In light of Everton’s most recent 10-point deduction, Arsene Wenger’s previous allegations over Manchester City’s compliance with Financial Fair Play regulations have surfaced once more.

Though it has unavoidably not gone down well with those in charge at Goodison Park, the Toffees received the harsh sentence after an independent panel found that the team had broken financial regulations. The club feels that a sporting punishment in reaction to off-field difficulties is unfair and that there are several mitigating reasons that justify their spending.

“After a five-day hearing last month, the commission determined that Everton FC’s PSR [profit and sustainability rules] calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5m, as contended by the Premier League, which exceeded the threshold of £105m permitted under the PSRs,” reads a statement released by the Premier League, which goes into further detail about Everton’s offenses.

“The commission determined that a 10-point deduction should be applied as a sporting sanction. That penalty is effective right now.”

Many supporters of all the teams have questioned why Everton has received the biggest points loss in Premier League history whereas City, who are now unbeaten despite 115 claimed offenses against them, has not. This topic has been raised by many fans in the immediate wake of the deduction.

“Monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases” was an additional statement released by Everton. In actuality, the probe will take a lot longer to complete than it would have for the Toffees’ single offense because of the numerous alleged violations by City.

Long-standing doubts over City’s compliance with FFP regulations have been raised, and three years ago, legendary Arsenal player Wenger offered his opinion on the matter. “I believe that winning in sports is all about following the rules,” the Frenchman said.

He continued, saying, “I was always in favor of the teams operating under their own natural revenue streams and having control over the financial regulations. The rules have been established; I firmly believe that they should be improved upon, but for now, you must accept them as written.

“They are not respected by the public, and they must face consequences if they are discovered attempting to circumvent the law in somewhat legitimate ways. If it is established that something was done intentionally, consequences will not be tolerated.”

But Wenger did see the silver lining when he mockingly stated he didn’t feel much sorry for City because they “bought all my players” and the accusations made against them.
