neville believes Everton’s faith in the league has been shaken by the league’s larger problems.

Gary Neville claimed that the Premier League is a ‘lawless organization’ in which Everton do not have faith.

‘Everton’s trust and faith in the Premier League has completely vanished. ‘Greed and selfishness are out of control; it’s lawless,’ he said on the Stick to Football podcast.

‘The Premier League is a defunct organization because it is comprised of 20 clubs all voting in their own self-interest. This has been a long time coming.

‘The Super League teams that attempted to ruin European football as a whole were fined a total of £22 million, £3.5 million for each team, which is an incredible disgrace and scandal for what they attempted to do, which was the attempted murder of our game.’

‘What we’re discussing here is no longer football. I enjoy football, but it is slowly eating itself from the inside out.’

Fans have lambasted the decision to dock Everton ten points, while City faces 115 penalties for allegedly breaking financial regulations.

The Toffees cooperated with the probe, however City refused to turn over certain records, causing the Premier League to initiate arbitration to force their hand.

Portsmouth received a lighter punishment for entering administration in 2010, whereas Everton overspent by £20 million while also overseeing the construction of a new stadium.

While Jamie Carragher agrees that the points deduction was excessive, he also points out that Everton had received multiple warnings that there were close over stepping.

‘I understand the points formula, but Everton are £20 million over, and how does that amount to 10 points when you consider Portsmouth, who went into administration and lost only nine points?’ he asked.

‘I’ve always thought Everton were one of the worst-run clubs in the Premier League.

‘When you look at the books, they’re just £20 million over, and when you look at the transfer fees and the money today, it doesn’t seem like much. But, on the other hand, how have Everton’s owners looked at that [the books] and continued working with the Premier League, who were warning them that you’re coming very close, so why did they then spend £10-15 million on one extra player, because that cost them £10-15 million?

‘It’s just ludicrous from the standpoint of genuine ownership. Everton’s ownership can’t be unhappy; they’ve been working with the Premier League, who have been warning them about how close they’ve been getting, and yet they still go too far.

‘Did they expect the Premier League would bottle it and not discipline them?

‘For Everton, I believe they were at the wrong position at the wrong moment. The Premier League currently has so much going on with so many other clubs that it’s almost as if “we’re making a stand, and we must stop people breaking rules and getting away with things.”
