The Premier League has revealed that Everton have been punished 10 points for violating Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. Following the announcement, the Toffees would slide to 19th in the table, with four points.

“An independent Commission has imposed an immediate deduction of 10 points on Everton FC for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs),” the league said in a statement.

“Earlier this year, the Premier League filed a complaint against the Club and referred the case to an independent Commission.” During the hearings, the Club admitted that it had violated the PSRs for the period ending in Season 2021/22, but the magnitude of the violation was disputed. Following a five-day hearing last month, the Commission ruled that Everton FC’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5 million, as claimed by the Premier League, exceeding the £105 million level allowed under the PSRs.

“The Commission concluded that a sporting sanction in the form of a 10-point deduction should be imposed.”

The Premier League’s decision to punish Everton marks a watershed moment in the league’s approach to financial misconduct. And, as Sean Dyche’s side prepares for another relegation battle, the rest of the league will be wondering about Manchester City’s case.

In February, City was referred to an independent panel for allegedly violating 115 league rules between 2009 and 2019. The league conducted a five-year investigation and provided them with various claims against the team.

Following Everton’s point deduction, the focus has shifted to Manchester City. While the inquiry is ongoing, the 10-point deduction demonstrates that the Premier League is willing to deduct points from teams.

This season, a verdict against Pep Guardiola’s team may work in Arsenal’s favor. After 12 games, Arsenal sit one point behind City, and a hypothetical points deduction may see Mikel Arteta’s men win the title. However, each case is unique, and we are still waiting for a ruling.
