Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings’ coach, who is on leave, has agreed to terms with Clemson.
Chris Rumph had been absent from work since October.
Chris Rumph, the now-former Vikings defensive line coach who has been on leave since October, has been named the Clemson Tigers defensive ends coach.
Clemson’s board of directors approved Rumph’s hiring on Monday morning. He returns to the university where he was the defensive line coach from 2006 to 2010.
“For me, this is like coming home,” Rumph said in a statement. “In terms of the town and the quality of the people, Clemson is a great fit for me and my family.” The fan base’s fervor is unparalleled… Coach (Dabo) Swinney’s Clemson program has won repeatedly and at the highest levels. I am delighted to play my role in getting the program back to where it belongs, with Clemson competing for national championships in the College Football Playoff year after year.”
Rumph, like many coaches, has moved about a lot in his career, most recently working for two years in Minnesota under head coach Kevin O’Connell. In 2021, he was the Chicago Bears’ defensive line coach, and in 2020, he made his NFL debut coaching linebackers for the Houston Texans.
“Chris really fits what I was looking for in this hire,” said Clemson coach Dabo Swinney. “I wanted someone with NFL experience — and he certainly brings that — and I was looking for the right recruiting fit as someone who grew up in this state and played in this state.
According to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, assistant D-line coach Pat Hill stood in for Rumph after he left the Vikings.
