Roy Keane provides a scathing assessment of Mauricio Pochettino ahead of Everton vs. Chelsea.

Roy Keane has revealed that one Chelsea player is still ineligible to play for England at Euro 2024. Raheem Sterling, Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, and Levi Colwill are the players on the outskirts of Gareth Southgate’s team heading into the tournament, with all four battling for a spot on the aircraft to Germany next summer.

Despite being Southgate’s most used player, Sterling has not been included in the last few selections due to injuries and inconsistent form. Gallagher received his first senior cap two years ago, while Palmer and Colwill made their Three Lions debuts this year.

Gallagher is competing for a starting spot in the England squad alongside Declan Rice, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jude Bellingham, and Kalvin Phillips. Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, and Jarrod Bowen are just a few of the names vying for the two wide positions that Palmer and Sterling will also be vying for, while Colwill’s versatility as a centre-back and left-back puts him in good stead to make the cut.

Much of the starting lineup is set, but one midfield slot, alongside Rice and Bellingham, appears to be up for grabs. Gary Neville mentioned Gallagher as a possible candidate for the post on Stick To Football, but Keane quickly shot that down.

“The other one (option) is Conor Gallagher, who’s obviously played, but he’s a runner.” “No,” Keane replied, “I don’t think he’s good enough.” While Gallagher is not on the same level as Rice or Bellingham, he has proven to be quite valuable to Pochettino and Chelsea in terms of midfield balance.

In the summer, the England international was linked with a move elsewhere, but Pochettino wanted him to stay. In the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell due to injury, Pochettino gave Gallagher the captain’s armband for a period of games, demonstrating his trust and belief in the 23-year-old.

Pochettino has already decided that no bids for the England international will be entertained in the January transfer window, based on his performances this season prior to his sending off against Brighton last weekend, with the Chelsea manager preferring to see him sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher struggled in his most recent England game against Malta, but he might be the one person needed to bring out the best in Bellingham in a more advanced position, especially if Phillips is unable to secure consistent minutes in the run-up to next summer.
